5 Ways to Surf Like a Moron

So here it is: my 5-point method for turning your computer into a quivering pile of malware-infested, hacker-friendly trash.

1. Don't bother updating your software.

2. Believe everything you see. If a pop up window tells you that Windows has found spyware on your computer or that you have 324 errors in your registry, you'd better click on it.

3. You need more free smilies and screensavers.

Everyone loves smilies, especially the friends that "msg u bak n 4th @ myspace". And screensavers? Shut up. I love having fancy animated crap displayed on my monitor when I'm nowhere near it - that's how everyone walking past knows what a cool guy I am. None of the websites giving this stuff away want to piggyback any nasty BHOs or other malware anyways.

4. Use your main email address and the same password everywhere you register for an account.

5. Everything on Limewire is a real video or song. Dude, it's totally possible to cram Iron Man into a 72mb download, or squeeze Free Bird into a 540kb mp3

Stolen MacBook Victim Uses iSight to Bust Thieves

A White Plains, NY woman who was the victim of burglary, including her MacBook, used the Back To My Mac screen sharing feature to turn on her webcam and capture images of the unwitting culprits using the computer. As a result, police were able to arrest the thieves and recover most of the stolen goods, which included two laptops, two flat-screen televisions, two iPods, gaming consoles, DVDs and computer games.

This plan first launched into action when a co-worker of the nameless woman at the Apple Store noticed her computer online and notified the woman. She was then able to log into her computer and the rest is history. So the moral of the story is this: If you steal a MacBook, please be sure to cover the iSight with some tape. Otherwise, you could also be charged with a second degree felony. [Iohud via TUAW]

Billboard Made Out of Computer Components

Each letter of this billboard was designed & constructed using actual computer components. This is a 3-dimensional billboard, which consists of eleven 3-dimensional, eight-foot high letters. The duration for completion of the project was six weeks & once completed it was supposed to be shipped to San Jose, CA, where it was placed above Highway 101 in the Silicon Valley.

Konrad Zuse earned the semiofficial title of "inventor of the modern computer" for his series of automatic calculators, which he invented to help him with his lengthy engineering calculations.

He realized that an automatic-calculator device would require three basic elements: a control, a memory, and a calculator for the arithmetic

In 1936, Zuse made a mechanical calculator called the Z1, the first binary computer. Zuse used it to explore several groundbreaking technologies in calculator development: floating-point arithmetic, high-capacity memory and modules or relays operating on the yes/no principle

Konrad Zuse completed the Z3 in 1941, with recycled materials donated by fellow university staff and students. This was the world's first electronic, fully programmable digital computer based on a binary floating-point number and switching system

Zuse wrote the first algorithmic programming language called 'Plankalkül' in 1946, which he used to program his computers

The lonely researcher: a loser?

In Computer Science, there are so few single-author papers — how can you do a sane analysis? I propose the following comparison.

Single-author papers are riskier, but can be more original:

You can work on weird or highly risky projects: you only have to convince yourself.

You have to wait for formal peer review before you get feedback. Fast feedback tends to help you improve faster.

You have to increase your breadth. You may need to run your own experiments as well derive new theories.

Except for a few reviewers, you may end up being the sole human being to know about your contribution.

Multi-author papers are safer, but can get bureaucratic:

You have to choose safe topics if you want others to be interested.

You often do not fully appreciate and understand the work delegated to others. You tend to focus on what you know best and become more specialized.

First Computer Bug

One of the primary programmers for the Mark I was a woman, Grace Hopper. Hopper found the first computer "bug": a dead moth that had gotten into the Mark I and whose wings were blocking the reading of the holes in the paper tape. The word "bug" had been used to describe a defect since at least 1889 but Hopper is credited with coining the word "debugging" to describe the work to eliminate program faults.
