Suit accuses Blockbuster, Facebook of privacy law violations

A class-action lawsuit is brewing over Facebook's controversial Beacon tool and Blockbuster's involvement with it. Texas native Cathryn Elaine Harris has filed a lawsuit against Blockbuster, alleging that the company is actively and knowingly violating the Video Privacy Protection Act by reporting users' activities back to Facebook. The suit seeks to be certified as a class action, and asks that Blockbuster pay out $2,500 per incident in which it disclosed personally identifiable information.

The complaint, seen by Ars, points out that users' off-Facebook activities on Blockbuster are being reported back to Facebook, regardless of whether users choose to publish the information for their friends to see. Women 4 times more likely than men to cough up personal info: survey

According to Infosecurity Europe, 10% of men -- but 45% of women -- were willing to give personally identifiable information to a complete stranger when approached outside Liverpool Street Station in London.

But, wait, it gets worse: The fake researchers asking for the information were offering chocolate bars as an incentive to participate.

The press release is dated April 16, so I'm thinking it's unlikely to be an April Fools joke. There was some good news, however:

An online banner advertisement that ran on MySpace.com and other sites over the past week used a Windows security flaw to infect more than a million users with spyware when people merely browsed the sites with unpatched versions of Windows, according to data collected by iDefense, a Verisign company.

Michael La Pilla, an iDefense "malcode" analyst, said he first spotted the attack Sunday while browsing MySpace on a Linux-based machine. When he browsed a page headed with an ad for DeckOutYourDeck.com, his browser asked him whether he wanted to open a file called exp.wmf. Microsoft released a patch in January to fix a serious security flaw in the way Windows renders WMF (Windows Metafile) images, and online criminal groups have been using the flaw to install adware, keystroke loggers and all manner of invasive software for the past seven months.

Hitachi unveiled the world's largest consumer hard drive with a gigantic capacity of one Terabyte (1 TB), enough to hold 222 DVDs with room to spare. The 1 TB Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 is 33% larger then the previous line of hard drives, which had a capacity of "only" 750 GB.

The development of hard drive technology has been no less than amazing. The IBM 305 RAMAC was the first hard drive introduced by IBM in the mid 1950s and used to process accounting information. Although it occupied almost half a room, cost around $50,000, and had only 5 Mb of storage, it is still considered a highly innovative device for its time. The Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 has 200,000 times the capacity of the IBM 305 RAMAC at a fraction of the size and will cost only $399 when launched on Q1 2007 (compared to the $50,000 price tag of the IBM 305 when it was launched).

I recently attended an international water conference during which the keynote speaker revealed a shocking statistic:

He equated this to a 747 jetliner full of kids going down every hour.
