Tamara de Lempicka

Tamara de Lempicka was a Polish Art Deco painter. Inspired by Picasso, de Lempica’s style would be referred to as “soft cubism”. Her images are mostly about desire and seduction and intend to effect the viewer in the same way. The subjects- refined and fashionable temptresses.

Post Modern Romanticism

Romanticism is a complex artistic, literary, and intellectual movement- a reaction against the scientific rationalization of nature, and was embodied most strongly in the visual arts, music, and literature. Most of the images of the movement evoke a sence of awe from nature. Funnily enough, pinup art has a distinct link to these aesthetics and emotions. Only instead of exhibiting an introspective awe, through the allegory of nature, they seem to elevate the woman, depicted in the painting, to the status of goddess, using awesome imagery of nature.

Olivia de Berardinis Vs. Hajime Sorayama

Olivia de Berardinis, as I mention above, was one of the Playboy magazine artists to changed the face of pinups, making them more realistic. But Olivia would also add the fetish and fantasy factor into the pinup painting, and change it’s direction forever.

While their work is very simmilar, Sorayama tends to take up a more mechanical, hard-edged, technological fantasy, while de Berardinis is more into fabric ruffles and hair flow. Sometimes the technology in Sorayama’s work takes over and leaves only female-like mechanical organs, while in Olivia’s work, there’s always a very human, feminine presence. It could be just me, but I feel Sorayama has more to say than just tits&ass (no disrespect to the rest of the pinup artists, who strictly create fantasy).

#7 The Diversity

In the midst of the banal, neo-pinups bring in a natural beauty. All shapes, all sizes, all creeds all cultures and all sexes. I’m a skinny caucasian girl and sometimes get blamed for fitting into the fashionable mold. From my point of view, there’s just to much beauty out there to spend our time looking for what’s wrong with people. Because of this, I love drawing “ordinary women.” These women are from all walks of life, in all stages of life, and every time I draw one I find all that’s beautiful about her, in the process of my work.

Nir Hod - Post Modern Pinups in Israel

Hod blasted on to the Israli art scene, some may say, fully formed. His obsession with himself and sexual ambiguity was there from the start. This may have been the mid 90's, but the Israeli art scene was still shocked at androgynous images. Another taboo Hod bashed at, from the start, was the Israeli soldier. The effeminate soldier beefcake and the sexualized female cadet was something the military Israeli establishment couldn't deal with (no matter how many gays enlisted, or how low- us women- would get our uniform pants altered). The bigger blow came to the "offended" people, who had served in the army, that realized Hod had never enlisted and yet depicted himself in uniform... In women's uniform, no less!

Personally, I think Hod portrays the Israeli military bombshell perfectly

Jules Chéret - The Father of the Modern Poster

One look at Jules Chéret’s illustrations and you can conjure up the lightness of Elvgren’s old Coka Cola ads. Wikipedia tells that:

pundits began calling him the "father of the women's liberation." Females had previously been depicted in art as prostitutes or puritans, and the Cheréts — as his women were popularly called — were neither. It was freeing for the women of Paris, and lead to a noticeably more open atmosphere in Paris where women were able to engage in formerly taboo activities, such as wearing low-cut bodices and smoking in public.

There weren’t many women painting pinups, in the 30’s and 40’s. Hell! There weren’t many women in the work-force, in the 30’s and 40’s. So these girls are pioneers in many aspects. Did they change the pinup landscape? I definitely believe so. A more personal touch, a more respectful treatment of the individual and a more active pinup.

Kiyosaki knows how to teach. The story is forgettable and the characters are walking stereotypes, but that's the point. You will find yourself within one of these women. You wouldn't remember the plot, but you'll remember the point. The whole story is built to encourage you to start investing and take control of your financial affairs. It's the best pep talk I ever had. After I finished reading, I got on line and went to the Rich Woman web site. From there I went to all the Rich Woman links (some are better than others) and started educating myself about investing.

When you need money advise, who do you turn to?
I go to my dad, my spouse or my brother. I've never asked my uncle, but I'm sure if I did, he'd be able to help. Who wouldn't you turn to? Chances are, you're unlikely to ask your mom, your sister or your wife (if you are a man).

The older I get, the more I understand, the lack of female role-models, in my life, when it comes to money. It's great that you can learn about money from dad, but it's very disturbing, to me- as woman- the general apathy, of all the women in my life, towards money issues.

One of the most disturbing phenomenas, resulting of this economical shift of power is the "Women's Business" trend. Respectable Sites like WallStreet.com and Entrepreneur.com decided to branch out to the "female niche" with sister sites like WomensWallStreet.com and WomenEntreprenouer. Although I do subscribe to these sites, a burning question comes to mind:

Why do women need a special site do explain business to them? Is men's economics different from women's economics? Isn't both our money green?

Affirmative action or well-niched target markets?
The internet is full of services for minority owned businesses. General sites like Minority Owned Website Directory and Minority Internet Services. Or specific sites such as BlackReferer.com (for African Americans) and Empower Women Now (for Asian American Women). If there are so many sites out there for minorities, obviously that means that there is a huge market out there, demanding them. I know that as a consumer, I’d like the products I buy to be tailored for me as precisely as possible. So if I’m a twenty-four year-old white woman, looking to learn about internet marketing, what could I possibly have in common with Rich Schefren or Rich Jerk?

I find this a ridiculous age-old question. Artists have been drawing their female muses since the Renaissance (before that they weren't really all that adoring), but it's not my opinion I'm after.

The Eobabes (http://ecobabes.org/) are a group of environmentally aware women, who decided on printing a pinup calender, in order to "to make climate protection visible, talked about, and attractive." I read an article about them at http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/11/26/MNG8HMK6G81.DTL and apparently the question of women degradation reared it's ugly head.

So what do you think? Is the Eobabe's campaign degrading to women or Empowering? How about neither?
