Gil Elvgren - The Classic American Pin Up Girl

Recent auction records show some of Elvgren's work still being sold for over $200,000. It's a sign of how important his artwork still remains today.

From the mid 1930's through 1972, Elvgren produced over five hundred paintings of beautiful girls and women and almost all of them were made with oil on canvas

77 story, 1.6 million square foot (150,000 sq m) project includes luxury retail spaces, lush gardens and terraces, restaurants, cafes, 200 homes, a boutique hotel, and a multi-level Skybar and restaurant with 360° views of the city.

A band of shifted, box-like elements breaks up the surface and creates terraces and balconies. The tower’s "pixels" have been designed to maximize unobstructed panoramas for the residences, offering unparalleled views of the city.

Eclipse of the Century Live Online Tonight

The century’s most dramatic solar eclipse will be visible along a narrow swath of Asia and the Pacific Ocean later today. And, thanks to some University of North Dakota researchers, it’ll be visible on the internet, too. The live webcast begins at 5:15 p.m. Pacific time.

The eclipse will last six minutes and 39 seconds, which is near the theoretical maximum duration for a solar eclipse of seven minutes and 31 seconds. For everyone except Ray Kurzweil and the other singulatarians, this will be the longest eclipse of our lifetimes. The Earth won’t see an eclipse this long until June 13, 2132.

If you’re lucky enough to be near the path of the eclipse, check out our guide to the experience, How to See 93 Million Miles. Or perhaps use it to start planning a trip for next July to the Cook Islands or French Polynesia, where you’ll be able to see the next total solar eclipse on July 11, 2010.

Four pints 'increase health risk'

Men who drink four pints of beer a week could be increasing the risk of needing hospital treatment during their lifetime, a study has suggested.

Researchers studied 5,772 Scottish men for up to 35 years.

They found those who drank between eight and 14 units a week were more likely to be admitted to hospital than those who drank fewer units or nothing.

That is the equivalent of four pints of beer, eight shots of spirits or eight small glasses of wine.

The men, from Glasgow, Clydebank and Grangemouth, were all aged between 35 to 64 when they were recruited between 1970 and 1973.

The risk rose again for men who drank between 14 and 21 units, which is the government's recommended weekly maximum.

The report found that as average alcohol intake increased, the risk of being admitted to hospital and the length of stay also rose.

Honeybee mobs overpower hornets

Honeybee hordes use two weapons - heat and carbon dioxide - to kill their natural enemies, giant hornets.

Japanese honeybees form "bee balls" - mobbing and smothering the predators.

This has previously been referred to as "heat-balling", but a study has now shown that carbon dioxide also plays a role in its lethal effectiveness.

In the journal Naturwissenschaften, the scientists describe how hornets are killed within 10 minutes when they are trapped inside a ball of bees.

Japanese giant hornets, which can be up to 5cm long, are voracious predators that can devastate bees' nests and consume their larvae.

But, if the bees spot their attacker in time, they mount a powerful defence in the form of a bee ball. This study found that the heat inside the bee ball alone was not enough to reliably kill the hornets.

Australia probes navy 'sex game'

An investigation is under way in Australia over claims that navy sailors competed with each other to bed their female colleagues for cash prizes.

According to Channel Seven news, sailors on board HMAS Success put a cash value on each woman's head.

Sleeping with a female officer or a lesbian, or having sex in a strange place, won more money, the report said.

Sex on a pool table or with a lesbian reportedly scored higher points.

The "veracity of any allegations" had yet to be confirmed

Iran clerics defy election ruling

A group of clerics in Iran has called Iran's presidential vote invalid, contradicting official results.

The pro-reform group's statement pits it against the top legislative body, which last week formally endorsed the re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The pro-reform clerics group said in a statement that the top legislative body, the Guardian Council, no longer had the right "to judge in this case."

In a statement to the press, the Assembly of Qom Seminary Scholars and Researchers said some members of the Guardian Council had "lost their impartial image in the eyes of the public."

The Guardian Council is an unelected 12-member council made up of six religious leaders, appointed by the supreme leader, and six jurists.

The statement is further proof of a split at the top of Iran's establishment

nobody with a "vigilant conscience" could be satisfied with the current situation
