Alzheimer's Drug May Prevent Brain Damage in Preemies

Researchers have discovered that a drug marketed to slow the progression of memory loss in Alzheimer's disease may also prevent brain damage in as many as 35 percent of premature infants.

Preemies "are a very very fragile group of patients," Jensen says, adding that the strokes are the main cause of cerebral palsy‚Äîan incurable neurological disorder that affects the motor function of 500,000 people in the U.S., with 8,000 infants diagnosed yearly.

Battery-powered car race is on

General Motors Corp. and Toyota have announced plans to introduce plug-in hybrids in 2010, and both will use the lithium-ion batteries.

GM, which just this month gave the plug-in Chevy Volt the final go-ahead, says the Volt will have a range of 40 miles on electric power, so motorists who drive less than that between charges won't use any gasoline. After the batteries drain, the Volt's gas engine recharges them, adding another 600 or so miles to the vehicle's range.

Automakers also are experimenting with fuel-cell vehicles such as the Honda FCX Clarity that use hydrogen to generate electrical power, but so far they have only built small test fleets. Analysts doubt fuel-cell vehicles will be sold in volume before 2015 because there are few hydrogen filling stations and fuel-cell cars currently cost more than $100,000 to build.

Sunspot activity has not resumed after hitting an 11-year low in March last year, raising fears that - far from warming - the globe is about to return to an Ice Age.

Astronaut and geophysicist Phil Chapman, the first Australian to become an astronaut with NASA, said pictures from the U.S. Solar and Heliospheric Observatory showed no spots on the sun.

He said the world cooled quickly between January last year and January this year, by about 0.7C.

"This is the fastest temperature change in the instrumental record, and it puts us back to where we were in 1930," Dr. Chapman writes in The Australian today.

"If the temperature does not soon recover, we will have to conclude that global warming is over."

"I support federal legislation that would outlaw flag desecration, much like laws that currently prohibit the burning of crosses," Clinton said in a statement in 2005, explaining why she put her name onto Bennett's bill.

Supporters have portrayed these seemingly contradictory positions as evidence of Clinton's skill as a lawmaker—undermining a dreadful yet popular amendment by promoting what looked like a compromise but was actually a rope-a-dope law doomed to being struck down by the courts if it had passed.

Clinton's positions were "a simple attempt to have it both ways," editorialized The New York Times, which opposes flag-burning bans. The American Legion, which supports such bans, blasted Clinton for using a "tired political ploy."

Not "why aren't you wearing a flag pin tonight, Sen. Clinton?" though that would have been appropriate because, like presumptive Republican nominee John McCain, Clinton often doesn't wear such a pin.

Four year ago today, an unarmored, undermanned convoy of fuel trucks was erroneously sent directly into some of the fiercest fighting Iraq had seen. When the smoke cleared, nine Americans lay dead, 17 were seriously wounded and two missing in action. One still is.

An Army after-action report obtained exclusively by Military.com shows it all could have been avoided but for grievous errors made when accuracy mattered most - from pre-mission assessments of how dangerous the route was to a misdirected email that would have stopped the convoy before it ever left the base.

These costly mistakes sent 19 unarmored fuel tankers driven by civilian contractors and guarded by a single platoon from the 724th, a Reserve company out of Illinois, down "IED alley" and into a battle between the 1st Cavalry Division and hundreds of insurgents.
