Obama blasts rapper Ludacris' rhymes

CHICAGO - Rapper Ludacris is a strong supporter of Barack Obama but the Democrat's presidential campaign is calling one of the artist's latest rhymes "outrageously offensive" to Sen. Hillary Clinton, Republican Sen. John McCain and President Bush.

The song that brags an Obama presidency is destiny uses an expletive to describe Clinton, calls Bush "mentally handicapped" and says McCain doesn't belong in "any chair unless he's paralyzed."

The lyrics also don't spare the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who recently apologized for crude comments he made about Obama. "If you said it then you meant it," intones the rapper, whose real name is Chris Bridges.

The Obama campaign on Wednesday blasted Bridges' "Politics As Usual" song, which is on the "Gangsta Grillz: The Preview" mixtape with Atlanta spinner DJ Drama.

In the two-minute track, Bridges makes a pitch for Obama to name him vice president, rhyming "Hillary hated on you, so that (expletive) is irrelevant."

George Orwell once wrote that politics was closely related to social identity. 'One sometimes gets the impression,' he wrote in The Road To Wigan Pier, 'that the mere words socialism and communism draw towards them with magnetic force every fruit-juice drinker, nudist, sandal-wearer, sex-maniac, Quaker, nature-cure quack, pacifist and feminist in England'.

Orwell was making an observation. But today a whole body of academic research shows he was correct: your politics influence the manner in which you live your life. And the news is not so good for those on the political Left.

There is plenty of data that shows that Right-wingers are happier, more generous to charities, less likely to commit suicide - and even hug their children more than those on the Left.

Much of this springs from the destructive influence of modern liberal ideas.

Is Europe moving right? Is the democratic left in trouble?

The decisive victory of Nicolas Sarkozy over Socialist S?gol?ne Royal in France's presidential election on Sunday was the most recent example of the battering that moderate-left parties are taking from the forces of globalization and discontent over immigration.

Nonetheless, the social democratic and liberal left faces a big problem because globalization makes the movement's core pledge -- to produce economic growth that lifts up the poor and the middle class as well as the rich -- far more problematic.

With their European friends in some trouble, American progressives may have both the opportunity and the obligation to find the new formulas.

PARIS — After 12 years as head of state and 40 years in politics, Jacques Chirac announced his departure from public office Sunday, leaving as the most unpopular French President in the history of the Fifth Republic.

A recent poll showed that he would have won an embarrassing 5 per cent of the vote if he had decided to run again in next month's election. Observers had started to remark on his mental “absence” while attending to government business, and a board game that lampooned allegations that he was involved in a corruption scandal while he was mayor of Paris was a popular gift at Christmas.

But some say he's already done too much. “I think we've had enough of Mr. Chirac,” said Paula Rappeneau, 69, a retired civil servant from Paris. “We need modern ideas and he doesn't have any.”

Senator John McCain made it official that he is seeking the 2008 Republican presidential nomination and said he plans a formal announcement in April.

The Arizona Republican, surprising few Americans, made the announcement during an interview on CBS's Late Show with David Letterman which was taped for broadcast.

"I am announcing that I will be a candidate for President of the United States," McCain told Letterman.

McCain said he would make a formal announcement in April.

A new ABC News/Washington Post poll shows Giuliani holding a two-to-one advantage over McCain among Republicans nationally.

McCain, who turns 72 in August 2008, is a former Vietnam prisoner of war who stresses his experience in foreign policy and military affairs.

WASHINGTON -- Democrats took control of both the House and Senate today for the first time in the presidency of Republican George W. Bush — and promptly embraced at least some of the trappings of bipartisanship.

The House made history by electing Rep. Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco as its first female speaker, putting her behind Vice President Dick Cheney in the line of succession to the presidency.

Pelosi will lead the 233 Democrats who were elected to the House Nov. 7. The defeated Republican candidate for speaker, John Boehner of Ohio, will lead the 202 Republicans.

Pelosi, who was unanimously selected by Democrats to become the first female House speaker in history, had endorsed Rep. Jack Murtha of Pennsylvania for the majority leader. House Democrats had other ideas, voting 149-86 in a closed-door session to solidly back Hoyer, 67, who has served as Pelosi's deputy in the Democratic leadership since 2002.

SHOW LOW, Ariz. — Political parties are like cowboy boots in many parts of the West. If one pair doesn’t fit, you try on another.

Hal F. Butler is old enough to remember when the boots here in Navajo County were overwhelmingly filled by Republicans, and then, beginning in the late 1940’s, how the county turned Democratic. Mr. Butler became a Democrat in the 1950’s at the urging of his mother, a staunch Republican who said the Democratic Party was the party of the future for an ambitious young man.

“The independent vote is swinging everything,” he said. “They’re going to be the powerhouse.”

LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Tony Blair launched a withering attack on Thursday on what he called "mad anti-Americanism" among European politicians.

Blair, U.S. President George W. Bush's closest ally in the so-called war on terror, said the world urgently needs the United States to help tackle the globe's most pressing problems.

"The strain of, frankly, anti-American feeling in parts of European politics is madness when set against the long-term interests of the world we believe in," he said.

Responding to those who have criticized the White House, Blair said in his pamphlet: "The danger with America today is not that they are too much involved."

"We want them engaged. The reality is that none of the problems that press in on us can be resolved or even contemplated without them," he added.

Laying out his vision for countering extremists, he said: "We need to construct an alliance of moderation that paints a future in which Muslim, Jew and Christian, Arab and Western, wealthy and developing nations can make progress in peace and harmony with each other."

Yahoo has been cited in a Chinese court decision to jail a dissident internet writer for 10 years for subversion in 2003 -- the fourth such case to surface implicating the U.S. Internet giant.

Wang Xiaoning, born in 1951, was convicted of the charge of "incitement to subvert state power" after e-mailing electronic journals advocating a multi-party system, the New York-based watchdog Human Rights in China (HRIC) said in a statement.
