Discovered in 1943 by Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann, D-lysergic acid diethylamide (or LSD) was first used by researchers as a powerful tool to help unlock the mysteries of the human mind. It was considered an effective tool to treat alcoholism and drug addiction; it was also used to better understand the nature of schizophrenia and other mental illnesses. (Much of that pioneering research was done by a team of researchers based in Saskatchewan.) While researchers were determining the medical benefits of LSD, others — like Aldous Huxley and Timothy Leary— promoted the drug as a powerful tool for self-understanding.”

Powaqqatsi: Life in Transformation is the 1988 sequel to the experimental 1982 documentary film Koyaanisqatsi, by Godfrey Reggio. It is the second film in the Qatsi trilogy.

Powaqqatsi is a Hopi word meaning “parasitic way of life” or “life in transition”. While Koyaanisqatsi focused on modern life in industrial countries, Powaqqatsi, which similarly has no dialogue, focuses more on the conflict in third world countries between traditional ways of life and the new ways of life introduced with industrialization.

In a highly structured and bureaucratic state, the government has installed extreme and highly counterproductive measures for which to track down terrorists. A “bug” in the system mixes up the last name of a terrorist (Tuttle) and an innocent man (ironically enough Buttle). Thus, the wrong man (Buttle) is arrested and killed while Tuttle continues to roam free. Sam Lowry, an average man with a mother who “knows people”, is assigned to investigate the error. At the same time, Jill layton, Buttle’s neighbor, is trying to report the mistake to authorities. Due to the extremely inefficient bureaucracy, she finds the process to be very tedious. Meanwhile, Sam Lowry, who has been dreaming about Jill, gets sidetracked by his fantasies and ends up also being a victim of the counter productivity of the government.

The Prisoner (1967)

After an unnamed British secret agent retires from his position, he returns to his home in London to pack for a holiday. However, he is soon gassed and loses consciousness. When he awakes hours later, he finds himself in a strange community by the sea known only as the Village. In this place, no names are used and all phones, maps, taxis and other services are “only local.” Number Six, as he soon becomes known as, is shown around the Village by its chairman Number Two, who explains that the information in his head is priceless and that he and his superiors want to know why he resigned.

Hemp For Victory

Hemp for Victory is a black-and-white film produced in 1942 by the USDA outlining a plan to distribute 400,000 lbs. of cannabis seeds to American farmers with the goal of producing 350,000 acres of cannabis by 1943 — all for the war effort. The USDA even went as far as to urge 4-H clubs to grow at least half an acre, but preferably 2 acres of cannabis. All American farmers were required to see the film, sign a paper saying that they had viewed the film, and read a booklet on the matter. Farmers who agreed were waived from serving in the military, and all their family members were also exempt. They received farm equipment at a discounted price, and sometimes for free.

However, before and after the war — the same plant was considered “demon weed” and the killer of the same kids that were pressed into service to grow it during the war.
