And the first result is…well..see it for yourself.

2. And the first result is Microsoft’s Live Search !! I know that the algorithm has to do something with it, but still Google should be the first result because that’s what people associate the word ‘ search ‘ with.

3. Jill explains that this tag comes in handy when you have a limited time offer promotional page, and on this page, the promotion will expire on a specific date. By using the "unavailable_after" tag, you can tell Google that they should not crawl this page, after the promotion expires. There are several practical scenarios for this tag. We have emailed Dan Crow and others at Google for when this tag is expected to be supported.

Jill's Getting Into Google has a lot of other useful and interesting topics, in my opinion, it is worth a full read.

Tags: google, internet, we, tags, web development, technology

<clipSource>http://searchengineland.com/070712-093059.php</clipSource>

Google Search Tip

clipped by: Scattered_Fusion

Clip Source: lifehacker.com

Productivity blogger Dumb Little Man has put together twenty of the most basic tips that can make your Google searches more efficient.

May 23, 2007 -- Google is trying to clean up its search results by cracking down on dubious Web sites that contain little content but lots of ads.

The search giant has notified a number of Web publishers in the last few days that they will be dropped from its popular "AdSense" program starting June 1.

The cut-off notices jolted the online ad world, where hundreds of thousands of people make money in exchange for allowing Google to place ads on their Web sites.

Google's AdSense software has made it easy for advertisers to piggyback on any Web site - no matter how obscure - that attracts an audience.

For example, on a travel Web site, Google's AdSense will automatically serve up relevant travel-related ads on that site. Web site publishers then get paid each time a visitor clicks on one of the ads supplied by Google.

Tags: google, web, internet, technology, advertising, adsense, ads

<clipSource>http://www.nypost.com/seven/05232007/business/ad__subtract_business_holly_m__sanders.htm</clipSource>

Download Free Cell Phone Videos (3gp) with Google

clipped by: Scattered_Fusion

Clip Source: www.tech-recipes.com

Do you want to download a bunch of free videos for your cellular phone? Start your collection from the open collections of others.

I know I beat this poor search technique to death; however, I always enjoy finding new uses for it.

This time we will be using a google search to find people's open directories of 3gp videos. This is a common video format used to view video on cell phones.

Open Directories of 3gp files:

Google: -inurl:htm -inurl:html -inurl:asp intitle:"index of" 3gp

Specific Searches for 3gp files:

Google: filetype:3gp inurl:3gp

Now this search is not nearly as sexy as it brings in a ton of junk. However, this search casts your net wider. The magic here is the filetype and inurl filters telling google to only include these video files in your search. By leaving these filters in place, you can add more search terms to narrow your search.

For example, to search 3gp video files that are associated with rock...

Google: filetype:3gp inurl:3gp rock

If you have a splash page on your website, make sure you have a text link that allows you to pass it.
I’ve seen many websites with a fancy flash introduction on the index and no other way to navigate around it. Well, Google can’t read into your flash page, and therefore it cannot bypass it. All you have to do is put a text link to your website’s second index, and the deed is done.

2. Make sure you have no broken links
I know this is kind of obvious, but you’ll be surprised to find out how many errors is the Google crawler experiencing daily due broken links. Therefore, you’d better check and double check every internal link of your webpage before submission. Don’t forget that your links are also your visitor’s paths to your content. It’s not all about Google, you know :)

3. Check the TITLE tags
Since you are able to search in title tags on Google and since the title tags is displayed in the top of your browser window, I’d say this is an important aspect you need to check. This doesn’t mean you have to compile a >20 keywords list there. Instead, make it a readable sentence since it’s viewable by both crawlers and surfers.

4. Check the META tags
Rumors about Google not caring about META tags are not 100% correct. Google relies on these tags to describe a site when there’s a lot of navigation code that wouldn’t make sense to a human searcher, so why not make sure you’re all in order and set up some valid KEYWORDS and a valid DESCRIPTION. You never know.

5. Check your ALT tags
The ALT tags are probably the most neglected aspect of a website since no one bothers to put them in order. It’s definitely a plus if you do, so Google spider can get a clue about all of your graphics. However, don’t go extreme and start explaining in an ALT tag that a list bullet is a list bullet.

6. Check your frames

7. Do you have dynamically generated pages?

8. Update your content regularly

9. The robots.txt

10. I thought I would do a little math and see what could be saved by moving a high volume site to the black format.

Take at look at Google, who gets about 200 million
queries a day. Let's assume each query is displayed for about 10 seconds; that means Google is running for about 550,000 hours every day on some desktop. Assuming that users run Google in full screen mode, the shift to a black background will save a total of 15 (74-59) watts. That turns into a global savings of 8.3 Megawatt-hours per day, or about 3000 Megawatt-hours a year. Now take into account that about 25 percent of the monitors in the world are CRTs, and at 10 cents a kilowatt-hour, that's $75,000, a goodly amount of energy and dollars for changing a few color codes.

