California high court upholds gay marriage ban

Justice Carlos Moreno wrote the dissenting opinion disagreeing that the proposition did not change the constitution's equal protection clause. He said the law denying same-sex couples the right to wed "strikes at the core of the promise of equality that underlies our California Constitution." He said it represents a "drastic and far-reaching change."

"Promising equal treatment to some is fundamentally different from promising equal treatment for all," said Moreno, who had been mentioned as a possible contender for the U.S. Supreme Court. "Promising treatment that is almost equal is fundamentally different from ensuring truly equal treatment."

The California Supreme Court upheld a voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage Tuesday, but it also decided that the estimated 18,000 gay couples who tied the knot before the law took effect will stay wed.

The 6-1 decision written by Chief Justice Ron George rejected an argument by gay rights activists that the ban revised the California Constitution's equal protection clause to such a dramatic degree that it first needed the Legislature's approval.

A small group of Proposition 8 supporters also had gathered outside the court to hear the ruling.

"A lot of people just assume we're religious nuts. We're not. But we are Christians and we believe in the Bible,"

The state Supreme Court had ruled last May that it was unconstitutional to deny gay couples the right to wed. Many same-sex couples had rushed to get married before the November vote on Proposition 8, fearing it could be passed.

Same-sex marriage is legal in Iowa, Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Is The Word Fuck Becoming More Acceptable?

clipper's remarks: Do we give too much power to that word? I can remember the first time I heard it and I thought it was real bad. Really, really bad. Like going to hell bad.
Through the years I've used that word a lot to express frustration. Maybe too much, because it kept me from expressing my frustration in a more intelligent and meaningful way. But it felt so good to say it. It released stress in the short term, but until someone came into my life that I really respected I didn't realize how offensive that word could be to others.
I still reserve the right to use it to make a point that I feel cannot be made without it. Like the website FML does.

I think it is more acceptable. I’ve heard professors use it while talking to PhD students in a seminar, it’s often every other word in comedy and action movies, and even my mom says it now—although she always smirks after she uses it like she’s gotten away with something.

I recall hearing about an interview with the singer/songwriters on Linkin Park about their first album. It’s notably fuck-free, and it got some attention for it.

Mike Shinoda would then ask Chester to consider what feelings/concepts he was trying to express and together they drew out words with more meaning.

The point of their work wasn’t to eliminate the profanity… but to convey meaning.

Some 40,000 people in the US state of Utah live in illegal polygamous families in which a man takes more than one wife. These fundamentalist Mormons have now begun a campaign for a change in the law they regard as discriminatory and unfair.

Under US law it is a felony, and technically the adults could be jailed and the children taken into care. But there are simply too many.

Given that sexual infidelity so often leads to bitterness, even violence, how did the wives cope with that natural emotion of human jealousy?

Dalton's poems celebrate the tenacity of Salvadorans and their diaspora across the Americas.

"Señora, you've earned a spot in heaven," he told owner Aura Quezada. "Because in this place where everyone opens liquor stores, you have opened a bookstore."

They've tossed the old, bottom-line ways of thinking about this neighborhood out the window.

The restaurant draws connoisseurs with its excellent tamales. The bookstore's customers, for the most part, are hungry too -- for knowledge.

Jane Elliott has blue eyes.

Elliott, an Iowa teacher, made deliberate use of that in 1968 when she created a now-famous exercise for her classroom of white third-graders. It was the day after the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., and she was struggling to explain the concept of racism.

She hit upon an idea: For an entire day, she conducted her class as if the brown-eyed children were superior to those with blue eyes.

Elliott was the first white person I ever heard who admitted to the privileges of whites, acknowledging that visible differences affect how the world perceives us. Her words sparked a hunger in me for more.

Brown-eyed children "became domineering and arrogant and judgmental and cool," she says.

And I watched bright, blue-eyed kids become stupid and frightened and frustrated and angry and resentful and distrustful.
