Imagine being watched by two undercover cops as you engage in an illicit deal in a deserted parking lot. The buyer hesitantly hands you some cash. You flash a look over your shoulder, just to make sure the coast is clear, then you hand over the contraband. Neither of you says a word. You just nod, acknowledging the deal is done, then you head back to your car and buckle up for the drive home.

But before you can even put the car into drive, a screeching formation of police cars, surrounds you, sirens wailing. Armed officers leap from their vehicles, guns drawn and sunglasses glaring. "Come out with your hands up!" they shout.

You slowly open the driver's door of your car and inch out of your seat with both hands raised in surrender, cowering behind the open door. "What did I do, officer? What's my crime?"

Their answer comes back loud and intimidating: "SELLING RAW MILK!"

The Namahage: Japanese New Year's devils scare the laziness out of children

The head of the household will try to appease the devils with a specially prepared meal accompanied with sake. He assures them that no one has been lazy in his household. Then the Namahage, seeing all from their mountaintop, look into their secret book which records the doings of every household and challenge that statement. The head of the household again promises that all have been obedient and hard-working and pleads with the devils not to take his wife and children into the mountains. It takes considerable effort to control these devils with their strong work-ethic.

As the negotiations drag on, the head of the household offers more sake… while begging that his wife and child not be taken away. Eventually the Namahage relent placated by the offerings and the sincerity of the head of the household. They bless the next year's harvest and wish good health to all the members of the household. As the Namahage leave, they promise (or rather threaten) to return next year.

Imagine you were a young child living in the Northwestern part of Japan on the small peninsula of Oga. It's the holiday season and instead of waiting eagerly for fat jolly old elf with a sack full of toys to bring you presents, you're dreading the arrival of a bunch of hairy scary devils with a handful of butcher knives who threaten to peel off your skin if you've have been lazy all year. It makes the lump of coal Santa Claus leaves with naughty children pale in comparison. If you can get your head around that, perhaps you can understand this bizarre bit of psychological child abuse known as the Namahage.

The Namahage are Japanese devils who visit villages on the Oga peninsula every New Year's Eve. They wear straw coats, carry large kitchen knives, and wooden buckets. They come in the night down from their mountain homes howling and waving torches. The Namahage burst into homes stomping about looking for lazy children.

You might say that even if we’re not a menace to other vehicles, we’re a menace to pedestrians. But again the figures don’t stand that up. Cyclists make up about 1 per cent of the traffic in London, and they also cause 1 per cent of the traffic injuries to pedestrians – almost exactly in proportion with their numbers. The injuries they cause are also, as you’d expect, disproportionately at the lower end of the scale.

The fact is that only a minority of cyclists indulge in the arrogant behaviour towards pedestrians which gets us a bad name. I would have no problem with a motion that says some cyclists are a menace. But tarring us all with the brush of a minority would be like supporting a motion that says Muslims are a menace. It would be outrageous.”

Ken Livingstone and I made a tiny bit of history last night. We spoke at the same event – on the same side.

Ken and I have a worse relationship than Gordon Brown and the Taliban.

So to get me and Ken on the same platform shows the size of the emergency we pro-cycling forces face this evening.

The fact is, we cyclists are on the back foot tonight. You hate us. We jump red lights. We wear terrible clothes. Despite all that, we have that ineffable air of smugness – you too could ’save the Earth for our children’ if only you were more like us.

Now all that might be annoying – but but I’m not sure any of it really amounts to being a ‘menace,’ a source of danger.

The number of people killed per year by cyclists averages less than one. The number of cyclists killed per year by motor vehicles is around 120.

We are not a menace. We are menaced. And that explains some of the cyclist behaviour that gets up people’s noses…

The incident has heated the annual Krampus debate, with each camp growing increasingly shrill. One side holds that the "Krampus runs," as the random assaults are called, are good clean fun, the sort of local color that makes Salzburg charming and quaint, that Krampuses can be avoided by keeping off the streets between four and eight p.m., and that, in fact, most women enjoy being knocked around a bit by these burly beasts. The other side decries these assaults as blatantly sexist, misogynist exercises that have no place in modern society. "It is the only place in Europe where it is acceptable to beat women in public," a Salzburg women told me.

