US kills 'senior Baghdad bomber'

A man said to be the planner of series of deadly al-Qaeda attacks in Iraq has been killed, the US military says.

Mahir al-Zubaydi, also known as Abu Assad or Abu Rami, was said to head the group behind bombings which killed at least 16 people in Baghdad this week.

US officials described him as the al-Qaeda military commander for the whole of Baghdad east of the Tigris river.

They say he played a key role in planning some of the worst atrocities in Iraq over the past few years.

Zubaydi also took part in the videotaped killing of four Russian diplomats in June 2006, officials say.

"His removal from the AQI [al-Qaeda Iraq] network will send shockwaves through Baghdad's terrorist bombing networks," a US spokesman told the Associated Press.

The spokesman said the organisation, which has seen a drop in support as Sunni Muslim Awakening Councils have collaborated with the US to curb violence, would now have even greater difficulty recruiting new members.

Terror suspects held on KLM plane

Police in Germany have arrested two terrorism suspects on a plane preparing to take off from Cologne-Bonn airport.

The two men, both in their early 20s and of Somali origin, were under surveillance for months, police say.

They were said to be "possibly planning attacks" and had left suicide notes at their flats expressing their wish to die in a "holy war".

The KLM airliner, which was bound for Amsterdam, was eventually allowed to take off after a luggage search.

Police boarded flight KL1804 at 0655 (0455 GMT), police spokesman Frank Scheulen said.

He said the suspects - a 23-year-old Somali and a 24-year-old Somali-born German citizen - were "under suspicion of participating in a jihad [holy war] action and of possibly planning attacks".

Germany's federal crime office said on Thursday it was hunting for two Islamic militants believed to be on their way to Germany.

The arrests in Cologne are thought to be unconnected with that terror alert.

Canadian guilty in plot to behead prime minister

BRAMPTON, Ontario (AP) — A Canadian man accused of participating in military exercises and firearms training as part of a group authorities say plotted to storm Parliament and behead the prime minister was found guilty Thursday.

The man's attorney says the plot was a "jihadi fantasy" and that his client knew nothing about it.

A judge ruled Thursday that evidence of a terrorist group was "overwhelming." The man is the first person to be found guilty of a terrorist offense in Canada since the country enacted anti-terrorism laws in 2001.

The arrests of the 18 group members, known as the "Toronto 18," made headlines around the world and heightened fears in Canada, where people believe they are relatively immune from terrorist strikes.

Prosecutors said there were plans to truck-bomb nuclear power plants and a building housing Canada's spy service.

The man has not been identified because he was 17, a legal minor, when he was arrested in 2006.

After two major terrorist attacks in Pakistan and Yemen — along with a new U.S. push at insurgent strongholds along the Afghan border — U.S. intelligence is worried about a massive "October surprise" attack geared to sway the U.S. elections.

America's military and intelligence agencies intercepted a series of messages from al-Qaida's leadership last month that seemed designed to warn local cells to prepare for imminent attacks. One such operation may have been the attack that brought down a Marriott Hotel in Islamabad where the newly inaugurated president of Pakistan was scheduled to dine.

Other intelligence experts agreed, adding that a pre-election attack would probably occur overseas.

But al-Qaida’s ultimate goal is to launch another major attack on the U.S. homeland — preferably with nuclear or biological weapons. Whether that hurts the Republican or Democrats seems beside the point, according to one expert.

It appeared to be a message sent from Hell. The massive blast was heard 15 kilometres away.

Eyewitnesses have told the BBC that a vehicle crashed through the security barriers in front of the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad.

The 290-room building was the scene of total carnage as the blast ripped into its facade, destroying everything in its path.

I have seen bomb wreckage in many places in Pakistan, but I have never seen anything on this scale.

Even half a kilometre away, you find yourself treading on bits of the building and pieces of trees.

A film of glass, metal, broken branches and oil covered the road as I walked up to the hotel.

Last May, the top commander of the Pakistan Taleban, Baitullah Mahsud, had this to say when he spoke to the BBC: "We do not expect the new government to change anything. But we will fight it, every way we can and if we are not safe in our homes, neither will they be."

Italy holds five on terror charge

Five North Africans have been arrested in Italy on charges of conspiring to commit acts of international terrorism.

Police in Bologna say they arrested four Tunisians and a Moroccan and are seeking a sixth man.

They are investigating an alleged international terrorist ring, which they say recruited suicide bombers for Iraq and Afghanistan.

The North Africans are also charged with fraud. They are alleged to have collected money from phoney car accident insurance claims to finance their operations.

They recruited and trained people willing to sacrifice their lives in terrorist attacks in war zones, the police said.

The alleged leader of the terrorist ring was a former mujahideen colonel, of unknown nationality, who had fought in Bosnia during the Balkan wars of the 1990s.

Investigators had gathered information on the activities of the terrorist group through phone taps.

British Muslims aid Taliban in attacks on UK soldiers in Afghanistan

British Muslims are actively supporting the Taliban and al Qaida in attacks on UK soldiers, the former commander of Britain’s forces in Afghanistan said today.

Earlier this year suspicions were raised that the Taliban were recruiting an increasing number of fighters from Britain after RAF experts overheard secret transmissions spoken in broad Midlands and Yorkshire accents.

At the end of the week that saw the toll of British soldiers killed in Afghanistan reach 114, Brig Butler said a growing number of British-born Muslims were assisting the Taliban.

He said: “There are British passport holders who live in the UK who are being found in places like Kandahar.

In the last two months 17 British soldiers have been killed in the country but politicians and commanders alike agree that there can be no early exit for UK forces.

