Value is not intrinsic in what amounts to a blog’s ability to generate traffic and revenue for the commercial end of life. Value is what a blog/blogger means to the people who read and relate and find meaning from one’s content.

Eyewitness: Raped for opposing Mugabe

Twenty three-year-old Zimbabwean Maidei [not her real name] struggled to talk about her ordeal at the hands of Zimbabwe's ruling party youths who were keeping her captive.

"I was taken hostage by Zanu-PF youths who are being led by a major and war veteran," she said.

"One of them said I had to renounce my allegiance to opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

"It was against my will and he did not use any protection."

clipper's remarks: God, I hate this kind of stuff. Although I am all for women's equality, sometimes I think we should stay out of the military if we are subject to death by our own forces as well as the "enemy."

Army Specialist Kamisha Block died last summer in what the Army officially characterized as a non-combat incident and told her family was a case of "friendly fire." Well, if by "friendly" they meant "deliberately killed by a fellow soldier that had been abusing her without punishment to date" and by "fire" they meant "shot her five times and then killed himself," then it was an honest assessment of the situation. Otherwise, they just straight out lied to cover up the fact that the Army failed to protect one of its soldiers from domestic abuse and then lied to cover up the end result of their not-benign neglect. One tonne 'Baby' marks its birth

Sixty years ago the "modern computer" was born in a lab in Manchester.

The Small Scale Experimental Machine, or "Baby", was the first to contain memory which could store a program.

The room-sized computer's ability to carry out different tasks - without having to be rebuilt - has led some to describe it as the "first modern PC".

Using just 128 bytes of memory, it successfully ran its first set of instructions - to determine the highest factor of a number - on 21 June 1948.

"We were extremely excited," Geoff Tootill, one of the builders of Baby told BBC News.

"We congratulated each other and then went and had lunch in the canteen."

Mr Tootill, and three other surviving members of the Baby team, will be honoured by the University and the British Computer Society at a ceremony in Manchester.
