Who among us is not at a loss for words? Tears pour out. Tears of joy. Tears of relief. A stunning, whopping landslide of hope in a time of deep despair.

In a nation that was founded on genocide and then built on the backs of slaves, it was an unexpected moment, shocking in its simplicity: Barack Obama, a good man, a black man, said he would bring change to Washington, and the majority of the country liked that idea. The racists were present throughout the campaign and in the voting booth. But they are no longer the majority, and we will see their flame of hate fizzle out in our lifetime.

There was another important "first" last night. Never before in our history has an avowed anti-war candidate been elected president during a time of war.

O'Reilly: NBC News "jazzed" over "[d]ead Afghan kids killed in an American air strike"

During the "Talking Points Memo" segment of the June 19 edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor, responding to the coverage by network newscasts of the deaths of seven Afghan children in a recent air strike in eastern Afghanistan, host Bill O'Reilly said "last night, all three network newscasts reported seven Afghan children were killed in fighting between the Taliban and U.S. forces. ABC News spent 15 seconds on the story, just told you about it. CBS News, 10 seconds. But NBC News gave it a full two minutes." O'Reilly continued: "Dead Afghan kids killed in an American air strike, NBC News is jazzed. But why? You make the call." He later asserted that "we don't censor the news on The Factor; we tell you the truth about Iraq and everywhere else. But we don't help the terrorists either, and that separates us from some in the anti-war press."

I had no idea my friends and I are such a severe threat to national security. I believed all along that all we were guilty of was loving someone of the same gender. Gay Rights Advocates & Environmentalists Are Called Terrorist Threats

The Alabama Department of Homeland Security classified gay rights groups and environmentalists as potential terrorist threats:

The Alabama Department of Homeland Security has taken down a webpage that listed environmental, anti-war, and gay rights groups as possible terrorists, according to a report from the Associated Press.

"The director of the department, Jim Walker, said his agency received a number of calls and e-mails from people who said they felt the site unfairly targeted certain people just because of their beliefs," the AP reported. "He said he plans to put the Web site back on the Internet, but will no longer identify specific types of groups."

The site described the various groups as "single-issue terrorists" who include "people who feel they are trying to create a better world." [Raw Story]

I recently received an e-mail from a group called “Supportthetroopsendthewar.com.” It included a video of former Sen. John Edwards. He calls on Americans to use Memorial Day weekend as a time to “bring an end to this war.” Shockingly, the video is titled “A Memorial Day Message from John Edwards,” with the smoking gun note, “Paid for by John Edwards for President.” Moreover, the e-mail recommends that Americans bring signs with the message “Support the troops, End the War” to local Memorial Day parades. Revolting is a kind word for it.

We Americans need to remember why Memorial Day is special. It’s not about picnics or trips to the beach. It’s not about making pro- or anti-war statements. It’s not about supporting political candidates. It’s about honor, duty and the ultimate sacrifice. It’s about people who have decided that the United States is worth dying for.

Those who got us in this mess, because they never were Christians, never followed Jesus, never believed in Christ. Their God was mammon. They never believed in Jesus, because they disregarded every word he ever said. But they told everybody they were Christians and we're the first to condemn anybody who wasn't. As they searched out the sins of others they could not see their crime. Avoidance is so much more fun, all that self righteous vain glory stuff. Them days are coming to an end folks.

8. Control the press

The Committee to Protect Journalists says arrests of US journalists are at an all-time high: Josh Wolf (no relation), a blogger in San Francisco, has been put in jail for a year for refusing to turn over video of an anti-war demonstration; Homeland Security brought a criminal complaint against reporter Greg Palast, claiming he threatened "critical infrastructure" when he and a TV producer were filming victims of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana. Palast had written a bestseller critical of the Bush administration.

You won't have a shutdown of news in modern America - it is not possible. But you can have, as Frank Rich and Sidney Blumenthal have pointed out, a steady stream of lies polluting the news well. What you already have is a White House directing a stream of false information that is so relentless that it is increasingly hard to sort out truth from untruth.

The equally secret Counterintelligence Field Activity (Cifa) agency of the Department of Defense has been gathering information about domestic organisations engaged in peaceful political activities: Cifa is supposed to track "potential terrorist threats" as it watches ordinary US citizen activists.

anti-war activists were refused entrance into a House Armed Services committee hearing in which General Petraeus, commander of U.S. operation in Iraq, was scheduled to appear.

The CODEPINK ladies,

and others including

Cindy Sheehan and Marine mom Tina Richards, went to the hearing expecting it to an open and transparent. Instead, they were told there was not enough room availble for the public to attend.

Since all power is "derived from the People", American democracy should be a transparent process. The most disgusting thing about this incident is that shows how our elected officials are attmpting to lock "the People" out of the legislative process.

As lawmakers in Texas and other states consider legislation targeting women's autonomy over their reproductive lives, it is instructive to examine the tactics employed by the Christian right to ensure success in its war on women's rights.

It is a cherished myth of the religious right that providers of abortion care "hide the truth" from women, their supposition being that a woman who sees an ultrasound image will change her mind about having an abortion. The truth is that we encourage a patient to let us review those images with her before an abortion procedure. That is the best way to reassure her that they bear no resemblance to the shock graphic images so beloved of anti-abortion activists, and most women feel comforted to know that.

But none of that matters to groups such as Focus on the Family. What matters to people like them is imposing their politico-religious fantasies

by force of law.

The rest of today's anti-anti-war screed is going to be about the folks that are out there demonstrating.

It is a popular myth that the "majority" of the "anti-war" crowd is composed of reasonable Americans who believe that the Iraq War was a mistake, and that these folks are the ones out there demonstrating against the war.

Let me dismantle this in detail.

Call these jackasses what they are: Pro-Defeat. Anti-Victory. Pro-Jihadist. Anti-Western. Enemies of Freedom.

Or simply, The Enemy.

Apparently, I Don't Support the Troops

Nevermind that I'm giving up at least three years of my life to worry, heartache and solitude. Nevermind that I spend more time researching how our troops are being cared for than I do on tasks that actually earn me money. Nevermind that my children are growing up without their father because he and I believe in our sacrifice for the good of the nation. Never mind my efforts to inform the public at large about how to provide items that the troops need to get their job done.

I don't support this war.

And apparently, if you don't support the mission (ie, the war), you don't support the troops.

So why is it that those of us who do not support the choices of this administration are labelled anti-troop? I have said this before, and I will repeat it again and again until I don't have to do so anymore:

It is not only our right to question the President, it is also our responsibility in a democratic society.

Turkish court bans YouTube access

YouTube attracts a monthly audience of 70 million people

Access to the popular video-sharing website YouTube has been suspended in Turkey following a court order.

The ban was imposed after prosecutors told the court that clips insulting former Turkish leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk had appeared on the site.

According to Turkish media, there has been a "virtual war" between Greek and Turkish users of the site, with both sides posting insulting videos.

The clip prompting the ban reportedly dubbed Ataturk and Turks homosexuals.

Insulting Ataturk, the founding father of modern Turkey, or "Turkishness" is an offence which can result in a prison sentence.

The offending videos sparked a storm of complaints to YouTube and the clips were removed, but the court order goes further, blocking all access to the site.
