Network news shows have been delivering overly negative reports since 2003. This was standard operating procedure, just more horrific than usual. In 2006, 17 network stories drew comparisons with the Great Depression, from U.S. savings rates to climate change.

The major media give us only two degrees of economic news — close to "apocalyptic" and worse. They are so outlandishly negative that coverage of the Bear Stearns buyout was vastly worse than reporting of the 1929 stock market crash.

ABC, CBS and NBC made comparisons to America's worst economic turmoil — the Great Depression — more than 40 times in the first four months of 2008.

Compare that with how the New York Times summed up its own market outlook in an Oct. 30, 1929, story after billions of dollars were lost in record trading.

Words like "optimism" and "hope" shouted off the pages of major newspapers.

It was easy to find good news amid the market chaos in 1929. Even in the Times, the most downbeat outlet studied from that era, positive stories still outnumbered negative ones by nearly a 3-to-1 ratio.

The modern news media had no such "confidence" in the markets.

Storm Subsides Between William Gray, CSU

The dean of CSU's College of Engineering, which oversees atmospheric sciences, said she spoke with Gray about terminating media support for his forecasts solely because of the strain it placed on the college's lone media staffer.

"It really has nothing to do with his stand on global warming," said the dean, Sandra Woods. "He's a great faculty member."

By pioneering the science of seasonal hurricane forecasting, William Gray turned a university far from the stormy seas into a hurricane research mecca.

But last year, the long-term relationship between Gray and Colorado State University, where he has worked for nearly half a century, nearly unraveled in an episode that highlights the politically charged atmosphere that surrounds the global warming debate.

University officials told Gray that handling media inquiries related to his forecasting required too much time and detracted from efforts to promote other professors' work.

"This is obviously a flimsy excuse and seems to me to be a cover for the Department's capitulation to the desires of some (in their own interest) who want to reign (sic) in my global warming and global warming-hurricane criticisms," Gray wrote in the memo, obtained by the Chronicle.

Gray initially declined to speak about the issue, but on Tuesday Gray acknowledged the dispute.

'Should Be' News

That Iraq has disappeared from the news--save the stories of suicide bombings that, because the way they are the opposite of the way things 'should be,' are judged to be news--is a dangerous trend.

As it pertains to Iraq, the disappearance of coverage is based on the more tried and true definition of news: News is the opposite of what 'should be.'

Compounding the problem is the people who decide what 'should be' as in this modern era most reporters go into the business to affect some form of change in the world or to make the world a better place according to their vision.

But, there is still the disconnect between the reality of war, the armed competition between two forces to impose the way things 'should be,' and what the media thinks war 'should be.'

In the conduct of war, the media has only established a 'should be' standard on one side

The behaviour of coalition forces is tested against the standard of what should be, but the Mohammedan Jihadist's conduct is never questioned

The success of coalition actions, tactics and strategies are constantly compared to a standard, but the absolute failure of the Mohammedan Jihadists is never noted

An arbitrary standard, is a biased standard.

Newspaper Editor Becomes ACLU Director

ABILENE, Texas -- Terri Burke, former editor of the Abilene Reporter-News, has been named executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas.

Burke, 56, will begin work at the ACLU of Texas on Tuesday. Her duties will include lobbying, fundraising, administering the organization and communicating with the public.

Burke said her new job seems like a continuation of her work in the newspaper business.

On New Year's Eve, Gallup's poll delivered unto us the good news that 84% of Americans say they are satisfied with how things are going for them personally.

One then has to account for the darker data Gallup released two weeks earlier: Some 70% of those responding believe the nation is headed in the wrong direction.

It is to suggest that the never-off eye of modern political media leaves the impression that nothing good is possible. If progress happens, as with the surge in Iraq or a new therapy for cancer, it must be diminished by "analysis," listing four things that could "go wrong." As a way to absorb the way the world works, this is depressing. Good things happen. Get over it.

The New Year demands an admission that some good has been achieved, not by the wave of a politician's magic wand but through many daily hands at work in the nation.

20 headless bodies

… nope

11 close family members of Jordanian-based Baathist reporter Dia al-Kawwaz, who runs the online anti-Iraq newspaper Shabeqat Akhbar al-Iraq, were slaughtered in Baghdad.

…err, not so much…

12-25 "construction workers" were killed in a Bombing by NATO forces in Afghanistan

…yeah… the “construction workers” were actually “Taliban”…

13 people were slaughtered by Al-Qaeda in their sleep

…except they weren’t….

There was an explosion at a refinery in Baghdad. The media immediately reported it as a rocket attack

…nope!

…Nope!

I also can’t believe how gullible reporters are when they actually report on these matters. I don’t want to get on a rant about media types, because I’m sure some of them are nice guys who do hard work, but this type of reporting reflects badly on the reporters, the news company, and the media overall. I’m astonished that these folks have any credibility left.

What if the heads being counted to certify an alleged "consensus" arrived at their positions by counting heads?

"Availability cascade" has been coined for the way a proposition can become irresistible simply by the media repeating it; "informational cascade" for the tendency to replace our beliefs with the crowd's beliefs; and "reputational cascade" for the rational incentive to do so.

Public opinion cascades are powerful but also fragile--liable to be overturned in an instant when new information comes along. The current age of global warming politics will certainly end with a whimper once a few consecutive years of cooling are recorded

No, this wouldn't prove or disprove a human role in warming, only that climate is variable and subject to complicated influences. But it would also eliminate the large incentive for politicians to traffic in doom-laden predictions--because such predictions would no longer command media assent and would cease to function as levers to redistribute resources

clipper's remarks: Macbeth was discharged from the army before he had even completed basic training, because according to representatives with the U.S. Army, he was either unfit, unsuitable, or both, to serve in the military. It is the anti-war left that needs to be condemned, once again.The anti-war Left keeps getting caught promoting bogus allegations made by "phony soldiers" because the Left is desperate for any allegations that are made which might discredit Operation Iraqi Freedom. They do this for one simple reason – they so hate this war that they are determined to undermine the war effort and hope that America loses so they can play a pathetic and dangerous game of "I told you so."

Rush Limbaugh has come under attack by liberal bloggers and some in the news media for a statement he made on his show about "phony soldiers." I am not a huge Rush Limbaugh fan, but he was spot on. I have said so numerous times here

Despite the cries of protest from the anti-war and anti-military crowd, Limbaugh was spot-on right in his characterization. There is a story that the media is not telling you about his "phony Soldiers" comment.

Limbaugh mentioned in his show the case of Jessie Adam Macbeth, who falsely claimed to have committed war crimes during service in Iraq. The allegations struck a chord with those who wish to regularly impugn the character and honor of the men and women of the United States military. They jumped on the story like jackals on fallen prey, ripping away at the integrity of our heroic troops who serve in a hot war some 7,000 miles away.

There’s only one problem. Jessie Macbeth was lying. He was not an Army Ranger as he had claimed,