China police call assault "suspected terrorist attack"

BEIJING (Reuters) - Assailants killed 16 Chinese police in the restive Xinjiang region on Monday, the official Xinhua news agency said, in just the sort of violence Beijing had hoped to prevent four days before the start of the Olympics.

The unidentified attackers drove up in two vehicles and tossed grenades into a border station of the far western region near the Old Silk Road city of Kashgar, Xinhua reported.

Sixteen policemen were also hurt.

Under heavy security scrutiny in the run-up to the August 8-24 Games, Xinjiang is home to some 8 million Muslim, Turkic-speaking Uighurs, many of them resentful of Chinese controls on religion and the big ethnic Han Chinese presence.

China accuses militant Uighurs of working with al Qaeda to bring about an independent state called East Turkestan, and says it has foiled terror plots there targeting the Games.

Israelis hit by new digger attack

A Palestinian in a mechanical digger has rammed traffic in west Jerusalem, injuring at least 10 people before being shot dead, Israeli police say.

A bus and a number of cars were hit during the incident. Some cars were crushed and one was turned on its roof.

Witnesses say an armed civilian first shot at the driver, before he was killed by border police.

Three weeks ago a Palestinian man went on a deadly rampage in a heavy vehicle in Jerusalem, killing three Israelis.

Police said the driver was from a Palestinian village in the occupied West Bank which Israel has designated part of the enlarged Jerusalem municipality.

Mr Abbas told reporters he "condemned and rejected" the attack and said such incidents "hurt our reputation and peace in general".

It was the first time a Palestinian Authority president had visited the Israeli presidential residence, known as Beit Hanasi.

Driver Rams Earthmover Into Jerusalem Bus

JERUSALEM, July 2 -- A Palestinian construction worker used an earthmover to ram and overturn a bus in downtown Jerusalem on Wednesday, killing at least three people and wounding 40 during a rampage attack on cars and pedestrians along the crowded Jaffa Road.

The driver was shot and killed by a police officer who managed to climb on top of the cab of the machine, but not before the driver created a chaotic midday scene on one of the city's main thoroughfares as he destroyed vehicles across an estimated four hundred yards.

The death toll may rise as police untangle the wreckage from the attack and the wounded are treated at local hospitals. Some of the wounded were seriously hurt.

The armed Palestinian group Islamic Jihad blessed the attack, but no group had claimed responsibility for it as of late Wednesday afternoon.

Afterward, the bus lay on its side, its windows shattered, with children's toys and blankets littering the inside.

WASHINGTON (AP) — An international smuggling ring may have secretly shared blueprints for an advanced nuclear weapon with Iran, North Korea and other rogue countries, The Washington Post reported Sunday.

The now-defunct ring led by Pakistani scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan is previously known to have sold bomb-related parts to Libya, Iran and North Korea. A draft report by former top U.N. arms inspector David Albright says the smugglers also acquired designs for building a more sophisticated compact nuclear device that could be fitted on a type of ballistic missile used by Iran and other developing countries, according to the Post.

"These advanced nuclear weapons designs may have long ago been sold off to some of the most treacherous regimes in the world," Albright wrote in the draft report, which was expected to be published later this week, the Post reported.

That’s the chilling word from Beirut-based Ed Blanche, who writes in The Middle East magazine that Egyptian-born chemical engineer Midhat Mursi al Sayyid Umar — known as Osama bin Laden’s “sorcerer” — is working in secret laboratories in Pakistan’s northwestern tribal area.

A plot to launch an attack with cyanide gas in the New York City subway system was reportedly scheduled for the spring of 2003. The plot was first disclosed in 2006 in a book, “The One Percent Doctrine” by Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Ron Suskind, which was excerpted by Time magazine.

A dangerous al-Qaida bomb-maker, whom the Pakistan military reported was killed two years ago, is in fact alive and well and working to develop chemical, biological, and radiological weapons — and perhaps nuclear weapons as well.

RAMALLAH, West Bank - In his latest message, Osama bin Laden portrays himself as the only true defender of the Palestinians. But the Palestinians, even the Islamic militants of Hamas, didn't seem too enthusiastic Monday over the bear hug from the fugitive al-Qaida leader.

The moderate Palestinian government in the West Bank fears its quest for independence could be sullied by perceived links to terrorism. Even the rival Hamas regime in Gaza, labeled a terrorist group by the U.S. and Israel, sees al-Qaida as too extreme.

"Al-Qaida and bin Laden have caused huge damage to the image of Muslims and Arabs all over the world, and with his frequent statements about the Palestinians he just damages our image," said Nimr Hamad, an adviser to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

FBI agents are working through tons of tips they received after releasing a photo of two men who they say were acting suspiciously aboard Washington state ferries.

Publicizing the photo of men who haven’t been accused of a crime was an unusual move by the FBI. Officials with the Bureau say they just want to talk to the two men.

The State Patrol says investigators started by showing the pictures to ferry workers, Then they showed them at a fire and police training exercise.

With no new leads, they decided to get all the ferry riders involved by publicizing the photos and asking, “do you know who these men are?”

(CNN) -- Fred Thompson, the all-but-announced Republican presidential candidate, suggested Tuesday that the nation was in denial when it comes to the threat of terrorism.

"I don't think that yet as a nation we have come to terms with the nature and the extent of the threat facing this country," Thompson said while addressing the annual convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Kansas City, Missouri.

Calling terrorism "a global threat" to the United States, Thompson pointed out that he thought the United States was at a crossroads and told the veterans "it's time that we had a frank discussion in this country at the highest levels with both parties as to what it's going to take and the unity we're going to need" to battle terror.
