For many, the mild, slightly nutty flavor of Gruyère is the perfect addition to a steaming bowl of French onion soup or a ham sandwich, but for the medieval peasants who first created it, the flavor was secondary to matters of survival and location.

Gruyère resulted from the historic collision of food scarcity and a mountainous geography, yielding a distinct and rigorous cheese-making process.

In fact, all cheese types—there are now more than 1,400--initially arose due to the unique constraints forced by geography and the human effort to preserve the valuable commodity that is milk, says food scientist Paul Kindstedt, of the University of Vermont.

“Whether you’re talking about milk from a cow, goat, sheep, water buffalo, camel, yak or any other mammal thats milk is used for cheese-making, all milk contains five basic components,” Kindstedt said.

Those components are water, lactose (or “milk sugar”), fat, protein and minerals.

Jungle fowl were domesticated in India by 3200 B.C.E. Record from China and Egypt show that fowl were domesticated and laying eggs for human consumption around 1400 B.C.E., and there is archaeoligical evidence for egg consumption dating back to the Neolithic age. The Romans found egg-laying hens in England, Gaul, and among the Germans. The first domesticated fowl reached North America with the second voyage of Columbus in 1493."
---Encyclopedia of Food and Culture, Solomon H. When and why did humans begin consuming eggs?
Humans have been consuming eggs since the dawn of human time. The history is complicated and
diverse; the culinary applications are innumerable. When, where, and why have people been
eating eggs?

"It is likely that female game birds were, at some time in the early history of man, perceived as a
source both of meat and of eggs. Men discovered that by removing from the nest eggs that they
did not wish to have hatch (or that they simply wished to eat), they could induce the female jungle
fowl to lay additional eggs and, indeed, to continue to lay eggs throught an extended laying
season."

Environmental Protection Agency to a proposed power plant project.

Without emissions reduction plan in place, Plant will not be approved
The court in question is the Fulton County Superior Court in Georgia and the application in question is for the planned Longleaf 1200 MW coal-fired power plant outside of Columbus. This plant was the first coal-fired plant to be proposed in Georgia for over 20 years. The project had been granted approval by an administrative court, but this was overturned by Judge Thelma Wyatt on the grounds that the plant had no plan in place to limit its CO2 emissions.

<div style="margin-bottom: The 30 most influential persons of the last 1,000 years according to
a list compiled by the History Channel and aired by AE TV. All persons are depicted in the
General Lifelines of HyperHistory except Pasteur and Ford
who are shown in the Special Lifeline for 'Science'.

Such a list is bound to be controversial because it is impossible to objectively judge what is more
important: the music of Mozart or the science of Newton ? The final ranking is really less important than
the stimulation of a lively debate.
