Post Modern Romanticism

Romanticism is a complex artistic, literary, and intellectual movement- a reaction against the scientific rationalization of nature, and was embodied most strongly in the visual arts, music, and literature. Most of the images of the movement evoke a sence of awe from nature. Funnily enough, pinup art has a distinct link to these aesthetics and emotions. Only instead of exhibiting an introspective awe, through the allegory of nature, they seem to elevate the woman, depicted in the painting, to the status of goddess, using awesome imagery of nature.

Cryingbear - BBW Vector Cheesecake

Cryingbear is a vector artist that primarily creates BBW pinups. The work is simple and beautiful and is very reminiscent of classic cheesecake. I’m partial to McDonna (on the left). It’s a very self-aware piece that says something about the world we live in.

Bad Girls

The 40’s and 50’s were chock full of after-school-specials, deterring teenagers from sex drugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll. (Little good that did’em come the 60’s, but that’s for the next sections.) Surprisingly enough, a realistic example of a girl that’s generally “good” didn’t come to these movie creator’s mind, but they had to create an angel that would fall from grace and turn into a complete slut. (pardon the French, of course )

Allen Jones

Moving into the BDSM realm (for all us modern pinup lovers ), Allen Jones introduced, what is known today as Fornophilia, into Pop Art. Jones was already doing, in the 60’s, what has only become more main-streamish, this past decade. Jones’ sculptures deal with women and how we are perceived in society through fashion and design. It’s a completely different pinup world.

Those Cool Cats

The 50’s, like any time in history, weren’t as carefree as you may imagine. Most people worked hard, African Americans were struggling and really, the only ones exuding that familiar Happy Days/Grease carefree glamor were the teenagers of white suburbia. They were fashionable and fun-loving and like many post-modern generations after them, they were to be icons who reflect their times (missing some historical facts in the process )

Hilda - Very Humble Beginnings

I’ve mentioned Hilda before and I just adore Duane Bryers’ work, as an artist. Hilda is just attractively drawn in that sweet yet all-woman style of cheesecake. She gets into terribly embarrassing situations and makes the most adorable facial expressions as a reaction.

Duane Bryers’ was so in love with Hilda, he drew her in a way we couldn’t but fall in love with her, ourselves. Hilda is an active, fun-loving gal of many talents; usually depicted in nature, fishing, swimming, biking or sharpening axes.(?!) All this is done with a smile a wink and a very pure enjoyment of life and environment.

There weren’t many women painting pinups, in the 30’s and 40’s. Hell! There weren’t many women in the work-force, in the 30’s and 40’s. So these girls are pioneers in many aspects. Did they change the pinup landscape? I definitely believe so. A more personal touch, a more respectful treatment of the individual and a more active pinup.

Good Artists and Bad Girls

When comics artists draw women they unleash some incredible fantasies. These fantasies have read the minds of millions of boys and girls across the world (and no, that’s hardly something to worry about ;) ).

Sexual art is usually underground or very niched. Because of this, artists throw all inhibition away and correct the politically incorrect. There are no holly cows in the pinup business, just beautiful pinup girls (and boys) of all shapes, sizes and sexes.

Sexual art (A.K.A. “pornography”) has never been subjected to the cultural snob's censorship. What's the point? Smut is smut, right?

Wrong! As the definition for pornography changes through time and place, so does its audience. The internet is a great place to understand these trends.

The Pinup Halo
Art used to be contemplated in terms of meaning and having a “Halo” (Walter Benjamin, “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction"). Then digital print came and screwed it all up. At this age of digital art, “the original copy” is meaningless, because it doesn't exist per say, and any print copy you wi

ll make isn't perceived as “the original”.

Historically, when looking at the pinup, we find it (in it's fully formed glory) at around World War II. It is considered pop-culture smut, only worthy of wiping a Marine's... well, you know where I'm going with this ;) But by Benjamin's own terms, these paintings were full fledged art, drawn with oils on canvas and distributed to the masses by print. There are rare originals being collected for hundreds of dollars. In our capitalistic world, money talks, and paying a few hundred dollars for an oil painting, just because it is the original, made by the hand of the artist himself, constitutes a “Halo”, in my book.
