What does DVDscr, TELESYNC, CAM, R5 etc. mean?

Have you ever downloaded a movie from torrent sites and wondered what those weird code from its filename means? Take for example, this file that I downloaded saw:

Lions.for.Lambs.R5.LiNE.XViD-HLS.avi

Lions.for.Lambs is the title of the movie
R5.Line is the release type
XVid is the compression used
HLS is the group that released the video

BBC Micro ignites memories of revolution

More than 26 years after Cambridge company Acorn and the BBC united to produce a computer to help educate the UK about the IT revolution some of the principal creators of the machine have gathered to remember its legacy.

The casings may be slightly worn and the manuals a little dog-eared but a handful of BBC Micros were fired up at the Science Museum on Thursday as part of a Computer Conservation Society event to mark the legacy of the BBC Micro, know fondly as the Beeb.

Four of the architects of the Beeb - Hermann Hauser, Steve Furber and Sophie Wilson who worked at Acorn and former BBC executive producer John Radcliffe - explain in their own words how the BBC Micro came to be created and the impact it had.

Sci-fi writer Clarke laid to rest

British science-fiction writer Sir Arthur C Clarke has been buried in his adopted country of Sri Lanka.

Music from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey was played at the funeral and members of the family which had adopted him cried as his coffin was lowered.

"Here lies Arthur C Clarke. He never grew up and did not stop growing," his gravestone in Colombo is to read, in accordance with the author's wishes.

Sir Arthur died from heart failure and breathing problems at the age of 90.

One of the primary programmers for the Mark I was a woman, Grace Hopper. Hopper found the first computer "bug": a dead moth that had gotten into the Mark I and whose wings were blocking the reading of the holes in the paper tape. The word "bug" had been used to describe a defect since at least 1889 but Hopper is credited with coining the word "debugging" to describe the work to eliminate program faults.

Influenza viruses coat themselves in fatty material that hardens and protects them in colder temperatures, a finding that could explain why winter is the flu season, US researchers report.

We might be able to fight the flu virus by designing drugs that weaken its outer fatty coating, according to researchers who say this layer is critical to the way it infects cells

This butter-like coating melts in the respiratory tract, allowing the virus to infect cells, the team at the National Institutes of Health found.

"The protective covering melts when it enters the respiratory tract," says Dr Joshua Zimmerberg of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), who led the study.

"It's only in this liquid phase that the virus is capable of entering a cell to infect it."

Researchers have long pondered why flu and other respiratory viruses spread more in winter.

"The study results open new avenues of research for thwarting winter flu outbreaks," he says.

'Hungry Planet: What the World Eats'

All Things Considered, November 9, 2005 · Imagine inviting yourself to dinner with 30 different families... in 24 countries. Imagine shopping, farming, cooking and eating with those families... taking note of every vegetable peeled, every beverage poured, every package opened.

Well that's what photographer Peter Menzel and writer Faith D'Aluisio did for their new book, Hungry Planet: What the World Eats.

The husband-and-wife team wanted to see how globalization, migration and rising affluence are affecting the diets of communities around the globe.

Each chapter of their book features a portrait of a family, photographed alongside a week's worth of groceries. There's also a detailed list of all the food and the total cost.

Pagans lash out at Church over exorcism blame

The Catholic Church has been blasted by Pagans who reject that the increase in exorcisms is due to people "dabbling" in paganism.

"There has been a recruitment of pagan practices, and it's sheer poison," the priest says.

The Catholic Church has vowed to "fight the devil head-on" by training hundreds of priests as exorcists. Bishop Brian Finnigan, acting head of the Catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane, said it was important for the Church to carry out exorcisms.

However, the priest's claim has provoked an angry reponse from the Pagan Awareness Network (PAN), an association representing wiccans, pagans, and other followers of nature-based faiths.

"A pagan ritual is no more dangerous than going to a church, a temple, or a mosque," PAN president David Garland said.

"The Catholic Church is once again trying to create a moral panic about devil-worship and the occult. This kind of fear-mongering belongs in the Middle Ages, not in the 21st century.

I can say that fashion world is full of amazing surprises. It has a unique way of making people turn there heads and you'll never know what will pop out of a box.

Take a look at the following dresses. These dresses were made entirely out of twisted balloons and we can't deny that they are an absolute wonder to look at. They were crafted with the same techniques clowns use to make balloon animals, yet these pieces are a lot more elaborate. Researchers have developed a technique that harvests energy from rain showers and converts it into electricity.

The technology could work in industrial air conditioning systems, where water condenses and drops like rain.

It could also be used with solar power to scavenge as much energy from the environment as possible, or to power tiny, wireless sensors designed to monitor environmental conditions.

The method relies on a plastic called PVDF (polyvinylidene difluoride)

PVDF has the unusual property of piezoelectricity; it can produce a charge when it's mechanically deformed

As the drops hit the material, they create vibrations, which creates a charge.
