Judge: Wikileaks gets its domain name back

SAN FRANCISCO--Wikileaks is getting its domain name back.

After spending more than three hours hearing arguments from a raft of attorneys--two representing the Swiss bank that fought to get the site's plug pulled and about 10 who have been trying to get the site back online--a federal judge here has ruled in favor of Wikileaks.

Wikileaks, which uses Wikileaks.org as its primary domain, is a whistle-blowing site that focuses on posting leaked documents.

They threw down a series of legal land mines against BJB, including that Wikileaks can't be sued in a U.S. court by a foreign company because it consists of foreigners; that Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act prevents any action against Dynadot; that the First Amendment prohibits an overly broad attack against a Web site just to delete a subset of pages; that Dynadot cannot refuse to transfer the domain name to another registrar; and so on.

Ever since I saw this in that Mac OS X Hints article, I’ve used it as my default equalizer in iTunes — it seems to give a nice pop to MP3 tracks in particular.

BIOSHOCK IS ONE of the most awaited games in recent memory

I would recommend that you avoid this game like the plague.

The problems stem from SecuROM, a DRM infection of unconscionable proportions, brought to you by the good people of Sony, again. 2KGames took the anti-user step of hurting paying customers with this malware in order to prevent piracy, but if you don't want to end up with a system filled with unremovable malformed registry keys and an uninstallable coaster, your only recourse is to pirate it.

What SecuROM does is phone home and activate, the same way MS malware in WGA and Vista does. If you install the game twice, it will keep you from installing a third time.

On the up side, the early calls of 'rootkit' are false

DRM infections chalk up another defeat snatched from the jaws of victory, and we pay the price. 2K had another winner, but with SecuROM screwing users, take a pass, a wide pass, on Bioshock.

US customs bust coke-smuggling 'submarine'

Stealth vessel packed with $352m of Colombian naughty salt

US Customs are feeling pretty pleased with themselves after busting a stealthy "semi-submerged smuggling vessel" packed with $352m of Bolivian marching powder.

The unlikely craft was spotted on Sunday in the Eastern Pacific by a Florida-based US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) P-3 Orion aircraft, which guided a US Navy ship to intercept. The four smugglers aboard duly scuttled the vessel and were subsequently taken into custody along with 11 bales of charlie weighing in at 1,210lbs. CBP estimated the value of the contraband at $352m.

With my supercomputer-as-art background from Thinking Machines, I'm perhaps pre-disposed to appreciate nicely done computers and computer installations. I was blown away when I saw the photos below of MareNostrum, currently the 9th largest supercomputer in the world and the largest in Europe, which is installed in a former chapel at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC). Wow.

MareNostrum's Myrinet interconnect fabric requires four cabinets. Myricom did a nice job of reducing the cable count as much as they could by using quad-link ribbon cables between their switch elements.

Contrast this with Sun's Constellation System approach, which uses one large, ultra-dense InfiniBand switch (therefore no inter-switch cabling) and node connections that are bundled three per-cable and connected directly to Constellation's ultra-dense blade chassis.

This takes complexity management to the next level and makes petascale computing systems an achievable goal.

New Facebook Advertising Model

I was expecting this after stories this last week

But this little dirty trick I was not expecting.

The advertising is here and it ain’t pretty.

No it is not on the sidebar, no it is not flashing scripts and no it is not a pop-up. It is cleverly disguised in your News Feed!

this stinks and falls into the same category as Google’s deceptive “Sponsored Links” in searches.

The advertising that appears on Facebook looks no different to any other News Feed item other than it has a very discrete “sponsored” tag after the ad. The word is a different colour and blends in very well to white.

This is yet another bullshit attempt into tricking users to click links to generate click-through’s!

Unfortunately though Facebook will get their money because of the disguised ads in this context. There are enough Facebook users out there that won’t know any better. But I do and I am not clicking on any of them.

Over the last few months I have really changed how and where I create content

The problem here is that this has created dozens of online identities for me, a single individual. People who want to follow me need to pick their poison - this blog, Twitter, etc.

I finally have honed in on what I think is a viable solution. Enter Tumblr. This simple, free service allows anyone to create a tumblelog - which is basically a bare bones blog. Gina Trapani recently explained how to set one up.

Tumblr is unique in that it can ingest any RSS feeds that you throw at it and aggregate all by date

RSS is the common denominator that unites most communities, the end result is an online Lifestream - a place for all of your stuff.

I have set up a tumblelog at my personal domain at www.steverubel.com.

Aggregated Lifestreams could be the next big thing on the web, particularly as community expands.
