LONDON (Reuters) - Nine albums from the late George Harrison have been made available online through retailers such as Apple's iTunes, record label Parlophone said on Wednesday, as the fourth and final member of the Beatles finally went digital.

As a group, the Beatles have been among the highest-profile holdouts to putting music online but a recent settlement to a lengthy trademark dispute between Apple and the Beatles' company, Apple Corps Ltd, is seen as finally clearing the way.

Parlophone, part of the EMI music group, said nine albums including "All Things Must Pass," were now available from all digital service providers and said more would follow online in the new year.

The announcement means that the solo catalogues of all four Beatles are now available digitally.

Starbucks to go 'all-McCartney' on June 5

If you can't stand Paul McCartney music, you don't want to go into a Starbucks on June 5.

That's the day the Seattle coffee giant (NASDAQ: SBUX) will launch McCartney's first album recorded on Starbucks' Hear Music label, called "Memory Almost Full."

The album will be played in all Starbucks stores, all day, all over the world, Starbucks officials said.

"Customers from Taipei to Topeka have the opportunity to experience this extraordinary album all within a span of 24 hours," said Ken Lombard, who is president of Starbucks Entertainment and runs Hear Music, in a statement.

In March, Starbucks Corp. announced that former Beatle McCartney would be the first musician signed for Los Angeles-based Hear Music.

The Fab Four's catalog long ago went the way of the 1 and the 0, but nothing could be less digital than the way the Beatles' music was recorded.

Today, effects like delay are easily achieved with off-the-shelf equipment costing a few hundred dollars at most. At the legendary Abbey Road studio, where many of these effects were pioneered, armies of technicians used enormous rooms to literally bounce the sound off walls.

Such analog feats make for a fascinating and timely tale in the hands of Kevin Ryan and Brian Kehew, whose deeply researched and timely self-published book Recording the Beatles, shows with painstaking clarity how recording engineers not only captured the band on tape, but augmented its musical palette in ways still emulated around the world. The book, first published in September by Curvebender Publishing, was an instant hit among Beatles fans and music geeks and has just gone into its second printing after the initial imprint of 3,000 copies sold out.

Weighing in at 540 pages, this exhaustive and authoritative retrospective of The Beatles' recording methods couldn't be timelier. The band's label, Apple Corps., is reportedly on the verge of licensing the Beatles catalog to online music stores for the first time, which could mark the second remastering of the Beatles catalog for a digital format since it happened for the CD in 1987.

The result is a sometimes overwhelming look at everything that went into Recording The Beatles -- or at least as much as is possible to document in 10 years of research and writing.

The engineers played Lennon's vocal track at 15 inches per second, routing the signal to a second tape deck which recorded it at 30 ips. The other part of the trick is that the second deck had twice the space between the Record head and the Play head as the first, so Lennon's voice arrived at the Play heads of both machines at approximately -- but not exactly -- the same time.

CUPERTINO, Calif. (AP) -- IPod maker Apple and the guardian of The Beatles' music resolved their long-simmering dispute on Monday about who has the right to the Apple trademark.

The settlement between Apple Inc. and Apple Corps offered greater hope to fans of George, Paul, John and Ringo that the two sides could now focus on permitting downloads of the band's music through the computer company's iTunes Music Store. The catalog of all Beatles songs, including "Let it Be," "Get Back" and "She Loves You," is the largest holdout from iTunes and other online services.

The two Apples have been exchanging legal salvos for 20 years over their names and fruity logos. The last skirmish came in May, when a British judge ruled that iTunes did not violate a 1991 agreement stipulating that the computer maker could keep doing business if it didn't enter the music business. An appeal had been scheduled for this month.

The new settlement replaces the 1991 agreement and gives Apple Inc. ownership of all the trademarks related to "Apple," meaning it could continue using its name and logos in iTunes. In addition, Apple Inc. will license certain of those trademarks back to Apple Corps for their continued use.

Each side agreed to pay its own legal costs to end the trademark lawsuit. Further terms weren't disclosed.

"We love the Beatles, and it has been painful being at odds with them over these trademarks," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "It feels great to resolve this in a positive manner, and in a way that should remove the potential of further disagreements in the future."

Neil Aspinall, manager of Apple Corps, said the company was glad to resolve the dispute.

The Beatles, who were one of the last bands to embrace CDs, haven't allowed any online service to sell their music. Currently, the only Beatles songs for sale on iTunes are covers and tributes, and the only legal way of getting the band's tunes onto iPods is to buy a CD and make a digital copy from that.