The Krampus is to Salzburg what the bull is to Pamplona, an oversized beast that sends an adrenaline rush of terror through the cobblestone streets of the old town, all in the name of cultural heritage. For a full week during the start of the holiday season, scores of Krampuses stalk the cobbled ways of Salzburg and its surrounding villages.

they stalk young women, fondling them, throwing them over their shoulders and whipping them with wooden switches until their shins and thighs are black and blue. They prowl the streets, wander onto public buses, and storm downtown restaurants where, after assaulting female patrons, they are treated to free schnapps to fuel their further fury. The anonymity provided by the Krampus mask combined with increasing amounts of alcohol consumption is not only feeding the violence but also a debate about this bizarre pagan holdover from a less civilized era.

Pro-Rape Republicans "embarassed" by Franken's anti-rape bill

-Franken proposes a bill amendment that says mercenary companies fighting our wars for us can't force their female employees into rigged arbitration (rather than civil court) when they get gang-raped by their co-workers.

-The pro-rape Republicans vote against it. Okay, I'll give them that they were voting for their corporate masters, but their corporate masters are interested in sweeping employee-on-employee gangrape under the rug.

-The pro-rape Republicans think Franken is rude and inappropriate for forcing them to show their true colors to the public.

Why not stand up and defend your votes, Repiublicans? Ten of your party sided with Franken against letting corporations sweep rapes and assaults under the rug.

I think a lot of people who dismiss Franken as a clown are going to come to understand that's he's actually a very smart, well-read policy wonk who is also funny.

Dec. 1 (Bloomberg) -- “I just wrote my first reference for a gun permit,” said a friend, who told me of swearing to the good character of a Goldman Sachs Group Inc. banker who applied to the local police for a permit to buy a pistol. The banker had told this friend of mine that senior Goldman people have loaded up on firearms and are now equipped to defend themselves if there is a populist uprising against the bank.

Has it really come to this? Imagine what emotions must be billowing through the halls of Goldman Sachs to provoke the firm into an apology. Talk that Goldman bankers might have armed themselves in self-defense would sound ludicrous, were it not so apt a metaphor for the way that the most successful people on Wall Street have become a target for public rage.

George Washington's Hemp Crop

Fiber hemp farmers don't separate the male from female plants. Marijuana farmers remove the male plants (which display their sex first) before they fertilize the females so that the females then produce lots of THC.

Fertilized female plants produce very little THC, putting their energy into making seeds instead. Male plants produce almost no THC.

George Washington was a hemp farmer, he praised the plant in many of his writings and encouraged the widespread production of it. According to current United States drug laws, George Washington was a threat to society and deserved imprisonment.

One of the more interesting tidbits from his 1765 diary: "Began to separate the Male from the Female hemp at Muddy hole--rather too late."³ This suggests that he was growing hemp not only for fiber, but for medicinal or recreational purposes. It could be argued that the separation was to enhance the fiber, but the phrase "rather too late" suggests that the female plants had already been fertilized and that he was not pleased. Recreational marijuana is grown sinsemilla to maximize the tetrahydrocannabinol content of the female plants.

Whether or not George Washington was a stoner will be left for the reader to decide, he was definitely a hemp proponent. Too bad his influence didn't last.

Harvard study: Computers don't save hospitals money

Himmelstein said that only a handful of hospitals and clinics realized even modest savings and increased efficiency -- and those hospitals custom-built their systems after computer system architects conducted months of earch.

He pointed to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Latter Day Saints Hospital in Salt Lake City and Regenstrief Institute in Indianapolis as facilities with some success in deploying efficient e-health systems. That's because they were intuitive and aimed at clinicians, not administrators.

Programmers of the successful systems told Himmelstein that they didn't write manuals or offer training. "If you need a manual, then the system doesn't work. If you need training, the system doesn't work," he said.

A Harvard Medical School study that looked at some of the nation's "most wired" hospital facilities found that computerization of those facilities hasn't saved them any money or improved administrative efficiency.

The recently released study evaluated data on 4,000 hospitals in the U.S over a four-year period and found that the immense cost of installing and running hospital IT systems is greater than any expected cost savings. And much of the software being written for use in clinics is aimed at administrators, not doctors, nurses and lab workers.

While many health care experts believe that computerization will improve quality of care, reduce costs and increase administrative efficiency, the Harvard Medical School report notes that no earlier studies closely examined computerization's cost or its effect on a diverse sample of hospitals. Even hospitals on the "most wired" list "performed no better than others on quality, costs, or administrative costs," the study found.
