How Stuff Works

A very cool website that contains explanations of those mysteries in life that you just can't figure out. A few examples are Murphy's Law, Pickpockets, and Light Sabers (Yes, light sabers).

Seriously, the coolest music-related site I've seen. You choose the mood, intensity, and genres of the music you would like to hear and the site will provide you with a virtual web of music to explore. The web evolves with each choice you make. You can click on any song in the web at anytime.

Set mutliple Home pages
Tools---->Options--->General and seperate each page with the pipe | symbol 
(Shift+button above the enter button)
eg. http://forums.mozillazine.org|http://www.google.com|http://www.yahoo.com

Let Firefox complete web addresses for you
Type in something like 'yahoo' in the address bar and hit:
Ctrl+Enter to add http://www. before and .com after the text
Similarly, Shift+Enter will add http://www. and .net
and Ctrl+Shift+Enter will add http://www. and .org

Add a keyword for a bookmark
You can give "keywords" to your bookmarks by right-clicking the bookmark and then
Properties. If you put a string in the keyword field now you can type that keyword in
the address bar and it will go to that bookmark. For example, if I have a bookmark for
Fox News website, I might give it the keyword "news". Now, when I type "news" in the
address bar and hit 'enter', the Fox News site is loaded.

Close a tab
Middle-click on the tab will close it

12 Writing Tips From George Orwell

George Orwell has earned the right to be called one of the finer writers in the English language through such novels as 1984 and Animal Farm, such essays as “Shooting an Elephant,” and his memoir Down and Out in Paris.

George expressed a strong dislike of totalitarian governments in his work, but he was also passionate defender of good writing. Thus, you may want to hear some of George’s writing tips.*

A scrupulous writer, in every sentence that he writes, will ask himself at least four questions, thus:

What am I trying to say?
What words will express it?
What image or idiom will make it clearer?
Is this image fresh enough to have an effect?

And he will probably ask himself two more:

Could I put it more shortly?
Have I said anything that is avoidably ugly?

One can often be in doubt about the effect of a word or a phrase, and one needs rules that one can rely on when instinct fails. I think the following rules will cover most cases:

Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.
Never use a long word where a short one will do.
If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.
Never use the passive where you can use the active.
Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent.
Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous.

This splits the content area of the browser window as you like. It will help you in various cases. For example, to compare multiple webpages, to show a calendar always, and so on.

There is some ways to split window.

* Choose the "Split Browser to" menu in the context menu.
* Choose the "Load in Split Browser" menu in the context menu on link.
* Click popup-button on top/bottom/left/right edges of the content area.

* Drop links, bookmarks, etc. to popup-button on top/bottom/left/right edges of the content area while dragging.

You can split browsers over and over. Status of split browsers are saved, and automatically restored on the next startup.

LetterPop! is a funky little web application that allows you to use drag and drop techniques to put together very sharp email newsletters. You pick from a set of templates, and you can drag and drop photos and write text, and basically publish a newsletter in short order. You'll need to sign up for the service, which is currently in beta mode, and therefore free for a year. Once you've signed up you are permitted to upload your own photos for use in your newsletters.

Whip up a batch of business cards in a hurry at Businesscardland, then print them on your own printer.

The site provides a handful of basic templates to choose from, then lets you fill in as much personal information as you'd like (business name, phone numbers, etc.). Next, you choose from a palette of about 100 colors for the text, accents and background. The biz-card maker then produces a downloadable PDF with either a full sheet of cards for home/office printing or a single card you can give to a commercial printer.

Windows/Mac/Linux (All platforms): The Writer's Tools extension adds a useful new menu to the popular, open source office suite OpenOffice.org that bakes convenient tools like Google Translate, an online dictionary lookup tool, email backup, remote backup to an FTP server and more directly into OO.org. To install, just download the extension, then open OO.org and go to Tools -> Extension Manager and click the Add button in the My Extensions section. Then just navigate to the downloaded extension to finish the job. If you're using OO.org as your main word processor, the Writer's Tools extension is a must-have. Writer's Tools is free, works wherever OpenOffice.org does.
