Perhaps it was the bushy moustache. Maybe it was the cheeky grin. Doubtless the athletic physique played a part, too. Whatever the reason, more than two decades after Daley Thompson offended the gay community, it seems he has finally been forgiven.

Few who watched the 1984 Olympics Games in Los Angeles could forget the incident that caused the damage. At a press conference that followed his victory in the decathlon, Thompson removed a tracksuit top to reveal a t-shirt emblazoned with the question: "Is the world's second-greatest athlete gay?".

So, it is perhaps a little surprising that Thompson has been voted the most desirable British male Olympian by a poll of 500 gay subscribers to the dating website Parship.

Security at British laboratories working with some of the world's deadliest pathogens is being undermined by a lack of investment and poor maintenance, MPs warned yesterday.

A report by the Commons innovation, universities, science and skills committee said some laboratories were so dilapidated there was a risk of an incident similar to last year's "devastating" escape of foot-and-mouth virus from the animal health laboratory at Pirbright in Surrey.

The committee singled out the Health Protection Agency's laboratory at Porton Down in Wiltshire, which is regarded as Britain's frontline defence against infectious diseases, for particular criticism. The facility, which handles anthrax, haemorrhagic fever and pox viruses, was declared so run down that it was "not acceptable" that scientists were asked to work there.

Ever thought of visiting Rotterdam in the Netherlands? Maybe you should - or perhaps not if you're afraid of gorillas. Bokito, a gorilla at the Rotterdam Zoo, escaped on May 18th and reportedly attacked a female visitor of the zoo who had maintained direct eye contact with the gorilla - something that the animal interprets as a "threat gesture". Thankfully for us, we can learn from her mistake as a part of National Safety Month!

As a response to the attack, FBTO health insurance handed out "BokitoViewers" - pairs of promotional glasses with eyes that are looking away on the front of them. Clever, huh?

Thankfully, no further gorilla attacks occurred since the glasses were dispensed. Crisis averted.

Mud phobia piglet gets its own boots

A piglet scared of wallowing in mud has overcome its fears with the help of some Wellington boots

Six-week-old Cinders appears to suffer from mysophobia, a fear of dirt, after refusing to join her siblings as they splashed around in the mud

Owner Andrew Keeble from Thirsk, North Yorks, said his daughter Ellie, 12, suggested kitting her out in the tiny footwear which had been on a key ring.

"Lo and behold they fitted her like a glove," Mr Keeble said.

"She's scared of mud, but her brothers and sisters are quite happy in it.

"We've never come across this before. They are born really to go and explore, but she never really liked going in the mud."

"She's more of a pet really now and she's going to live a very long and happy life," he said.

The young saddleback has been chosen by the couple as a mascot for their campaign to raise money for the Farm Crisis Network, which supports struggling farmers.

The Eridu Genesis is written on a Sumerian cuneiform tablet of which about two thirds are now lost. The missing parts can be reconstructed from texts like the Sumerian King List and Berossus: first the creation of men, then the kings who ruled before the Great Flood, and finally the Flood itself, culminating in an offer of eternal life to the Sumerian Noah, Ziusudra. It is essentially the same story as the "Priestly document" that appears to have been a source of the canonical version of Genesis
