Woman charged in death of eviscerated pregnant teen

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- A Pennsylvania woman has been charged in the slaying of an 18-year-old woman who was found with her uterus cut open and her fetus removed, authorities said Sunday.

Andrea Curry-Demus, 38, of Wilkinsburg was charged Sunday with criminal homicide kidnapping and unlawful restraint in connection with last week's death of Kia Johnson, Allegheny County police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said.

Police found Johnson's body in Curry-Demus' apartment Friday, two days after Curry-Demus arrived at a hospital with a newborn and falsely claimed that the baby was hers, authorities said. Police have not confirmed whether the infant belonged to Johnson, whose family reported her missing last week.

The woman's hands and feet were bound by duct tape, police said. A placenta was found at the scene, Williams told reporters.

UK PM: Iran threat to Israel 'abhorrent'

(CNN) -- British Prime Minister Gordon Brown warned that his country would back tougher sanctions against Iran over its nuclear ambitions and denounced Iranian threats against Israel as "abhorrent" in a landmark speech Monday to the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, in Jerusalem.

Brown, who is the first British premier to address the Knesset, said Tehran faced a clear choice between suspending its nuclear weapons program and international isolation, the UK Press Association reported.

"Our country will continue to lead, with the United States and our European partners, in our determination to prevent an Iranian nuclear weapons program. We stand ready to lead in taking further sanctions and will ask the whole international community to join us."

But he urged Israeli settlers to withdraw from Palestinian lands, prompting jeers from a member of the audience, and called for a lasting Middle Eastern peace settlement.

B-52 bomber crashes near Guam

(CNN) -- A U.S. Air Force B-52 with six crew members on board crashed off the island of Guam on Monday, an Air Force spokesman said.

Search crews have found no survivors, but they are still looking, said Lt. Elizabeth Buendia, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Coast Guard in Guam. They located an oil slick but have not seen any wreckage, she said.

Rescuers with the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Navy were searching a point in the Pacific Ocean about 30 miles northwest of Guam, a U.S. territory, where the plane is believed to have crashed, said Capt. Joel Stark, spokesman for Andersen Air Force Base.

He had no information on whether anyone survived.

The B-52H Stratofortress was based at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana, and was in Guam as part of a four-month rotation, Stark said.

Texas Approves a $4.93 Billion Wind-Power Project

Texas regulators have approved a $4.93 billion wind-power transmission project, providing a major lift to the development of wind energy in the state.

The planned web of transmission lines will carry electricity from remote western parts of the state to major population centers like Dallas, Houston, Austin and San Antonio. The lines can handle 18,500 megawatts of power, enough for 3.7 million homes on a hot day when air-conditioners are running.

Texas is already the largest producer of wind power, with 5,300 installed megawatts — more than double the installed capacity of California, the next closest state. And Texas is fast expanding its capacity.

The project will almost certainly face concerns from landowners reluctant to have wires cutting across their property. “I would anticipate that some of these companies will have to use eminent domain,” he said, speaking of the companies that will be building the transmission lines.

It is what is called a generation III+ reactor, and its stats are amazing.

Five percent enriched uranium oxide (far less than what is concidered weapons grade: 98%+) which is an amazing improvement to previous plants

The coolant pumps are proven designs that are used in warships for cripes sake (and they are huge and impressive).

New Levy plant gets approval

Public officials voted yesterday that a second new nuclear power plant was required in Florida.

The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) said, "Pursuing nuclear generation helps to diversify Florida's fuel supply and meet the state's growing energy needs." It approved a petition for a 'determination of need' submitted by Progress Energy.

The company is planning to build a new nuclear power plant consisting of two Westinghouse AP1000 reactor units, which would each output 1100 MWe. Progress has bought 2060 ha of greenfield land in Levy County, about 13 km from the Gulf of Mexico, and 16 km north of the existing Crystal River nuclear power plant.

It shows 16-year-old Omar Khadr being asked by Canadian officials in 2003 about events leading up to his capture by US forces, Canadian media have said. The Canadian citizen is accused of throwing a grenade that killed a US soldier in Afghanistan in 2002.

Mr Khadr, the only Westerner still held at the jail, was 15 when he was captured by US forces during a gun battle at a suspected al-Qaeda camp in Afghanistan.

But one of Mr Khadr's lawyers, Dennis Edney, said he hoped the video would cause an outcry in Canada and pressure Prime Minister Stephen Harper to demand that the US does not prosecute their client.

"I hope Canadians will be outraged to see the callous and disgraceful treatment of a Canadian youth," Mr Edney told the Toronto Star.

"Canadians should demand to know why they've been lied to."

Mr Khadr, now 21, faces multiple terrorism-related charges, the most serious of which is murder. He faces up to life in prison if convicted.

clipper's remarks: Sad. Just sad. I hate piss water beer, but the idea that a American born and raised company being sold to foreign conglomerate is just upsetting. The Busch family survived two world wars with the stigma of being German-American, and was the first beer company to deliver beer to the White House after prohibition.

Just as with oil, American dollars will be sent to line the coffers of the foreign rich. Its bad enough that the American rich screw us now, but we will eventually have to bow to our megacorp masters, regardless of their nationality.

The US brewer Anheuser-Busch has agreed to be taken over by Belgium-based InBev, in a move that will create the world's largest beer maker.

The combined company will now be called Anheuser-Busch InBev.

Anheuser makes Budweiser - the most popular beer in the US - and some US politicians had expressed anger at the prospect of a foreign takeover.

The combined business will have annual sales of $36.4bn, equivalent to 46 billion litres of beer a year.

