Russian threat to Nato supply route in Afghanistan

Russia played a trump card in its strategic poker game with the West yesterday by threatening to suspend an agreement allowing Nato to take supplies and equipment to Afghanistan through Russia and Central Asia.

The agreement was struck at a Nato summit in April to provide an alternative supply route to the road between the Afghan capital and the Pakistani border, which has come under attack from militants on both sides of the frontier this year.

Zamir Kabulov, the Russian Ambassador to Afghanistan, told The Times in an interview that he believed the deal was no longer valid because Russia suspended military cooperation with Nato last week over its support for Georgia.

Mr Kabulov also suggested that the stand-off over Georgia could lead Russia to review agreements allowing Nato members to use Russian airspace and to maintain bases in the former Soviet Central Asian states of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

FBI investigates 'Obama assassination plot'

The FBI is investigating an apparent assassination plot against Barack Obama after four people were arrested near the Democratic convention in Denver in the possession of high-powered rifles.

One of the suspects told police they were "going to shoot Obama from a high vantage point using a ... rifle ... sighted at 750 yards," Denver television station CDS4 reported. Police have told the station that one of the suspects "was directly asked if they had come to Denver to kill Obama. He responded in the affirmative."

The suspects were seized on Sunday when local police arrested a man, identified by the television station as Tharin Gartrell, 28, who was driving a rented pickup truck erratically. CDS4 is reporting that in his truck police found two high powered rifles with telescopic sites, as well as camouflage clothing, walkie-talkies, a bulletproof vest, a high powered spotting scope,

Senator Edward Kennedy unleashed high emotions and a surge of adrenalin on the opening night of Barack Obama's nominating convention by delivering a powerful speech in Denver less than two months after having brain surgery for a malignant brain tumour.

The liberal lion of the Democratic party and brother of the late John F Kennedy reduced many in Denver's Pepsi Centre to tears with a powerful call to arms on behalf of Mr Obama, after a day in which there were doubts that his dire health would allow him to even take the stage. The original plan had been for him simply to watch a filmed tribute to his life and legislative achievements in the US Senate, where he has served since 1962.

“My fellow Democrats, my fellow Americans, it is so wonderful to be here. And nothing is going to keep me away from this special gathering tonight," he began, to huge cheers and thousands of waving "Kennedy" banners.
