Susan Katz thought she knew all about caring for old people. Trained as a social worker, she had spent more than 15 years working for home care agencies and for assisted and independent living facilities. So when her own parents began to falter in their mid-80s – her mother had Parkinson’s disease, and her father was debilitated by the aftereffects of prostate cancer treatment – she felt prepared to step in and help.

Yet Ms. Katz has found the past year and a half an eye-opening experience. Below, in an excerpt condensed from a conversation we had, she relates how her professional experiences in caregiving diverge from her personal ones.

My blind spot was, I didn’t recognize that family members are not like clients. Your family is awash in all its emotionality. I wouldn’t be perceived as a professional; I was a daughter. You may think you know the right professional answers, but you can’t make decisions for your parents.

With your family, it doesn’t work that way.

Ninite – Easily Install All Your Favorite Free Apps In One Go

So when you get a new machine or you do a reformat what is the first thing you do? If you are not imaging your system, chances are you will need to install the pieces of software that enable your machine to be a tool instead of a big paper weight.

I find myself downloading Putty, VLC, Firefox and a multitude of other applications each time I install. The ones I downloaded the last time around are easily outdated.

It sure would be! And now we will show you how you can do just that! Head on over to Ninite and once you are there it will be a breeze to get the applications you want on your system with a limited amount of clicking. (Note: Ninite currently works only on Windows PCs)

Upon checking my start menu all of the applications I choose were installed with the newest versions. This is a very handy tool!

Her mother had a cousin living in Niagara Falls that year. She told the family

that she and her neighbours woke up in the night feeling something was wrong.

It took a while but they finally realized that it was the lack of noise. They had

all become so used to the roar of the falls that the silence was unusual enough

to alert their senses. Of course at that time nearly all the houses were near the

falls. Amazing pictures! Almost 100 years old. Can you imagine walking on

Niagara falls?