BEIJING/MOSCOW, Jan 11 (Reuters Life!) - Complaints from the Chinese embassy in Moscow forced an advertising agency to scrap a chewing gum commercial playing on Russian television which featured China's national anthem as backing music.

China's People's Daily newspaper said the commercial for chewing gum produced by Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. using the "March of the Volunteers" had "harmed the dignity of China."

Igor Kirkchi, general director of BBDO, an advertising subsidiary of Omnigroup in Moscow, which designed the advert said it was immediately withdrawn after complaints from the Chinese.

"It was a monstrous misunderstanding," he said.

"We bought the music and the rights to use it in an ad from an English company owning banks of music tracks intended for commercial purposes. It was impossible to determine that it was the Chinese national anthem by the name of the track."

RIAA to AllofMP3: You Owe Us $1.65 Trillion

Bloodsucking record labels and their lapdog the RIAA have filed suit in New York federal court against Russian music downloading site Allof MP3.com, seeking $1.65 trillion. That's $150,000 for each song that was downloaded from the site from June to October of last year. The undaunted AllofMP3.com responds, pretty much saying, "Tough shit, you're filing a suit in New York and we're in Russia. Nya nya nya nya nya nya."

Meanwhile, the site is still up and running, gleefully noting that iTunes revenues have decreased by 65% and wishing all a Happy New Year. Beatles songs, DRM-free, for $.17 each? Sounds like a good deal. – Charlie White

Synthetic Orchestras Not As Good As The Real Thing, But May Be Close Enough

There have been numerous instances of machines replacing humans to perform some tasks, though traditionally this phenomenon is associated with repetitive, unskilled labor that can be easily automated. More recently computers and robots have started moving into more professional areas associated with higher skill, like surgery. Increasingly, computers and synthesizers are able to replace whole orchestras, producing sound that's impressively close to the real thing. This has caused some concern for trained musicians, worried that their skills will no longer be in demand, and in one case, a few years ago, it resulted in a formal complaint from a New York musician's union. The fact that a machine can do what they do with some degree of success raises the disturbing idea that a trained musician (one who reads sheet music, and then plays it back) is actually more like a technician than an artist. Many musicians will insist that a computerized system will never achieve the texture and beauty of a live orchestra performance. That may be true for some time, and top operas will continue to use live musicians. But more importantly, synthetic orchestras will enable many more productions that would have never been able to happen, because companies will have access to something that's close enough to the real thing at a tiny fraction of the price. And such a scenario, that sees more musical productions, and greater access to them, should be a positive for those involved with the industry, as long as they're prepared to adapt.

Beatles set to go digital

EMI, which has made a fortune from the Beatles since the band burst onto the music scene with Love Me Do in 1962, is coy about the details. But the music group has dropped the first hint that the catalogue of songs will be made available on the internet.

David Munns, head of EMI’s North American division, told a web-industry conference in San Francisco that the Beatles’ music would be available for download “soon”.

A new Beatles album, Love, which presents new versions of many of the band’s classic tracks, will be released this month.

Hacker to license code that unlocks iTunes restrictions

Hacker Jon Lech Johansen, who became known for cracking the copy-protection technology in DVDs, now claims to have unlocked the playback restrictions of Apple iPod and iTunes music products and plans to license his code to others. There’s a summary of his plans by the Associated Press.

Today, songs purchased from Apple’s online iTunes Music Store can’t be played on portable devices made by other companies. Songs purchased from many other online music stores also won’t work on iPods because they similarly use a form of copy-protection that Apple doesn’t support.

Johansen said he has developed a way to get around those restrictions by creating code that mimics Apple’s copy-protection system. But unlike his previous work, which he usually posts for free, the Norway native plans to capitalize on his efforts through his Redwood Shores-based DoubleTwist Ventures, said the company’s only other employee, managing director Monique Farantzos.

Yoko Ono sues EMI, subsidiary for $10M

NEW YORK - Yoko Ono sued music company EMI Group PLC and a subsidiary for $10 million Wednesday, claiming she was cheated out of royalties due from the sale of music recordings by her late husband, John Lennon.

The lawsuit, filed in Manhattan's state Supreme Court, accuses EMI and Capitol Records Inc. of violating a half-dozen agreements by "willfully and knowingly underreporting royalties" by hiding the "true use and disposition of Lennon's recordings."

Ono's three-page filing, which included a summons and notice but no detailed complaint, also accuses EMI and Capitol of "intentionally and systematically rendering dishonest and grossly deficient accounting statements."

Meyer said her company is appealing the judge's ruling.
