A bento (or obento) is a Japanese single-portion takeout lunch packed in a box; that may be prepared at home, bought at a combini (convenience store) or from a restaurant.

A bento generally consists of rice or noodles and some form of protein (e.g., meat, poultry, fish, tofu) accompanied by side dishes of raw, simmered, or pickled vegetables.

It’s not uncommon for Japanese mothers to prepare an elaborate boxed lunch, playfully and creatively decorated, to entice their children to eat all of their food when they’re at school.

Food color and texture is also considered in choosing what goes together in a box, ensuring contrast that’s pleasing not only to the eyes but to the palate as well.

The world class lodgings are not the only draw to Qatar. Built in December of 2008, the Museum of Islamic Art, designed by I.M. Pei, is one of the world’s most thorough collections of Islamic artifacts. In his usual dramatic fashion, Mr. Pei designed the building to contrast with the majestic and lavish buildings surrounding it. Instead of striking into the night sky, the building simply rises with an understated grandeur.

In the nearly 70 years following the discovery of oil in Qatar, the country has enjoyed a standard of living akin to that of the world’s economic powers. Further, because of the massive influx of capital and especially appealing tax structures, the country has become a major player in many of the most profitable industries. The country is home to the Al Jazeera television station and played stage to the 2006 Asian Games.

It is such a tranquil, beautiful place, the rooms are spacious, clean and modern, the staff were amazing, the food was lovely, the facilities were great and the grounds were large and very well maintained. We never felt crowded.

The service was impeccable and very personal but not obtrusive.

It is a very quiet hotel and that is exactly what we wanted, we were so well looked after by all the staff especially in the restaurant.

Nothing was too much trouble, the chef came out and spoke to us regularly, we had special meals whenever we wanted (with notice of course). The menu rotated every 3/4 days so there was plenty of choice.

We loved the breakfast, the croissants and omelettes have left a lasting impression!

The evening meals were always to a high standard and beautifully cooked.

The restaurant and the bar are beautiful buildings, the height of the ceilings are so impressive. The flowers were lovely and changed regularly.

Todaiji, a temple complex in the city of Nara in Nara Prefecture, a United Nations World Heritage Site, it was built in the year 743. At that time Buddhism was at its height, and served as a state religion. The best-known relic at Todaiji Temple is its Daibutsu, a colossal statue that, with 15 meters (49 feet) in height, is the world’s largest gilded bronze Buddha.

Petra is an amazing, once in a lifetime must-see site.

The entry price is not too bad, but as you really need three days to even scratch the surface it does tot up. We were lucky, having worked for a month on an archaeological project we were granted free entry. I remember thinking I would definitely be happy to pay it so...

If you get the chance...
- Visit over at least two-three days
- see the sun set from the Monastery (one of the highest spots)
- Walk up to the High Place of Sacrifice - the views are phenomenal
- Get lost in the arid expanse of open landscape exploring tombs and temples without seeing another soul.
- Visit the 'Petra by Night' display and experience the magnificent sikhs and Treasury lit up by entirely by candle-light(I have seen other equivalents such as at Luxor and Giza in Egypt and they do not compare)
- Stay at the Cleopetra hotel (Rough Guide)
- Treat yourself to an ice-cream at the Movenpick hotel near the entrance.

Mysterious Tubular Clouds Defy Explanation

These long, crazy-looking clouds can grow to be 600 miles long and can move at up to 35 miles per hour, causing problems for aircraft even on windless days.

Known as Morning Glory clouds, they appear every fall over Burketown, Queensland, Australia, a remote town with fewer than 200 residents. A small number of pilots and tourists travel there each year in hopes of “cloud surfing” with the mysterious phenomenon.

Similar tubular shaped clouds called roll clouds appear in various places around the globe. But nobody has yet figured out what causes the Morning Glory clouds.

The ‘Red Center’ is a colloqiual nickname given to the Southern Desert region that stretches from the Simpson desert to North of Alice. Notably, the Red Center is where you will find Australia’s most famous monolith: Uluru. The only town with any sizable population is Alice Springs, a town founded first by Aborigines then resettled by Australian explorers. The Arrernte Aboriginal people settled in the Central Australian Desert in and around Alice Springs more than 50,000 years ago. Their name for the town is Mparntwe.

Red Center is most noted for the great many places of interest to discerning adventure travelers. The Uluru, for instance, is the Red Center’s most famous National Park is undoubtedly Australia’s most recognizable natural icon. Rising more than 348 meters high, the monolith has untold cultural importance for the traditional aboriginal owners, the Anangu people.
