Congrats, citizens of Mozilla! Firefox population surpasses that of the United States

Over the past two months, Mozilla has been hoovering up new users with reckless abandon - nearly 4 million people per week. At 330 million, the projected number of Firefox users has actually outstripped the population of the United States (which is currently around 305 million).

There's a little numerical kung fu that Mozilla uses to calculate that figure, and while it might not be 100% accurate the bottom line is that there are a crapload of Firefox users out there. And all those little foxes keep chewing away at Internet Explorer's browser-share pie.

Mozilla Europe honcho Tristan Nitot was understandably enthusiastic about the recent growth. Fall typically means an uptick for Firefox. Nitot told ZDNet, "Usually it's a mixture of back-to-school and people getting new computers and installing the latest version. This boosts our numbers every year."

Tip: Set Gmail as your default email client in Firefox 3

For those of you using newly released Firefox 3, or willing to give it a try, you can take advantage of a new feature that lets you set Gmail as the default for all email links -- those that contain "mailto:" in them. If you're like me and don't have a default email client set up, then clicking these links typically launches an installation wizard for a destkop mail client, or opens some email software that you don't actually use.

Now you can configure Firefox to launch Gmail when you click on email address links and avoid the hassle. The folks over at Lifehacker published these tips on how to set it up:

Firefox now supports tagging for bookmarks. Want to use your del.icio.us bookmarks in Firefox 3? Follow these simple steps:

Export your del.icio.us bookmarks as an HTML file

Log into del.icio.us and go to settings > export/backup
Make sure the include tags box is checked, and click export to HTML

Export your Firefox 3 bookmarks as a JSON file

In Firefox click on Bookmarks > Organize bookmarks
Click on the 3rd icon at the top of the window and select Backup…

Create your combined JSON file

Upload the files you created in steps 1 and 2 here:

Re-import to Firefox

In Firefox click on Bookmarks > Organize bookmarks
Click on the 3rd icon at the top and select Restore > Choose file
Select the file you just downloaded from step 3

Firefox Popup Window Resize

For some reason, some popups in Firefox have been opening with the wrong size for the content displayed and the resize feature was disabled for the windows.

After some research, I found that in Firefox you can override this behavior by changing one of the many user preferences.

To do this

Type about:config in the location bar and press enter

Search for the "dom.disable_window_open_feature.resizable" entry

Change the boolean value from false to true

Setting this to true will prevent a window from disabling the resize feature.

Mozilla's chief operating officer John Lilly has hit out at Apple's Steve Jobs, calling his plans for building Safari's market share "out of date" and "duopolistic".

Lilly made his comments following Jobs' recent keynote at Apple's worldwide developers' conference, where the Mac maker unveiled a version of the Safari browser that is designed to run on Windows Vista or XP.

In the speech predicting how Apple would grow its market share, Jobs showed a slide with Safari dominating almost a quarter of the market — a market only shared with a single other browser, Internet Explorer.

Lilly doesn't believe this was an omission or simplification, but instead an indication that Jobs is hoping to steal the users of Firefox and other smaller browsers in order to run a "duopoly" with Redmond.

If you've ever tried copying and pasting a multi-line address into Google Maps just to realize that an input box will only take one line at a time—meaning that you have to copy and paste each line individually—there's a simple Firefox tweak that will solve this problem:

Type "about:config" in the location bar. In the "Filter" field type "singleline." You can set the value to 2 for editor.singleLine.pasteNewlines, which will allow pasting of multiple lines to input boxes.

Of course, this tweak works for any input box, so if you've bumped up against the multi-line paste problem elsewhere, consider it a problem of the past. Thanks Nikolai!

about: A simple prompt without any parameter will display the Mozilla “about” information. Since it’s accessible from the top menus as well, it’s not quite a hidden feature.

about:buildconfig Obviously, it will show the build platform configuration and parameters

about:cache Will display info and statistics regarding your disk’s cache, including the name of your cache’s directory and a list of the entries you can find there. By default, Firefox doesn’t allow you to view the cached webpages, so this can be an useful option.

about:config Oh look, many many info. Indeed, it’s the most complex and meaningful of them all. Careful on what you plan to change here, your browser won’t run properly after if you play with the wrong things.

about:plugins Of course, what is Firefox without it’s powerful extensions? This option will display detailed information about all the plugins installed for Mozilla Firefox.

about:credits It’s time to give the credit to whoever deserves it. There’s an alphabetically sorted list of all the people that gave their contribution to the development of Firefox.

about:Mozilla This is a weird thing. It will display the so-called “Book of Mozilla”. Something similar was present in Netscape too. There’s actually no real book although the quotations might give you that impression.

The latest browser stats are causing some discussion - mainly because of this article by InformationWeek, which pours water over Microsoft's claims about IE7:

"Although Microsoft recently touted the 100 millionth installation of Internet Explorer 7, Web measurement firms said that the new browser is simply being swapped out for older editions and hasn't had an impact on Firefox's continued climb."

According to Net Applications, the browser share is slowly - but surely - moving down for IE and up for Firefox:

What's curious though is that Maxthon isn't showing up in any of these browser share reports. We noted in a recent post that Maxthon reportedly has 30% of the browser market in its home country of China, second only to IE and ahead of Firefox. China is the second-biggest Web market in the world, not far behind the US and projected to pass it in the not too distant future. So if Maxthon has 30% of the China browser market (and I have to say I've yet to see any report confirming that figure), then surely it would rank pretty well on browser share reports that companies like Net Applications and WebSideStory produce? Perhaps they are not measuring international markets - but they should.

How to lower the amount of memory that Firefox uses?

But if you are in a hurry...

1. In your Firefox address bar, enter the following text: about:config

2. Scroll down to the entry titled browser.cache.memory.enable and make sure the Value is set to true. If it’s not, double-click anywhere in the browser.cache.memory.enable line and the status will change to true

3. Right-click (Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in the about:config window and select New and then Integer from the pop-up menu

4. Enter browser.cache.memory.capacity in the New integer value pop-up box

5. You’ll need to enter a number in the Enter integer value, but that number depends on how much memory you have (specifically, how much you want to 'give' Firefox). If you have 256MB or less RAM, enter 4096 as the value. If you have 512MB of RAM, enter 6144 or 8192. If you have 128MB or less RAM, you may want to consider upgrading - memory is getting very inexpensive.

6. Confirm that the new entry has been created and the integer value is correct

7. If for any reason you wish to restore the default settings, change the browser.cache.memory.capacity integer value to -1 (that’s minus one).
