The results of change blindness studies and other experiments strongly suggest that the visual system can focus on only one or very few objects at a time (maybe 30 or 40 objects per second), and that anything lying outside a given moment's cone of interest gets short shrift.

This is because the brain has evolved mechanisms for combating data overload, allowing large rivers of data to pass along optical and cortical corridors almost entirely unassimilated. It peels off selected data for a close, careful view, filling gaps and compiling a cohesive portrait of reality based on a flickering view.

L'Inconnue de la Seine

L'Inconnue de la Seine (French for "the unknown woman of the Seine") was an unidentified young woman whose death mask became a popular fixture on the walls of artists' homes after 1900. Her visage was the inspiration for numerous literary works.

According to an often-repeated story, the body of the young woman was pulled out of the Seine River at the Quai de Louvre in Paris around the late 1880s.^[2] The body showed no signs of violence, and suicide was suspected.

A pathologist at the Paris morgue was so taken by her beauty that he had a moulder make a plaster cast death mask of her face.

In the following years, numerous copies were produced. The copies quickly became a fashionable morbid fixture in Parisian Bohemian society

Women cannot afford to get angry

Whether you are running for president or looking for a clerical job, you cannot afford to get angry if you are a woman, Yale University psychologist Victoria Brescoll has found.

Brescoll and Eric Uhlmann at Northwestern University recently completed three separate studies to explore a phenomenon that may be all-too-familiar to women like New York Senator Hillary Clinton: People accept and even reward men who get angry but view women who lose their temper as less competent

The studies, published in the March issue of Psychological Science, provide women with recommendations for navigating emotional hazards of the workplace. Brescoll says it pays to stay emotionally neutral and, if you can't, at least explain what ticked you off in the first place.

"An angry woman loses status, no matter what her position,'' said Brescoll, who worked in Clinton's office as a Congressional Fellow in 2004 while she was preparing her doctoral thesis on gender bias.

King's College London has developed a programme simulating a journey where a person interacts with other travellers.

A third of the 200 people studied had paranoid thoughts, with those anxious and worried most likely to do so, the British Journal of Psychiatry said.

During the four-minute ride the volunteers walked around a carriage filled with "virtual" passengers who behaved like real people.

The "avatars" - computer-generated characters - breathed, looked around, and sometimes met the gaze of the participants.

A pre-assessment showed that those who were anxious, worried, pessimistic, or had low self-esteem, were most likely to feel paranoid.

One participant who experienced paranoid thoughts told the scientists: "There's something dodgy about one guy. Like he was about to do something - assault someone, plant a bomb, say something not nice to me, be aggressive."

Another said: "There was a guy spooking me out - tried to get away from him."
