According to its Web site, the Museum of Bad Art has as its motto, ”Art too bad to be ignored.” And that it is.

Curator Scott Wilson has filled this gallery with artwork found mostly in the city’s trash heaps and garbage cans, and for some strange reason it’s a hit.

Founded in the fall of 1993, the museum was originally housed in the basement of a private Boston home. It has since moved into the basement of the Dedham Community Theater, where the gallery is free and open to the public. Exhibits have such silly titles as ”Bright Colors/Dark Emotions,” ”I Just Can’t Stop,” and ”Know What You Like/Paint How You Feel.”

One exhibit brought the entire collection to Cape Cod, where the paintings were hung from pine trees.

Artwork hanging in the Museum of Bad Art comes from good artists who had bad days, as well as from truly horrible artists.

A Weizmann Institute study provides important new insights into the process of viral infection. The study, reported in the online journal PLoS Biology, reveals certain mechanisms by which mimivirus – a virus so called because it was originally thought to mimic bacteria in various aspects of their behavior – invades amoeba cells.

Living cells become infected by viruses in two steps. First, the virus penetrates the cell. Next, in the second and crucial step, the cell starts producing new viruses, which spread and infect additional cells.

Understanding how viruses infect cells and how new viruses are produced in the course of the infection allows scientists to interrupt the infection cycle, blocking viral diseases. One of the difficulties, however, is that the invasion strategies of different viruses greatly vary from one another.

Robyn Crook from the City University of New York reports that Nautilus, the ancient living ancestors of modern cephalopods, have both long and short-term memory, despite lacking the brain structures that modern cephalopods evolved for long-term memory.

Nautiloids are the sole surviving family of externally-shelled cephalopods that thrived in the tropical oceans 450--150 million years ago.

Training Nautilus pompilus to associate the smell of food with a blue light, the cephalopods eventually learned to respond to a flash of blue light by extending their tentacles. Then the scientists tested the cephalopods memories with a flash of light 3min, 30min, 1h, 6h, 12h and 24h after training.

Amazingly, Nautilus remembered their training for up to an hour before the memory was lost, but then the memory returned 6h later, lasting up to 24h. Nautilus has both short and long term memory, just like modern cephalopods, despite lacking the same brain structures.

Phoenix Robotic Arm Camera Sees Possible Ice

A view of the ground underneath NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander adds to evidence that descent thrusters dispersed overlying soil and exposed a harder substrate that may be ice.

The image received Friday night from the spacecraft's Robotic Arm Camera shows patches of smooth and level surfaces beneath the thrusters.

The Robotic Arm Camera on NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander captured this image underneath the lander on the fifth Martian day, or sol, of the mission. Descent thrusters on the bottom of the lander are visible at the top of the image.

"We were expecting to find ice within two to six inches of the surface," said Peter Smith of the University of Arizona, Tucson, principal investigator for Phoenix. "The thrusters have excavated two to six inches and, sure enough, we see something that looks like ice. It's not impossible that it's something else, but our leading interpretation is ice."
