It’s Saturday morning. Wee hours, past 2 AM PST. I’m feeling mellow and relaxed. I just started using my Clipmarks account actively. Just let me say, I’m amazed time-after-time with how easily I got into it: not only does it have rounded corners in all the right places (and certainly not gratuitously), it just about always works as I expect it to.

Me, I just feel great that it’s so social. Like I’ve said about Second Life, “I’m not alone.” Maybe I’m stretching it in 2006, but I believe Clipmarks can be a useful educational tool: when I was a kid, I grew up reading the bite-sized, punchy writing in The National Enquirer. Every now and then, they’d run an article detailing how Enquirer was useful to an ESL teacher, helping communicate English to students while informing them of topics of relevance. In a similar vein, Clipmarks, with its magnificent potpourri of “100% User Powered” content, could really get students going in classrooms, having them aware of what’s happening in a very wet and memorable way.

Even more than that, in today’s world, we need information management skills. There’s no shortage to dataglut! I haven’t stepped inside a school in years, and correct me if I’m wrong, but I get the impression these skills aren’t being taught enough. By far. It goes beyond basic computer usage and adding bookmarks, to being able to make sense and retrieve the info, and share it with your fellow human beings for extended discourse, learning, and fun — creating feedback loops and reactions, and increased knowledge for all involved. This is what I’m seeing in Clipmarks as a form of participatory media (hey, what would Howard Rheingold think?). And I’ve added it to my existing pantheon of how I manage daily info.

8 Essential Strategies to Saying "No"

By saying “no”, although you might feel that others will feel offended or hurt (and it’s possible), you are also sending a strong message that you value your time, that you have priorities, and that you also respect the person to whom you’re saying no, as you don’t want to commit to something and then do a lousy job or not do it at all.

8. Never say you’re sorry. Again, you have to respect your time. If you apologize, you are sending the message that you are doing something wrong by saying no, that somehow you don’t have a strong right to say no. It’s very tempting to apologize, I know. We often say things like, “I’m sorry, but …” or “I wish I could, I’m so sorry” just because we’re uncomfortable giving an outright no. But again, you are sending the wrong message. See Strategy 5 for a better approach.

clipper's remarks: Caught this over @ Guy Kawasaki's blog. The title is punchy and gets right to the point; I'm clipping this at the encouragement of my girlfriend, and also because it goes hand-in-hand with the positive "be a nicer person" clips I've been seeing around.

I haven't read this book, but Guy's blog entry about it sure is valuable. Read and laugh... at your own peril!

Book Review: The No Asshole Rule by Robert Sutton

You have to like an author who has the testicles (or ovaries) to walk away from Harvard Business School Press because it wouldn’t let him use the word “asshole” in his title. (HBS Press also turned me down once, but I digress...) Robert Sutton is the author who did this; he’s a professor at Stanford in the engineering school. While I am not a big fan of profanity, “asshole” is the only word that delivers the proper connotative meaning in some situations, so forgive me for using it in this posting.

I have an early copy of Sutton’s book, The No Asshole Rule: Building a Civilized Workplace and Surviving One That Isn’t, and it’s the definitive guide to understanding, counteracting, and not becoming an asshole. I am qualified to make this judgment because (a) I’ve been an asshole a few times and (b) been a victim of assholes more than a few times.

clipper's remarks: Always cool to see predictions that've come true. Some 6+ years later after this was published, we know now what's happened. And the answer, looking at the specific instance of Second Life, is yes.

P.S. Not the first time either, as pioneering, earlier online worlds like Habitat have demonstrated. Odd how this article is heavy on the words but misses out the key concept of an "avatar" as digital persona.

Cities remain centers

Information technology may eventually cause a decline in the need for urban concentration. However, the case is much less clear than the futurists would have us believe. As telecommunications improve, the demand for interactions of all varieties should rise, and the role of cities as centers of interactions should also increase. After all, the most famous modern agglomeration of industry, Silicon Valley, has occurred in the industry with the most direct access to the latest and best information technology. This agglomeration probably occurs because that industry relies so heavily on interactions and requires so much knowledge to be transferred across firms and individuals.
