Hillsborough Disaster: remembering the 96 dead

It is nineteen years since 96 Liverpool supporters lost their lives on April 15th, 1989, and, as it has done every year since then, the Hillsborough Family Support Group held a memorial service at Anfield this afternoon to remember the dead.

Liverpool's current manager, Rafael Benitez today sent a message of condolence to the friends and families of the fans who lost their lives in the tragedy.

"This is obviously an important day of the year for everybody connected with our club," said Benitez.

"We must take time to remember those who lost their lives at Hillsborough and to be with their families and friends today. We must give them our support and show that we are thinking of them.

"It's important we pay our respects and that is why we will all be at the memorial service later today."

Millennial Tendencies in Responses to Apocalyptic Threats

Abstract: Popular discussion of utopian possibilities and apocalyptic risks from new technologies is sometimes dismissed as ungrounded millennial hysteria. In this essay I reflect on the various types of historic, pancultural millennialism. I then suggest how contemporary forms of secular techno-utopian and techno-apocalyptic discourse reflect these millennialist types and their characteristic biases to over- or under-estimate catastrophic risks, and adopt fatalistic or inappropriate stances toward risk reduction. Then I suggest that awareness of these characteristic millennialist cognitive biases help us separate grounded assessments of catastrophic risks from their attendant psycho-cultural baggage. By carefully parsing our hopes and fears about the future from the characteristic dysfunctions of millennialism we can tap millennialism’s energy without being led astray by it. (Download the PDF)

In large part, a society’s image stems from its overall opinions – its political, religious, and ethical beliefs – and how much diversity it tolerates. For example, how do some areas develop images of being either liberal or conservative, and, in others, liberals and conservatives live side by side?

As a team of researchers explains, our individual opinions both influence and are influenced by our surroundings. By following a set of rules, the researchers have modeled the opinion formation process in societies where individuals’ opinions are strongly influenced by others they interact with. The scientists found that, depending on two criteria – how strongly individuals are influenced by each other and how many connections individuals have – a society’s overall state can exhibit either large segregated patches of consensus, or areas with closely intermingled opinions.

Paul Parker describes himself as a conservationist. But Mr Parker conserves by killing.

His chosen prey is the North American Grey Squirrel.

His Northumbria-based organisation, the Red Squirrel Protection Partnership, say they have culled more than 15,000 squirrels in little over a year. That works out as approximately 200 squirrels a week.

"They are carrying squirrel pox which kills the reds. They also hammer the bird population, they kill the chicks to get into nest boxes and they eat eggs.

"We are going to end up losing all our reds within 10 years if we don't take these out of the equation."

A game shop in Corbridge is our next stop.

The last two grey squirrel loins are on sale in the window. The furry creatures have become the latest game delicacy.

"We sell quite a lot on the market and to local restaurants. The shop manages to sell quite a bit."
