Colorful Classy Text

This tutorial will teach you how to create a very classy, and colorful text effect that can be applied to signatures, banners, and headers. The steps to create this effect are very easy, but the end result looks real good.

Create a new document of any size, or open an existing document. This effect looks better on a lighter background, so l'll be using #FFFFFF.

Place text on the document using a nice thick scripted font, here l'm using a font called Frankenstein which can be downloaded here for free. This font is also accompanied with the download pack for this tutorial.

Double click this layer, and apply the following blending options:
Drop Shadow:

Inner Shadow:

Bevel And Emboss

Contour:

Gradient Overlay:

Stroke:

Result:

Hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard and click this layer, to make a selection of everything in this layer:

Go to Select->Modify->Expand with a setting of 5 pixels:

Press CTRL + SHIFT + N On your keyboard to create a new layer.

Drag this layer below our text layer as l've done here:

Fill the selection with #BEFFFD, using the flood fill paint bucket tool.

Set your foreground color to #BEFFFD, get out the flood fill bucket tool () and fill this selection:

Double click this layer, and apply the following blending options:
Drop Shadow:

Inner Shadow:

Inner Shadow:

Text Light Rays

Better Light Rays
Make better looking light rays on your text using a unique combination of Photoshop Filters.

STEP 1

Start a new image and add your text, assuming white text on black background. In this case, we want a square image so the filters work better. We will crop it down later. Center the text and make sure you have a decent margine around it for the rays to go.

STEP 2

Duplicate the text layer and color it black. Hide this layer temporarily.

STEP 3

With the lower, white text layer selected, apply a Polar Coordinate conversion. Go to Filter>Distort>Polar Coordinates... Accept that the layer will be rasterized. Set it to convert from Polar to Rectangular.

STEP 4

Since we want rays of light, we can achieve this effect with Wind. But because Wind only goes side to side, we need to rotate our canvas. Go to Image>Rotate Canvas>90 CW.

STEP 4

Apply Filter>Stylize>Wind..., Method Wind, Direction From the Right. Apply Wind 3 times. Apply a Motion Blur angle 0, Distance of 100. Rotate the canvas back 90 CCW like in step 3.

STEP 5

Apply Filter>Distort>Polar Coordinates... and convert from Rectangular to Polar. Turn the top, black text layer on.

STEP 6

Add a levels adjustment layer (Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Levels...) and adjust the blue channel to add some color.

And there you have it, the final version is easily cropped out. You may want to try blurring the layer a little, though I like the sharp rays in this case.

In this tutorial I will be teaching you how to make some industrial grunge buttons.

1.

First create a new document for your buttons. I used a document size of 400x300 pixels and set the background color to #5c5947.

Create a new layer.

Now change your foreground color to #4a4839, then with the Rounded Rectangle Tool:

Create a rounded rectangle similar to this:

Right-click the button layer and go into the Blending Options.

Click and apply the following layer styles: Drop Shadow
Inner Shadow
Inner Glow
Gradient Overlay
Pattern Overlay (Download Pattern Here.)

You should be left with a cool result like this:

Create a new layer then select the main button layer (CTRL+Click layer thumbnail.)

Now contract the selection by about 3 pixels. ( Select > Modify > Contract.

Now fill the selection with black (#000000)

After you've filled the selection with black, move the selection up about 10 pixels (Shift+Up Arrow)

Now feather the selection about 4 pixels. (Select > Feather,) now press delete.

Change the layer mode for this layer to Soft Light and lower the opacity to about 60%.

Last thing you need to do with these buttons is add the text in. For the text I used the following layer styles:

Drop Shadow
Inner Shadow
Outer Glow
Gradient Overlay

Now you can duplicate this button and add different text in.

To give everything a nice touch, after I made 2 more buttons I added in a bit of grunge, and applied Filter > Render > Lighting Effects to the whole image.

Colorbursts

Open a new Photoshop file with a transparent background. Select a foreground color you want to use by clicking the Color Picker. Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool () and create stripes the span the full height of the image. The easiest way is to zoom in once or twice by hitting Alt++ (Mac: Option++), draw the rectangles, and fill them by hitting Alt+Backspace (Option+Delete). Do worry about spacing your lines perfectly unless you want your colorburst to be perfectly uniform. You can also make your stripes different widths as I did.

Deselect any selection you still have by hitting Ctrl+D (Command+D). Go Filter>Distort>Polor Coordinates. Select Rectangular to Polar. That's pretty much it. If you feel like adding some advanced extra frills, you can take a look at what I did in the following step.

To add a little variety, I changed the color of three of my stripes in step one to a lighter shade of blue. Next, I applied layer effects to the image (see Lighting Effects Tutorial). Then, I right-clicked on the layer in the Layers Palette, chose Blending Options, and added these Drop Shadow and Satin effects. Lastly, I used the Gradient Tool to add a faint white to gray diamond gradient in the background.

Designing a CD Sticker

Start by creating a circle frame using custom shape tool.

Select the inner circle using direct selection tool. Scale down to the inner hole of the CD.

Create a thin circle frame using custom shape tool and place it as an outer most circular ring.

Create a thin circle frame using custom shape tool and place it as an inner most circular ring.

Insert an image.

Move the image layer below the outer and inner rings.

Press Ctrl+Alt+G to make clipping mask.

Change the layer mode to hard light.

Similarly add more images to fill the empty area.

Create a circle using elliptical shape tool.

Using type tool click on the circular path and type the CD info. on this path.

Add more details on the lower half of the CD sticker.

Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply layer style with the settings shown.
