Artforms of Nature

The nineteen century German biologist Ernst Haeckel is famous for his fantastically illustrated book Artforms of Nature. The copyright for this book from 1904 has now expired and thanks to Wikimedia Commons it is available for everyone to appreciate.

Haekel's artistic interpretation of the biological forms he studied have a clarity of symmetry and detail that has been a source of inspiration for many artists and engineers over the years. They provide the perfect subject matter for the Fractal Explorer plugin.

The Romance of Alexander' was originally produced in Greek in about 200-300 AD from a variety of written accounts and stories from the oral tradition. It purports to record the history of Alexander the Great (d. 323 BC) but is really a fantastical amalgam of legend and fact that catapulted the already remarkable accomplishments of Alexander's thirty two years on the planet to mythological status

Attributed to an unknown author called Pseudo-Callisthenes

not really a single work but a great evolving and heterogeneous collection of texts and manuscripts, often shaped by regional scribes and translators to fit the pervading culture. Impossible deeds were often attributed to Alexander - his encounter with a tribe of headless men, for instance

an ascent into the air in a basket borne by eagles, a descent into the ocean in a diving bell, a meeting with the Amazons, an interview with the Brahmans or naked philosophers, and the search for the Water of Life

Seven Japanese aesthetic principles

Below are just seven design-related principles (there are more) that govern the aesthetics of the Japanese garden and other art forms in Japan.

Kanso (簡素) Simplicity or elimination of clutter. Things are expressed in a plain, simple, natural manner.

Fukinsei (不均整) Asymmetry or irregularity. The idea of controlling balance in a composition via irregularity and asymmetry is a central tenet of the Zen aesthetic.

Shibui/Shibumi (渋味) Beautiful by being understated, or by being precisely what it was meant to be and not elaborated upon. Direct and simple way, without being flashy. Elegant simplicity, articulate brevity.

Shizen (自然) Naturalness. Absence of pretense or artificiality, full creative intent unforced.

Yugen (幽玄) Profundity or suggestion rather than revelation.

Datsuzoku (脱俗) Freedom from habit or formula. Escape from daily routine or the ordinary. Unworldly. Transcending the conventional.

Seijaku (静寂)Tranquility or an energized calm (quite), stillness, solitude.

Melusine (or Melusina) is a figure of European legends and folklore, a feminine spirit of fresh waters in sacred springs and rivers.

She is usually depicted as a woman who is a serpent or fish from the waist down (much like a mermaid). She is also sometimes illustrated with wings, two tails or both, and sometimes referred to as a nixie.

"This new mode was not a matter of script metamorphosing into living forms which are also readable letters, but of using script to delineate such forms. Seldom had the flexibility of the Arabic alphabet been so tested.

This practice established itself only relatively late in Islamic art, when the taboos outlawing religious iconography had lost some of their power.

The ever excellent University of Wisconsin Digital Library has recently posted 'Geheime Figuren der Rosenkreuzer, aus dem 16ten und 17ten Jahrhundert' ('Secret Symbols of the Rosicrucians from the 16th and 17th Centuries') to their History of Science and Technology subsite. It was published in 1785-1788. There are multiple format page images available (click 'display gallery view').

Adam McLean tells us:

"This 18th century compendium, drew on 17th century alchemical sources such as Adrian von Mynsich, with mystical pieces from Valentin Weigel, and Abraham von Franckenberg's works on Jacob Boehme. It was an important and influential source of Rosicrucian ideas, albeit filtered through an 18th century perspective."

Urban decay photography is the technique of photographing abandoned and rundown buildings. In many cases the buildings haven’t been abandoned for more than a few years. Often illegal, photographers of abandoned buildings typically bypass “no trespassing” signs to capture these spectacular shots.

The characteristic dark and somber coloring sets the mood of these once populated structures. Now they stand as mere memories of the past, luckily to have even one lone photographer wandering their halls once again.

The Victorians staring in appear bemused, while the poor hippo looks as if he's just given up. And who could blame him. Transported from his hot home on the mudbanks of the Nile to spend the next 28 years living behind bars in Regent's Park.

The image of Obaysch will be one of more than 250 rarely seen 19th-century photographs to be exhibited at the British Library's big winter show, details of which were announced today. Incredibly, for an institution which has some 350,000 photographs spread across its various and vast archives, this will be the first major photographic exhibition to be held at the library.
