GOOGLE ANNOUNCES PURGE OF AD-HEAVY WEB SITES

May 23, 2007 -- Google is trying to clean up its search results by cracking down on dubious Web sites that contain little content but lots of ads.

The search giant has notified a number of Web publishers in the last few days that they will be dropped from its popular "AdSense" program starting June 1.

The cut-off notices jolted the online ad world, where hundreds of thousands of people make money in exchange for allowing Google to place ads on their Web sites.

Google's AdSense software has made it easy for advertisers to piggyback on any Web site - no matter how obscure - that attracts an audience.

For example, on a travel Web site, Google's AdSense will automatically serve up relevant travel-related ads on that site. Web site publishers then get paid each time a visitor clicks on one of the ads supplied by Google.

Web 2.0 how-to design guide

In this tutorial, I describe various common graphic design elements in modern web ("2.0") design style.

I then attempt to explain why they work (i.e. why they have become common), as well as how, when and where you might use each element in your designs.

It follows on from my Current Style article, and analyses in greater depth the design features of the current "Web 2.0" design style.

Summary of features covered

The list below is a summary of many of the common features of typical "Web 2.0" sites.

Clearly, a site doesn't need to exhibit all these features to work well, and displaying these features doesn't make a design "2.0" - or good!

I've already addressed some of these factors in my introductory Current Style article.

I'm using the term "Web 2.0 design" to describe the prevailing style of web design I introduce in my current style article.

Many people use the term "Web 2.0" to describe:

a resurgence in the web economy
a new level of technological interactivity between web sites and services
or social phenomena deriving from new types of online communities and social networks

Many others also use the term in reference to a recent school of web design. I'm comfortable with using it in that context here.

Photoshop Tutorials to Create Web 2.0 Design Effects

Web 2.0 has brought in a new design revolution characteristized by soft shadows, reflections, gradients and star shapes (violators), rounded corners and other similar imaging effects. And Adobe photoshop is a professional image editing software that makes these image designs easy to make.

Photoshop Lab has a great photoshop tutorials in 2 parts of their series - the Web 2.0 Design Kit that will teach you the necessary photoshop skill to let you design these images for your visit and become a photoshop expert yourself.

The first tutorial shows how to make Gradients (the reflective or glass effect seen in Apple’s “Aqua Buttons”), Reflections, soft shadows (and glows) and popping up star shapes (or violators) which are now popular with Web 2.0 professional web designers.

The second tutorial will teach you to make Diagonal Line Patterns and rounded corners, a new fad of web designers.

Web 2.0 Buttons with Photoshop

Web 2.0 style buttons

Nowadays Web 2.0 style becomes more popular. Every day tons of sites which has simple, bright and very interesting things, appear in Network. There are no standards about creating any Web 2.0 elements, but we have several typical features, for example and clean colors, many gradients.

Today I want to show you how to create Web 2.0 styled button using Adobe Photoshop CS2.

Open the Photoshop, create new document for the button.
Create shape for future button using Rounded Rectangle tool on toolbar, specify round radius.
Right click on rectangle layer in Layers palette, choose Blending Options.
Set the Gradient Overlay effect parameters. I have following color of first and second thumb: 434343, third – 000000.
You can find Stroke effect parameters below. Stroke color is 363636.
Set the Inner Glow effect options.
As the result you will get following image:
Create rectangle using Rounded Rectangle tool, it will be used as button glare.
Right click on “glare” layer, choose Rasterize Layer.
Click Edit in Quick Mask Mode on toolbar.
Choose Gradient Tool, create gradient like following:
After leaving quick mask mode, you will get selection area. Click Delete button.
Add layer with text “Entries RSS” and RSS icon. Set Drop Shadow effect parameters.

Now you got following button:

After changing different effects parameters, adding or changing elements, I got following buttons:

January 07, 2007 (Computerworld) -- Propelled by the release of its Version 2.0 in October, the free Firefox Web browser saw almost a 50% increase in use during 2006, according to one Web measurement firm.

The open-source Firefox browser was used by 14% of computers online at the end of 2006, according to Aliso Viejo, Calif.-based Net Applications. That was 46% higher than its 9.6% share of the browser market at the beginning of the year.

The biggest loser was Microsoft's Internet Explorer, which also released a new version, Internet Explorer 7, last year. Even so, its market share fell to 79.6% from 85.1% at the start of 2006.

Apple Computer Inc.'s Safari Web browser rode increased sales of Mac computers to finish the year with 4.2% of the market, up from 3.1% at the beginning of 2006. Safari is only available on Apple hardware running Mac OS X.

The Opera Web browser also grew its share to 0.9% of the market from 0.6%, after signing deals with cell phone makers and game console makers such as Nintendo to have the software bundled with those devices.

AOL's Netscape was, like Internet Explorer, also a loser. It started the year with 1.24% but saw its share of the market fall to 0.9%.
