Nations move to filter, censor access to internet

The unbridled freedom that once characterized the Internet is 
gradually being reined in by states -- democratic and authoritarian 
alike--as cyberspace is increasingly viewed as a strategic, 
geopolitical frontier, according to the Canadian co-author of a new 
international report.
Waning are the days of the World Wide Web as a free-for-all of

"Particularly since 2001, there's been a growing recognition of the

way in which the Internet has facilitated all sorts of unintended

consequences that these states find threatening, in particular the

mobilization of opposition movements, militants, extremists networks,

human rights information that exposes what non-democratic states do,"

Prof. Deibert said.

What began in 2002

has now been expanded into the world's freedom-of-

information watchdog, keeping tabs on some 26 jurisdictions from

Australia to Zimbabwe.

psiphon is a censorship circumvention solution that allows users to access blocked sites in countries where the Internet is censored. psiphon turns a regular home computer into a personal, encrypted server capable of retrieving and displaying web pages anywhere

psiphon operates through networks of trust. There are psiphon providers who install and administer a psiphon server (psiphonode) in an uncensored country, and psiphon users (psiphonites) who login and access the server from a country that censors the Internet.

psiphon encryption provides strong protection against electronic eavesdropping. However, there is a known attack that attempts to trick users into accepting a forged certificate (see 'Man-in-the-middle attack' below). If psiphonites follow instructions provided, regarding certificate fingerprint validation, this attack can be averted.

psiphon is free.

Well, since you were able to clip the painting and display it here at CM, I doubt "censorship" is the appropriate word.
I love the appeals to emotion. They point out the reluctance of the "oppressed" to accept the actual definitions of words, while at the same time they seek to shut down anyone with an opposing FREAKIN' OPINION !

Art Censorship Controversy Brings Awareness, Change

I am grateful that the controversy and outrage resulting from the censorship of my painting of a breast cancer survivor brought about positive change. At our meeting last night, the other artists at the Continental Gin Building decided by unanimous vote that our collective would not be in the practice of censoring art amongst our fellow members in the future. Good sense and peace prevailed.

It was a painful experience, but I am glad I spoke up. The irony is… after the story was blogged across the internet, picked up by several local papers, and then featured on our local television news, thousands have viewed my painting. The message of hope and courage behind the portrait of a breast cancer survivor went far beyond the outreach it would have had if it had not been removed from the group show.

Most of all, I am very humbled by all of the stories of struggle, survival and loss that have been shared by those whose lives have been touched by this disease.

My portrait of a breast cancer survivor was banned and removed from the spring show at the artist collective where my wife and I rent a studio. I was told there was a vote amongst several artists and the painting was deemed “not family friendly”. Of the many other nudes in the show, only my work was censored.

As you can see, this is not erotica. This is a literal figure study of an older woman who has had a mastectomy. I was holding that woman’s hand the day she was told she had cancer.

Why was this piece considered morally offensive? Because the model is not traditionally beautiful? Because reality is too harsh? Or are there implied subtexts to this piece simply because I am an obvious dyke?

U.S. Army Clamping down on milbloggers

Major Ray Ceralde, the man behind the Army's ultra-tight, possibly blog-killing new security rules, is worried about pizza. Specifically, he's concerned that an upswing in pie "deliveries to a headquarters [could] be an indicator that a major operation is underway" -- and therefore be useful to an enemy. That's what happened in 1991, on the eve of the Gulf War, Maj. Ceralde told the official Army News Service.

But all pizza-related OPSEC considerations aside, clampdowns on military speech, and even on civilian speech, are relatively par for the course for American war efforts at least as far back as WWII. (Wartime restrictions on civilian speech go at least back to the Civil War.) Seen in the light of the military's previous attempts strict control of information coming from the front lines of various conflicts, milblogging's relatively brief heyday has been exceptional.

BENTONVILLE -- A Bentonville man asked the city to pay his two sons $20,000 and to fire the library director for including what he called "pornography" in the Bentonville Public Library collection.

"The Whole Lesbian Sex Book" by Felice Newman was removed from the library shelf after Earl Adams of Bentonville complained it is "patently offensive and lacks any artistic, literary or scientific value," according to a letter he wrote and faxed Feb. 16 to Mayor Bob McCaslin.

Library Director Cindy Suter initially relocated the book to a less accessible location as Adams requested in his first e-mail complaint. Then Adams asked Feb. 16 for the book to be removed and sent McCaslin a letter threatening a lawsuit.

"God was speaking to my heart that day and helped me find the words that proved successful in removing this book from the shelf," Adams stated Thursday.

Imus? Free speech is our constitutional right. Do I like what he said? No. Do I approve of such degrading terms being spoken? No. Would I ever listen to that asshole spew his hate? No. Do I think he should be silenced? No. Do I uphold the right of consumers and sponsors to choose not to support him? Yes. Whatever. In the end, I choose to accept that I have this wide range of feelings on the topic. That for me there is no "right" or "wrong" except as I personally perceive the different questions within the context of the event. There is no one bandwagon for me to jump on and claim alliance with.

We get up in arms and babble for days about Imus and a guy going off the deep end at VT when thousands are dieing and starving and homeless; being mutilated and tortured and repressed and subjugated; raped, murdered, sold, bought... every fucking day all around our so called Global fucking Village???

Students punished over V-word

NEW YORK: Three US students are in hot water for disobeying teachers and uttering the word "vagina" during a reading from the well-known feminist play The Vagina Monologues at a high school forum.

The three 16-year-old girls received a one-day suspension from John Jay High School, in New York, after refusing to agree to drop the word from their presentation.

The school, however, announced this week that it was postponing the suspension following outrage by some of the girl's peers, as well as parents.

"This (episode) is utterly bizarre and strange and I can't believe it's 2007 and this is a controversy," Ensler said.

School principal Rich Leprine said the punishment meted out to the students was not for using the word vagina but rather for insubordination.

"We want to put the word (vagina) out there and make people comfortable with using it.

"If they can just admit that the word vagina shouldn't have been censored because it's notlewd or obscene ...

Turkish court bans YouTube access

YouTube attracts a monthly audience of 70 million people

Access to the popular video-sharing website YouTube has been suspended in Turkey following a court order.

The ban was imposed after prosecutors told the court that clips insulting former Turkish leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk had appeared on the site.

According to Turkish media, there has been a "virtual war" between Greek and Turkish users of the site, with both sides posting insulting videos.

The clip prompting the ban reportedly dubbed Ataturk and Turks homosexuals.

Insulting Ataturk, the founding father of modern Turkey, or "Turkishness" is an offence which can result in a prison sentence.

The offending videos sparked a storm of complaints to YouTube and the clips were removed, but the court order goes further, blocking all access to the site.
