Google's Chrome aims to kill Windows, make Web the OS of choice

This could be the threat that Microsofties have feared since the 1990s, analysts say

September 2, 2008 (Computerworld) Google Inc.'s unveiling yesterday of a new browser is not really about trying to outmuscle the other top browsers, it's a key weapon in the company's effort to kill Windows, according to industry observers.

A beta version of the open source browser, called Chrome, is set to be available today. Chrome includes a new JavaScript engine that Google says will power Web applications better and faster than other browsers. Google Gears, which will provide offline access and local storage for Web applications, is also embedded in the browser.

When combined with Goolge Gears - which provides offline access to Web apps - Chrome becomes a potential "Windows Killer," he contended.

The Web site for Google's new open-source Chrome browser is slowly waking up. As I first began writing this post, there was a logo, a single screenshot (below), a link to a broken video, and a non-functioning download link. The page now redirects to Google.com, though.

The company is hosting a press conference at its Mountain View, Calif., headquarters Tuesday at 11 a.m. PDT. I will be there and will live blog. Sign up for a reminder in the box at right, or just show up on Webware.com.

Add to Google Calendar by Talking Into Your Cell

We recently developed a new web application that allows you to call a number from your cellphone, say something like "Have insurance meeting with Bobby tomorrow at 3pm" and have a new event for exactly that added to your Google Calendar. You can also call that number and say "Get events from 9/21/2007 through 9/25/2007" and it will email you (and text message you if you want) with a list of those events. We do this with (lost of) help from another neat little app we mentioned a while back known as Jott.

So, we wrote a small application that allows you to work with your Google Calendar using Jott. You do this by either saying something like, "Go to the bar on Friday at 10pm" to add an event or by saying something like, "Get events from monday to wednesday".

One other interesting factor not mentioned is how in the heck do you get 9 digits out of 6 letters, upside down or otherwise? This guy is one sick puppy... but he did make it to TechCrunch, maybe that's all he wanted...

If you think you’ve seen bizarre lawsuits before, check this one out. Pennsylvania resident Dylan Stephen Jayne is suing Google for crimes against humanity and is asking the court for $5 billion in damages. The charge: his social security number, when turned upside down and scrambled spells Google.

A copy of the complaint is below. And even though it is handwritten, it’s a real lawsuit. The original can be found at Justia here.

Dylan lodged eight filings with the court, including an accusation that the Philadelphia 76ers play a key role in the code to unscramble his social security number to spell Google.

I don’t think Google will have a lot to worry about with this case, but it does make you wonder why mental health services aren’t more readily available in the United States.

Iran Blocks Access To Google

TEHRAN (AFP) - Iran has blocked access to the Google search engine and its Gmail email service as part of a clampdown on material deemed to be offensive, the Mehr news agency reported on Monday.

"I can confirm these sites have been filtered," said Hamid Shahriari, the secretary of Iran's National Council of Information.

He did not explain why the sites were being blocked. Google, Gmail and several other foreign sites appeared to be inaccessible to Iranian users from Monday morning.

Iran has tough censorship on cultural products and internet access, banning thousands of websites and blogs containing sexual and politically critical material as well as women's rights and social networking sites.

The rules are applied by Internet Service Providers who use filtering programmes to prevent access to the banned sites.

Iran is in the midst of one of its toughest moral crackdowns in years, which has already seen thousands of women warned for failing to obey Islamic dress rules.

LA Times: Publishers Think Google Is Worse Than Osama bid Laden

While the SF Chronicle may have gone through the stages of Google grief, it appears the LA Times is still very much in the denial stage. In fact, it's such extreme denial, that it's reaching near-satire levels. Robert Niles at OJR points us to an editorial in the LA Times saying that "many publishers" believe that Google and the internet are "a greater threat... than Osama bin Laden." Niles does a good job walking through how ridiculous that statement is, including pointing out that the LA Times refuses to name a single publisher who actually believes that. However, as has been pointed out many, many times, Google is not a threat to newspapers. It's only helping them. It's funny that, on the rest of the internet, tremendous money is spent on "search engine marketing" and "search engine optimization" to get better ranked in Google. Yet, when Google ranks newspapers well, suddenly, it's worse than terrorists.

We are very (and we mean very) happy to announce that Panoramio will be acquired by Google.

The integration of photos from Panoramio in Google Earth has been so successful since John Hanke suggested it that we see the acquisition of Panoramio as a natural consequence. We have tightened our relationship with Google Earth more and more in recent months, and at the end we decided to walk one step further. After so much work together, honestly, we couldn’t imagine a better scenario than selling Panoramio to Google. Most people upload their photos to Panoramio to share them through Google Earth, and it’s way cool to see Panoramio’s photos in Google Earth, so the upcoming acquisition reaffirms the current win-win situation.

Google Presentations…one more step in the right direction

Google's announcement of presentation software to be added to their existing Docs and Spreadsheets applications is welcome news for those of us in Ed Tech. Google doesn't pretend that this is meant to compete with MS Office or even OpenOffice and it doesn't represent a viable alternative to these products for us. According to Google CEO, Eric Schmidt:

"We don't think its a competitor to Microsoft Office…It's casual and sharing and a better fit to how people use the Web.

"Well, we tried to keep it a secret as long as we could, but to be honest, we've been dying to tell you about the bun we've got in the oven. We'll soon be welcoming a new addition to the Google Docs & Spreadsheets family: presentations."

What this brings us is (hopefully), the easy collaboration tools, remote storage, and a proving ground for bigger and better Web 2.0 technologies from Google and elsewhere.

Google, YouTube face $US1b lawsuit

Entertainment giant Viacom Media says it will sue online search engine Google and its video-sharing website, YouTube, for more than $US1 billion.

Viacom, which owns MTV and Nickelodeon, says YouTube uses its shows illegally.

Viacom alleges that about 160,000 unauthorised clips of its programs have been loaded onto YouTube's site and viewed more than 1.5 billion times.

Google says it is confident YouTube has respected the legal rights of copyright holders.

"We will certainly not let this suit become a distraction to the continuing growth and strong performance of YouTube," Google said in a statement.

The lawsuit accuses Google and its popular online video unit of "massive intentional copyright infringement", threatening its ambitions to turn YouTube into a major distributor of entertainment and outlet for advertising.

Viacom says the decision to sue Google follows "a great deal of unproductive negotiation".

After months of testing, Google is ready to see whether businesses large and small are ready to pay to use its online suite of basic business applications, including spreadsheets, e-mail, word processing, calendars and instant messaging.

Google, which has steadily transformed itself from a search engine pioneer into a data access, Internet advertising and business application powerhouse, introduced on Feb. 22 its Google Apps Premier Edition at a cost of $50 per account per year.

The Premier Edition adds Google Docs and Spreadsheets; Gmail for mobile devices on BlackBerry; and application-level controls to Google Calendar, Gmail, Google Talk and Start Page applications that the company introduced as a free service starting in August 2006.
