Incredibly, they found that in the region sampled, while consistently fewer people chose to drive their cars on Friday the 13th, the number of hospital admissions due to vehicular accidents was significantly higher than on "normal" Fridays. Their conclusion:

The sixth day of the week and the number 13 both have foreboding reputations said to date from ancient times, and their inevitable conjunction from one to three times a year (there happen to be three such occurrences in 2009, two of them right in a row) portends more misfortune than some credulous minds can bear. According to some sources it's the most widespread superstition in the United States today. Some people refuse to go to work on Friday the 13th; some won't eat in restaurants; many wouldn't think of setting a wedding on the date.

This simple fact would shock most consumers if they knew about it. People assume that beef found to be contaminated with E. coli must be thrown out or destroyed (or even recalled), but in reality, it's often just pressed into hamburger patties, cooked, and sold to consumers. This practice is openly endorsed by the USDA.

But E. coli may not be the worst thing in your burger: USDA regulations also allow chicken feces to be used as feed for cows, meaning your hamburger beef may be made of second-hand chicken poop, recycled through the stomachs of cows.

Now, you might wonder how chicken feces could pose a mad cow infection risk to cows. And if you're not already grossed out by what you've read so far, you will be when you read the answer to this question: It's because chickens are fed ground up parts of other animals such as cows, sheep and other animals. Some of that chicken feed spills out and gets swept up as chicken litter, then fed to cows.

Should teens in love be prosecuted if they have underage sex?

Other cases involving underage sex - for example, when one party is an adult - may have a clear-cut answer, but teen cases are hard to prosecute, said Attorney-General Walter Woon.

Titled Changing Social Mores: Protecting Children From Themselves?, it focused on how the law here dealt with the issue of underage sex.

The penalty for having sex with a girl under 16 is up to five years' jail and a fine of up to $10,000.

He said: 'It is not easy and this is where the non-governmental organisations, the community services play a part. The judges cannot do very much by themselves. Sending them to jail per se will not make them reflect on their lives. That is the last thing that is going to happen. But good or ill, this is the framework that we have.'

Social workers agreed largely with his comments, including his point that reporting underage sex is a delicate issue.

The trawler, the Diasan Shinsho-maru, capsized off Chiba`as its three-man crew was trying to haul in a net containing dozens of huge Nomura's jellyfish.

Each of the jellyfish can weigh up to 200 kg and waters around Japan have been inundated with the creatures this year. Experts believe weather and water conditions in the breeding grounds, off the coast of China, have been ideal for the jellyfish in recent months.

One of the largest jellyfish in the world, the species can grow up to 2 meters in diameter. The last time Japan was invaded on a similar scale, in the summer of 2005, the jellyfish damaged nets, rendered fish inedible with their toxic stings and even caused injuries to fishermen.

Experts believe that one contributing factor to the jellyfish becoming more frequent visitors to Japanese waters may be a decline in the number of predators, which include sea turtles and certain species of fish.

Mystery pain with no cure

The illness is a long-term disease causing severe pain in muscles and fibres. It is not classed as a form of arthritis, is not infectious, can affect anyone but is more common in women. The cause is still a mystery and there seems to be no cure. Patients complain they ache all over and have other symptoms such as fatigue, morning stiffness, sleep disturbance, tingling or numbness of the skin, irritable bowel and bladder, short-term memory problems (fibrofog), anxiety, depression and headaches.

This confusing cluster of symptoms makes it easy to misdiagnose. X-rays or blood tests are not much help in detecting it. Sometimes patients are told it's "all in their head".

Severe stress is a suspected cause. Those with fibromyalgia have out-of-synch neurotransmitters – the chemicals that create and control brain signals.

Treatment differs and the secret lies in being actively involved and having a clear understanding of this complex illness.

LOS ANGELES -- A California man who tried an at-home attempt at lengthening his penis almost lost it instead.

According to a CNN report, the Costa Mesa man used a dumbbell gym weight and got stuck for three days.

The fire department was called to the emergency room and the only way to get the weight off the man's penis was to saw it off. It took about two hours, but crews were able to keep the man's organ intact.

A sex therapist in the area says the bizarre incident shows how all the products and advertisements that promise to make a penis grow can trigger someone to act extreme.

A man on the run, wanted for fraud by US authorities, inadvertently revealed where he was hiding through a series of extravagant Facebook updates.

US officials say Mr Sopo and an associate falsely obtained more than $200,000 in credit from banks.

In recent status updates Mr Sopo said he was "loving it", described himself as "living in paradise" and said he was "just here to have fun".

"He was making posts about how beautiful life is and how he was having a good time with his buddies," said Assistant US Attorney Michael Scoville.

The 26-year-old, who is currently in custody in Mexico City, initially sold roses in Seattle nightclubs after arriving in the US in 2003. He then allegedly moved on to bank fraud.

He was able to discover exactly where Mr Sopo was living and the information was passed to the Mexican authorities who arrested him last month.

India has rejected a demand by the Albanian government for the return of the remains of Nobel laureate Mother Teresa, buried in the city of Calcutta.

"Mother Teresa was an Indian citizen and she is resting in her own country, her own land," Foreign Ministry spokesman Vishnu Prakash said.

The ethnic Albanian nun, who was known as the "Saint of the Gutters" for her work among the poor of Calcutta, was given Indian citizenship in 1951.

After her death in September 1997, Mother Teresa was buried at the Calcutta headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity (MoC), which is now a pilgrimage site.

She took the name of Teresa on taking her vows as a nun in 1931 and in 1950 established the order which runs homes for abandoned children, the elderly and those suffering from leprosy and Aids.

She was beatified - the first stage in becoming a saint - in 2002 by Pope John Paul II. It was done in record time in the modern era.

Titanic-survivor dies

The ashes of the last Titanic survivor are to be scattered at the spot where the liner set sail almost a century ago.

At two months old, Millvina Dean was the youngest passenger on board the doomed ship. She died aged 97 at a nursing home last May.

A harbourmaster’s boat will be used to carry her ashes on their final journey to an area close to berth 44 in the Eastern Docks at Southampton.

A memorial service for Miss Dean, pictured, will be held on the same day – Saturday, October 24 –at St Mary’s Church, Copythorne, in the New Forest.

Miss Dean was on Titanic’s ill-fated maiden voyage with her parents and brother. The family were emigrating to Wichita, Kansas, where her father had family and hoped to open a tobacco shop.

Millvina, her mother, and brother were among the first third-class passengers to escape the sinking liner. Her father, however, did not survive. The trio were picked up by ship and taken to New York, where they spent three weeks in hospital.
