Couple pleads guilty to allowing minors to drink alcohol on their property

A Sikeston, Mo., couple previously facing multiple counts of supplying alcohol to minors pleaded guilty today to charges of permitting consumption by minors on property they controlled, their attorney said.

The Cheathams pleaded guilty to four counts each of allowing minors to drink on their property, but denied that they supplied liquor, said attorney Stephen Wilson.

They opted to pay fines of $500 per charge rather than the six months in jail, he said.

"These folks were really just concerned with keeping children safe," he said.

CHARLESTON, Mo. -- Sikeston, Mo., police lacked probable cause when they secured computer data from the household of a Sikeston couple charged with serving alcohol to minors, their attorney argued at a motion hearing Wednesday.

Attorney Stephen C. Wilson argued to suppress the evidence collected from two computers belonging to Mark Cheatham and Terry Brewer-Cheatham, because the search warrants issued to secure the data contained insufficient evidence.

Scott County Prosecuting Attorney Paul Boyd admitted both search warrants and the computer data printout, an Internet invitation to the party, as evidence, saying the facts contained in the documents spoke for themselves

The Cheathams were charged with 30 counts each of supplying alcohol to minors at a graduation party they held at their Greenbrier Drive residence in Sikeston on May 20.

If convicted, the Cheathams face a maximum penalty of six months in the county jail and up to a $500 fine for each of the 30 counts.

A FEW months ago, Stephen Ironside, a student at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, confronted a minor but modern tragedy: the iPod that filled his life with song stopped working.

The device was out of warranty, and Apple would not fix it free. So he left it in a drawer until he happened to read a blog posting on CrunchGear.com that described how he might fix it — with a small, folded piece of paper. Mr. Ironside celebrated by posting thanks on the blog: “I’ve been on CDs for months. You saved my life (and my iPod).”

Some sites like macfixit.com, fixmyxp.com and macosxhints.com are devoted to a single product, while others like avsforum.com sponsor debates on a big product area, in this case home theaters, televisions and stereos. People with laptops that have suddenly gone blank can turn to www.notebookforums.com or notebookreview.com, and there are even a few sites like www.highdefforum.com for fixing TVs.

Hearing postponed for Sikeston, Mo., couple

Wednesday's hearing for the Sikeston, Mo., couple charged with multiple counts of supplying alcohol to minors has been postponed until Nov. 28. Circuit Judge Terry L. Brown agreed to the extension to allow time for the Cheathams' attorney, Stephen C. Wilson, to prepare evidence for a preliminary hearing. In July, Mark Cheatham, 49, and his wife, Terry Brewer-Cheatham, 47, pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from a May 20 party at their home. Officers from Sikeston's Department of Public Safety responded to complaints of loud music and underage drinking at their home May 20 and broke up a graduation party. The Cheathams were charged with 30 counts each of supplying alcohol to minors after 30 people, ages 17 to 20, at the party received summonses for underage possession of alcohol. If found guilty, the Cheathams face up to six months in jail and a $500 fine for each charge.

Booze battle rips further at fabric of the Missouri Baptist Convention

These days, if you're talking about the Missouri Baptist Convention, you're talking about booze. And that was the case at the group's annual meeting this week in Osage Beach.

And, in the last year, some convention leaders have rejected a group of younger church pastors who have a view of alcohol use that contradicts the traditional Southern Baptist position of total abstinence.

"I understand that the Bible does not say, never says, 'Thou shalt not drink,'" said Tolliver. "It is also true to say that the Bible does not specifically refer to drinking as a sin. However, … the only Christian position in this 21st century Show-Me state environment that we live in is total abstinence!"