The beer market has been rapidly consolidating in the face of cost pressures and declining sales in many mature markets.

clipper's remarks: I understand eating disorders. In fact, if I didn't watch how much I ate, I would be a whale of a man. I currently weigh about 210 pounds with about 18 percent body fat (which isn't good, but it isn't too bad either). I am just shy of six foot one. I don't feel I have to loose weight, but I know if I were to eat like i used to (pushed almost 280 @ 25 to 28 percent body fat) I would be putting my self at risk for health problems.

I guess moderation is the key. I enjoy the taste of food too much. And I eat when ever I am depressed. One of these is an emotional reaction, one that I can avoid. I guess knowing who you are helps in combating the problems.

But then again, I know a crap ton of Americans that could go without eating for a few weeks (and yes I know not eating is just as bad, its just a general statement at the situation of obesity).

Seeking 'thinspiration'

Pro-anorexia websites offering tips on extreme dieting are nothing new, but their growth on social networking sites is a disturbing new twist and brings them within reach of a wider audience

As a conversation opener, it's as blatant as it is troubling.

Many girls in these groups, aged from about 15 to 30, claim their goal weight is below seven stone (45kg), and for some it is as low as five stone (32kg).

"We always want to be the thinnest," Andrea says. "'Thinner is the winner', that's a quote that we live by."

Dr John Morgan, a consultant psychiatrist St George's University Hospital, London, who specialises in eating disorders, says these groups run the risk of glamorising unhealthy behaviour.

But the impact of these groups is not entirely negative - and if properly regulated, they can be used for positive means. He says they can mirror group therapy, an important part of treatment, and help draw people out of their isolation.

Robot vehicles take on tough jobs

Scientists are focused on developing unmanned machines that can operate in the air, on the ground and under water, doing jobs where deploying people is just too dangerous.

Some are already in use, such as the unmanned drones which fly over Iraq and Afghanistan carrying out reconnaissance for soldiers on the ground, or bomb disposal robots which disable deadly explosive devices.

Some of the latest advances have been on show at the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) conference in Washington DC.

USAF seeks control of aerial kill-bots

Everyone knows about the current rise of the aerial killer robot. These machines are now in operation across the US military, and have already reaped a deadly harvest in Southwest Asia.

But the big deathbot battle isn't, in fact, in Iraq of Afghanistan; it's between the various branches of the US armed services, regarding who will be in charge of all the new flying slaughter machines and spy-eyes.

The United States Air Force (USAF) has been engaged for at least two years now in an attempt to seize control of almost all US military drones and flying kill-bots. The USAF was arguably left at the starting line in this rapidly-growing death-tech arena, perhaps due to the natural reluctance of human pilots to see their jobs automated out of existence.

US and UK: Close but not quite as close

For those who wanted Gordon Brown to make a clean break from the Tony Blair years, the new British prime minister's first meeting with President Bush might have been a disappointment.

Subtle differences

Then there were the words. Gordon Brown called the talks "full and frank", usually a phrase reserved for rather tense exchanges.

President Bush's language was, as always, full of phrases like "the war against extremists and radicals" in Iraq and around the world

He called Afghanistan the "front line against terrorism," an honour normally assigned by Mr Bush to Iraq.

Pressure on Iran

That would indeed be a test to see if the US and UK stayed together.

Teachers drop the Holocaust to avoid offending Muslims

Schools are dropping the Holocaust from history lessons to avoid offending Muslim pupils, a Governmentbacked study has revealed.

It found some teachers are reluctant to cover the atrocity for fear of upsetting students whose beliefs include Holocaust denial.

There is also resistance to tackling the 11th century Crusades - where Christians fought Muslim armies for control of Jerusalem - because lessons often contradict what is taught in local mosques.

The findings have prompted claims that some schools are using history 'as a vehicle for promoting political correctness'.

It found some teachers are dropping courses covering the Holocaust at the earliest opportunity over fears Muslim pupils might express anti-Semitic and anti-Israel reactions in class.

UN backs new Darfur peace force

The United Nations Security Council has voted to send peacekeepers to the war-ravaged Darfur region of Sudan, after months of wrangling

Up to 26,000 troops and police will make up the world's largest peacekeeping force, under a joint UN and African Union mandate.

The resolution will allow peacekeepers to use force to defend civilians and aid workers in Darfur from attack.

At least 200,000 people are thought to have died in the region since 2003.

clipper's remarks: Okay, I can understand what they are worried about, geographical isolation of gene pools can be bad. But isn't that how diversity originated? Is that not what caused evolution of various species (if you happen to believe in evolution)?

Damage the environment and harm wildlife... unfortunately a lot of Americans view the immigrants as wildlife.

I am all for "tracked immigration." Each Mexican stopping by an office on the way in and being assigned a work control number (for tracking, taxes, social security... similar to a SSN), or registering as a prospective citizen. Let them in, let them work legally, let them pay taxes like the rest of us proles.

It doesn't matter where your from nor the color of your skin, we are all proles in the end.

US border fences 'an eco-danger'

Mexico has urged the US to alter its plans for expanded fences along their shared border, saying they would damage the environment and harm wildlife

A report prepared for the Mexican government by experts and environmental activists from Mexico and the US said the barriers could isolate border animals into smaller groups, affecting their genetic diversity

These include jaguars, Mexican black bears and the endangered antelope-like Sonora Pronghorn

The use of intense lights and radar could also affect nocturnal species, they said

Another proposal was "live" fences of cactuses, or permeable barriers to allow water, insects and pollen to cross the border
