BAGHDAD - Women are being killed by militia groups in southern Iraq for not conforming to strict Islamic ways, the police say. And increased threats from militia groups are driving many women away from their homes.

Basra police chief Gen. Jalil Hannoon has told reporters and Arab TV channels that at least 40 women have been killed during the past five months in the southern city.

...later I read from the news victims were spared by the king but this is a great example how sick "justice" system that country has.

Saudi Arabia defends sentence for rape victim

Saudi Arabia has condemned Western interference in the case of a rape victim who was sentenced to 200 lashes and six months in prison.

The case sparked an international outcry after a Saudi court sentenced the girl to 90 lashes and a prison-term because she was in a car with a man who was not a close relative.

When her husband then publicly criticised the judicial system, an appeals court judge increased the sentence to 200 lashes.

Her offence was in meeting a former boyfriend, whom she had asked to return pictures he had of her because she was about to marry another man.

The couple was sitting in a car when a group of seven Sunni men kidnapped them and raped them both, lawyers in the case told Arab News. The former boyfriend was also sentenced to 90 lashes for being with her in private.

Under Saudi Arabia's strict interpretation of Islamic Sharia law, women are not allowed in public in the company of men other than their male relatives.

One in 7,000 babies is born without an ear. Most patients are given a false one made from plastic or silicone. But the NHS now offers reconstructive surgery, using cartilage from the patient's ribs. Here, model Sasha Gardner, 25, from Bournemouth, talks to Rachel Murphy about her experience, while her surgeon explains the procedure.

He'd then remove six inches of cartilage from my ribs, which would be formed into an ear shape and attached to my head.

Cartilage is flexible and connects the ribs to the breastbone, so that your ribcage can expand when you breathe.

Study finds racial bias in sentencing

African-Americans in Cook County were imprisoned for drug offenses at 58 times the rate of white people -- the seventh-worst racial disparity among large counties nationwide, according to a new report.

The Justice Policy Institute

found that nationwide, African-Americans are imprisoned for drugs at 10 times the rate of white people.

there is little relationship between a county's drug imprisonment rate and the rate of illegal drug use in the county.

Instead, high rates of imprisonment typically indicate counties with larger proportions of African-Americans, higher unemployment and poverty rates, and larger judicial system budgets.

The end result is that though there are nearly 20 million illicit drug users in the U.S., the drug laws are selectively enforced primarily on minorities and the poor