[ed. His recommendations are instrumental for anyone with a website, as they are pretty universal.

Winfield has three top tips for Balsam: Her site needs to be linked to from other quality websites. She should have a clear website title. And she needs descriptive copy that includes the search terms (called keywords) that articulate how she wants to be discovered by search engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN, he says.

"Keywords direct the search engines to how to find you," Winfield says. "And links are the holy grail. If a lot of sites link to you, that means you have authority and should be placed higher than others."

Balsam's front page was virtually devoid of text, beyond tabs for inside pages and contact information. Winfield says this is a huge no-no. Google's spider crawls the Internet compiling website information, looking to keywords on the page for how to reference the site.

In his analysis, Winfield wrote: "Add some good, descriptive text about you and your services that gently incorporates the one- or two-keyword phrases that you are concentrating on. For example: 'Family therapy specialist in Orange & Los Angeles County — Yaffa Balsam MFT.' "

The first step for many businesses is realizing exactly what their keywords should be. A house painter, for example, shouldn't use "house painting" as a keyword, because it's so broad. Instead, the painter might drill down to the more specific "interior house painting" or "exterior house painting."

Winfield directed Balsam to a free tool Google offers for keyword tips —adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal. There, USA TODAY typed in Balsam's "Family Therapy" keyword, and found many variations, including "family therapist," "family marriage therapy" and "family therapy counseling."

Tags: google, technology, tips, website

<clipSource>http://www.usatoday.com/money/smallbusiness/2007-01-17-small-biz-google-usat_x.htm</clipSource>

Real-time quotes for free on Google

clipped by: Scattered_Fusion

Clip Source: googleblog.blogspot.com

1/11/2007 09:16:00 PM

Posted by Katie Jacobs Stanton, Group Product Manager

At Google, we get excited about making all kinds of information accessible to everyone. The more up-to-date the information, the more valuable it is. This is particularly true in the world of finance; information, and timing of that information, is money. Today, real-time quotes are not freely and easily available on the web. Some websites offer one real-time quote at a time, but typically only after you have enrolled in a service and/or signed a complicated legal agreement. Other sites approach the problem differently and show you streaming delayed data, but that doesn't solve the problem either -- it masks it. What's really important is getting free, easy and fast access to real-time quotes so you know how the market or your company is doing now, not as of twenty minutes ago.

As a result, we've worked with the SEC, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and our D.C. trade association, NetCoalition, to find a way to bring stock data to Google users in a way that benefits users and is practical for all parties. We have encouraged the SEC to ensure that this data can be made available to our users at fair and reasonable rates, and applaud their recent efforts to review this issue. Today, the NYSE has moved the issue a great step forward with a proposal to the SEC which if approved, would allow you to see real-time, last-sale prices across all Google properties including Google Finance, Personalized Google, Mobile, and of course, Google.com. It won't matter if you're on Wall Street or Main Street -- you'll have free, easy and fast access to real-time prices from NYSE on Google.

So stay tuned on our progress with this. We're excited that financial data as we know it is about to change. In the meantime, set up your portfolio on Google Finance today.

Labels: Google Finance

When the user gives Yahoo permission to “update” – what they think is just Yahoo Messenger – the updater downloads IE 7 (which we already know to be buggy) and then proceeds to hijack many browser preferences – including search engine settings.

The updater’s first sneaky switch is to associate all web links to IE 7 instead of the user’s default browser – in Jarrod’s case all links started opening in IE 7 instead of Firefox. The next step in the process is an ambiguous error message saying your search settings have been changed and would you like to either “fix settings” or “allow change”. Thinking you are about to have your browser settings switched away from your default; most users – like Jarrod - will click “fix settings”. Upon doing so, they’ll find their homepage is now switched to Yahoo as the default!

If you think that’s sneaky, wait until you see what happens next!

Not only does the Yahoo download of IE 7 hijack your homepage, it also switches IE’s default search engine to Yahoo, without permission. Jarrod didn’t even realize that this had changed until the Google Toolbar displayed a warning that an attempt had been made to switch the default search engine from Google to Yahoo.

Can you believe that such a battle is going on for your search settings? Is Yahoo deliberately using old-school spyware tactics to try and win new users, are they that desperate?
