10^262 is an unwritable number

The author used Kennedy’s book for some of his “facts”. I just couldn’t help but laugh at this claim:

scientists have computed that to provide a single protein molecule by chance combination would take 10^262 years. Take thins pieces of paper and write “1” and then zeros after them – you would fill up the entire known universe with paper before you could write that number.

Too little and too MUCH sleep can affect health

Researchers from the University of Warwick and University College London found that both a lack of sleep and too much sleep can more than double the risk of death in individuals, according to a study of more than 10,308 people.

Participants who had cut their sleeping from seven hours to five hours or less a night faced a 1.7-fold increased risk in death from all causes, and twice the increased risk of death from a cardiovascular problem in particular.

But they also found that those individuals who showed an increase in sleep duration to eight hours or more a night were more than twice as likely to die as those who had not changed their habit, however, predominantly from non-cardiovascular diseases.

Some reasons cited for too much sleep included depression, low socioeconomic status and cancer-related fatigue.

Frozen smoke: a world changing discovery?

In the latest science discovery, the material called aerogel could be the latest miracle to come out of the science industry.

Aerogel, one of the world’s lightest solids, is strong enough to not succumb a direct blast of 1kg of dynamite and protect against heat from a blowtorch at more than 1,300C.

Aerogel is nicknamed “frozen smoke” and is made by extracting water from a silica gel, then replacing it with gas such as carbon dioxide. The end result is a substance that is capable of insulating against extreme temperatures and of absorbing pollutants such as crude oil, The British Times reported.

It is now being used to develop an insulated lining in space suits for the first manned mission to Mars, scheduled for 2018.

It also has green credentials. Aerogel is described by scientists as the “ultimate sponge”, with millions of tiny pores on its surface making it ideal for absorbing pollutants in water.

Woman stabs dog that attacked her cat

ERHARD, Minn. - Authorities said a woman stabbed a pit bull that got into her house and attacked her cat. The Otter Tail County sheriff's office said the woman's daughter and a friend were walking into the house on Wednesday evening when the neighborhood dog made it past them and got into the home.

The dog went into a back room and found the cat. While the pit bull was attacking the cat, authorities said the woman started stabbing the dog with a knife to get it to stop.

The dog ran out of the house. The cat later died.

Sheriff Brian Schlueter said the dog was stabbed in the hindquarters and its owner said it did not require medical attention.

The sheriff's office was investigating the incident, Schlueter said.

Rogue cell phone has 911 on redial

WATERLOO, Iowa - A rogue cell phone is not accepting calls, but it sure likes to dial 911 operators in eastern Iowa.

Operators at the Black Hawk County Consolidated Communications Center said that they received about 400 calls from the same cell phone last week and that no one seems to be on the other line.

Officials can't locate the phone but have figured out that it is an old line not currently associated with a cell phone provider. Such phones, once charged up, can still place 911 calls under Federal Communications Commission rules set in 1994.

The cell phone can't receive calls, and emergency workers haven't been able to track the owner through service records, either.

Officials are suspicious that it could be a prank — but they say it's not funny and potentially dangerous.

Until the source of the calls is found or they stop, dispatchers still have to answer every call just in case someone is on the line with an emergency.

Like all problems, much can be accomplished through education. Examples of what is needed include:

* Providers must be educated as to the needs of the transgender community.

* Insurance companies need to be educated regarding the importance of hormonal therapy, the ramifications if hormones are not a covered drug, and the need to include coverage for hormones in their drug programs.

* Prevention messages and education needs to be targeted to the transgender community in a manner that is sensitive to their needs, concerns and fears.

* Providers must provide a safe place for those identifying as transgender to disclose their gender identity.

A study in Atlanta collected data among transgender sexworkers and found 68 percent of them were HIV infected.

San Francisco. One study surveyed transgender people seeking hormones in a public health setting. Of those, 15 percent were HIV infected. In a more recent study, 35 percent were found to be HIV positive.

The world is hard on people who are overweight. For every supportive, kind person, there seems to be 12 who are more than willing to stare you down or make some snide remark about you not missing many meals. So it's only natural assume that you'd be more attractive to the opposite sex if you weighed less. eDiets recently addressed this issue. Their verdict? Thin is still in but there are more attractive qualities out there.

I couldn't agree more--I know it sounds cliche, but confidence is more attractive than thin, and having bones stick out never looks good. Voluptuous Catherine Zeta Jones beats out skeletal Angelina Jolie any day in my books.

WASHINGTON - Tiny robots programmed to act like roaches were able to blend into cockroach society, according to researchers studying the collective behavior of insects. Cockroaches tend to self-organize into leaderless groups, seeming to reach consensus on where to rest together.

Given a choice, roaches generally prefer a darker place and the robots were programmed to do the same.

75 percent of the cockroaches and 85 percent of the robots gathered under the darker one.

Then, to see if the robots had really become part of society and could influence group decisions, Halloy and colleagues programmed them to prefer shelters with more light.

The result, the lighter shelter was preferred by the mixed group 61 percent of the time, while the cockroaches alone picked it just 27 percent of the time.

On the other hand, in 39 percent of cases the robots, despite being programmed to prefer a lighter shelter, joined the cockroaches under the darker one.

Pediatrician Arrested for Child Pornography

A local pediatrician has recently been arrested for the possession of child porn.

Dr. Robert Reinhold's office and home on Wednesday October 24. Reinhold, 55, was arrested and charged with possession of child pornography.

In total, over 1,700 images of child pornography were found on sheets of 8 by 11 paper. The images included children in various stages of undress. Numerous images involved children engaging in sexual acts or lude displays.

Operation Predator is an Immigration and Customs initiative to help protect children from sexual predators. This initiative is what sparked the investigation and arrest of Dr. Robert Reinhold in Troy, Ohio. Since July 2003, when Operation Predator began, more than 10,000 individuals have been arrested. This includes those who travel overseas for sex with minors, child pornographers who use the internet, and child sex traffickers. Over 110 people have been arrested from Ohio, alone.

People do not understand that this is not a one size fits all society. The students we are turning out seem to be wonderful test takers but lack common sense and everyday knowledge but ask them about FCRAP and they will tell you.

Priorites are screwed up! As far as the letter of resignation you wrote and the good points you made, trust me they were read and shoved off! The Broward School Board along with BTUseless could careless about you and your opinions. I know that first hand. I left the system and relocated out of state where there is not such thing as FCRAP. No wonder why our students do better. I am not saying every place is perfect but the grass is sure greener outside of Florida. Why does Florida lose 3000-5000 teachers per year. This letter writer just hit the high point but also forgot aboutbeing underpaid and treated unprofessionally!
