We're going to be holding another blogswarm during the Fourth of July week, July 1-4.

A blogswarm is where a group of bloggers from all venues agree to post on the same topic. Our loosely framed topic for this swarm is "the separation of Church and State is patriotic." But this is about blogging, and we're not trying to herd anyone. Post on church/state separation, against theocracy, and you're participating.

Now that Christianism has invaded and pervades the reproductive health policies and financing, we now have abstinence-only contraception taught by faith-based agencies as the sole means of contraception related reproductive health.

The costs of contraceptives just rose exponentially at college health centers, thereby pricing many students out of the market.

Bill Scaggs, a retired government and public-relations executive of ARMCO Steel, told me why he thinks that homosexuality is the greatest threat to America. "AIDS kills," was his circa 1984 answer, "and the most common way to pass that on of course is from homosexual contact." His voice cracking with indignation, Scaggs added that he refuses to use the word gay. "It's homosexual, or worse," he says. "Gay is in our Kentucky song! They took it away and trampled on it. We want it back."

I've been giving this whole Gay marriage topic alot of thought for a long time. Back when I was happily married to a man who I loved with all my heart, I supported the rights of gays to marry. He died in 1998 and now that I am living with my other soul mate, who is a woman, like me. These days I'm giving it even more thought and in different ways.

Nobody should be legally "married"

That's right; nobody. Marriage is a religious ceremony/institution/ritual/law. As soon as it became a part of state and federal legislation, the wall between the separation of church and state was crossed. Period. Marriage as a legal, binding, contract should never have been. I say, forget promoting gay marriage. Let's cut straight to the heart of the matter and abolish legal marriage.

If we are to truly separate church and state, then nobody should be married under law. Let all those straight folks go down to the courthouse and file their "domestic partnership" or "civil union" papers just like everybody else.

I’ve been goin’ a little crazy with this whole idea ever since I first came across it. Not that these kinds of issues aren’t in my fucking face and life every day... they are. As a woman, a lesbian, a witch - as an American, that’s right, I said it - an American, I’m constantly blown away by how much and how completely the intent if not the letter of our Constitution has been undermined by religion. And worse, how we seem to be going backward under the current administration of the Georgie Puppet, ventriloquism dummy for the Radical Right Christian Fundimaentalists, (and big money and oil and special interests in general. But that’s a-whole-nother rant!!).

I’ve had several ideas

for topics and I’m going to elaborate on a couple of them in the next two days, but for today I’m just going to post some quotes from a couple of our Founding Fathers on the topic of separation of Church and State, (snagged from AltLiberal’s Comments at Clipmarks), and take it from there.

The establishment clause of the First Amendment of the Constitution of the U.S. has increasingly come under attack.

I may be a "believer" whatever the hell that means, but I can't have too many smart, funny, and fascinating, atheists, scientists, agnostics, GLBT bloggers, etc. etc. around here. I'd like invite you all to Blog Against Theocracy. This is a little blog swarm being put together by everybody's favorite panties blogger Blue Gal for Easter weekend, April 6th through the 8th. The idea is simple. Just post something related to, and in support of, the separation of church and state each of those three days. Something big, something small, artistic, musical, textual or otherwise. The topic is your choosing. Whether your thing is stem cell research, intelligent design/Creationism, abortion rights, etc., it's all good. Separation of church and state impacts so many issues and is essential.

if you need a little information to tickle your muse then you'll want to check over at First Freedom First for a ton of excellent resources.

Also, I can personally recommend this interview on CFI's Point of Inquiry podcast with Susan Jacoby, author of Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism. The Center For Inquiry is just one of many supporters of the FFF project.
