House apologizes for slavery, 'Jim Crow' injustices

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a resolution apologizing to African-Americans for slavery and the era of Jim Crow.

The nonbinding resolution, which passed on a voice vote, was introduced by Rep. Steve Cohen, a white lawmaker who represents a majority black district in Memphis, Tennessee.

While many states have apologized for slavery, it is the first time a branch of the federal government has done so, an aide to Cohen said.

In passing the resolution, the House also acknowledged the "injustice, cruelty, brutality and inhumanity of slavery and Jim Crow."

The name "Jim Crow" came from a character played by T.D. "Daddy" Rice who portrayed a slave while in blackface during the mid-1800s.

The House also committed itself to stopping "the occurrence of human rights violations in the future."

U.S. backs $30 million to build plug-in hybrids

The Department of Energy announced a $30 million effort Thursday with Ford, General Motors, and General Electric to bring to market by 2014 plug-in hybrid electric cars that drive 40 miles on a single charge.

"The projects announced today demonstrate a shared public-private sector commitment to advance clean vehicle technologies and will help reduce our dependence on foreign oil while also confronting the serious challenge of global climate change," Andy Karsner, assistant secretary of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, said in a statement. He made the announcement Thursday at a conference on plug-in electric vehicles sponsored by the Brookings Institution and Google.org.

Also part of the government's project, General Electric is partnering with Chrysler to develop a dual-battery system enabling a vehicle to travel 40 miles on an electric charge.

Two weeks ago at RedState, we documented Obama’s 1996 endorsement by the New Party. A review of the New Party establishes that not only was the party an amalgamation of far left groups, but Barack Obama knew that when he sought the party’s endorsement.

Most of the New Party’s history has been lost in the digital age. It was established in 1992 and started to die out in 1998, well before Google and the modern web were established. But through lengthy searches of the Nexis archive and microfilm at the local university library, I’ve been able to piece this together.

The New Party was established in 1992 “by union activist Sandy Pope and University of Wisconsin professor Joel Rogers,” USA Today reported on November 16, 1992. The paper wrote that the new party was “self-described [as] ‘socialist democratic.’”

Seattle man has donated 30 gallons of blood

SEATTLE -- A Seattle man who has donated more than 30 gallons of blood in his lifetime will cut the ribbon when the Puget Sound Blood Center opens a new donor center on Thursday in Federal Way.

The 53-year-old, John Filicetti (fil-ee-CHET'-ee), has been a blood donor since he was 16 and became a frequent donor after his son was diagnosed with hemophilia.

The Federal Way center joins ten other centers operated by the Puget Sound Blood Center in Western Washington. It supplies blood to more than 70 hospitals and clinics.

USS Nimitz Forced Iran's Decision

WASHINGTON -- The announcement Wednesday by Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that his government would release the 15 captured British sailors and marines came after an intense and often bitter internal debate, sources in Tehran told NewsMax.

The capture of the British naval inspection team was clearly a coordinated effort by the Iranian government aimed at demonstrating Iran's ability to confront the U.S.-led multinational forces in Iraq and to divert international attention from the nuclear showdown. The decision to release the hostages showed the limits of Iran's power and the fears of some leaders that too much provocation could backfire.

Unless Iran already has nuclear warheads, a direct military confrontation with the United States would most likely provoke a popular uprising against the regime. And retaining power is the one thing that Ayatollah Khamenei and his clerical cohorts actually care about.

Despite Kanye West’s involvement with Red and Six Degrees, he loses points big time for this little stunt. According to ABC News, West ordered takeout on Sunday from an Indian restaurant in Wales and will have it delivered to New York on Wednesday for a meeting with 7 people.

Not only will the meal of onion bhajees, chapati breads, biryanis, pappadums, fish and veggies need to be prepared, shrink-wrapped and packed in dry ice to preserve freshness, but Kaysor Ahmed, head chef from the restaurant, will be helicoptered from Wales to London where he’ll catch a direct flight to New York to oversee the transport and delivery of the meal.

And the cost for Kanye’s indulgence? $3900 not including the cost of travel and accomodation for the head chef and DEFINITELY NOT including the costs of carbon emissions, energy and resource usage and the loss of respect of ecorazzi and eco-conscious fans everwhere.

Senator John McCain made it official that he is seeking the 2008 Republican presidential nomination and said he plans a formal announcement in April.

The Arizona Republican, surprising few Americans, made the announcement during an interview on CBS's Late Show with David Letterman which was taped for broadcast.

"I am announcing that I will be a candidate for President of the United States," McCain told Letterman.

McCain said he would make a formal announcement in April.

A new ABC News/Washington Post poll shows Giuliani holding a two-to-one advantage over McCain among Republicans nationally.

McCain, who turns 72 in August 2008, is a former Vietnam prisoner of war who stresses his experience in foreign policy and military affairs.

Putin accuses U.S. of inciting arms race

MUNICH, Germany — Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday blamed U.S. policy for inciting other countries to seek nuclear weapons to defend themselves from an "almost uncontained use of military force" — a stinging attack that underscored growing tensions between Washington and Moscow.

"Unilateral, illegitimate actions have not solved a single problem, they have become a hotbed of further conflicts," Putin said at a security forum attracting senior officials from around the world.

"One state, the United States, has overstepped its national borders in every way."

The Bush administration said it was "surprised and disappointed" by Putin's remarks. "His accusations are wrong," said Gordon Johndroe, Bush's national security spokesman.

In what the Russian leader's spokesman acknowledged was his harshest criticism of the United States, Putin attacked Bush's administration for stoking a new arms race by planning to deploy a missile defense system in eastern Europe and for backing a U.N. plan that would grant virtual independence to Serbia's breakaway province of Kosovo.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who was also attending the conference, described Putin's remarks as "the most aggressive speech from a Russian leader since the end of the Cold War."

The United States and an increasingly assertive Russia repeatedly have butted heads during the past year, with Vice President Dick Cheney accusing Moscow of using its energy resources as "tools of intimidation or blackmail." Washington also has been angered by Russia's reluctance to impose meaningful sanctions against Iran, which is accused of seeking to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian atomic energy program.

But Putin said it was "the almost uncontained hyper use of force in international relations" that was forcing countries opposed to Washington to seek to build up nuclear arsenals.
