Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president, was reported to be a very interesting character. When not having his head massaged with Vaseline during breakfasts in bed or riding his own mechanical bull, he was ringing the White House doorbell and then running off to hide.

8. So far, all American presidents have claimed ancestry limited to one or more of just seven nationalities: Dutch, English, German, Irish, Scottish, Swiss, and Welsh.

9. Grover Cleveland was the only president to openly admit that he had fathered an illegitimate child.

10. Popular culture is loaded with myths and half-truths. Most are harmless. But when doctors start believing medical myths, perhaps it's time to worry.

In the British Medical Journal this week, researchers looked into several common misconceptions, from the belief that a person should drink eight glasses of water per day to the notion that reading in low light ruins your eyesight.

"We got fired up about this because we knew that physicians accepted these beliefs and were passing this information along to their patients," said Dr. Aaron Carroll, assistant professor of pediatrics at the Indiana University School of Medicine. "And these beliefs are frequently cited in the popular media."

all

clipped by: Aribeth
clipper's remarks: By taking action — even if it’s neither rational nor likely to be successful — they can at least be seen to have done something. If they stand and wait until the ball is kicked and then fail to stop it, they feel worse because of their inaction; and others are far more likely to criticize them for not appearing even to try. It’s better to try a poor action than try a better — but seemingly passive — response if both fail; even though the “inactive” response is more rational and based on a better likelihood of success.

In today’s business world, action is preferred over the alternatives and is more likely to result in forgiveness when a mistake is made. You can always say that you tried. The person who does nothing is doubly damned: once for the mistake and again for not “doing something.”This urge to action — to get things done — is more emotional than rational. “Wait and see” risks your credibility and reputation, even where it can be shown to be the optimal course.

Clip Source: www.lifehack.org

Fresh research suggests our bias for action is emotional, not rational.

Ofer H. Surprisingly, it is standing in the center of the goal and doing nothing until the trajectory of the ball can be seen. This resulted in a 1 in 3 success rate — far higher than the average.

Yet goalkeepers almost never act in this way.

Fearing censure more than failure

Others value action, even when it’s wrong

The researchers suggest that the answer lies in the goalkeepers’ emotions and the response they meet from others after failing.

Tags: economics, football

<clipSource>http://www.lifehack.org/articles/productivity/why-doing-nothing-may-sometimes-be-the-best-action-of-all.html</clipSource>

Russian Bombers Intercepted Off Alaska's Coast

clipped by: Rustee

Clip Source: www.militarytimes.com

More and more American and Canadian fighter jets are scrambling and intercepting Russian bombers flying off the Alaskan coast, exacerbating tensions between the former Cold War foes.

There have been 16 such intercepts since July, Pacific Air Forces Commander Gen. At first glance, the above photo taken near Wellington, Colorado shows only a featureless blue sky. Nevertheless, it illustrates a phenomenon often overlooked. The sky is not one blue color but a gradation, lighter at the horizon and darker overhead -- the more atmosphere you look through the lighter the blue. Directly overhead there are only a few miles of atmosphere (troposphere), but if you look toward the horizon, the path length of light is significantly greater. As a result, more of the shorter wavelengths (blue and violet colors) are scattered or attenuated. The deepest blues are found approximately 90 degrees away from wherever the Sun is in the sky. Photo taken on November 24, 2005.
