Video: This Guy Can Make Almost Anything with DNA

Paul Rothemund, a researcher at Caltech, can make just about anything by folding DNA into complicated shapes -- as if he were practicing origami.

He uses sophisticated software to examine the stringy molecules, and identify points at which they can be kinked or pinned in place with smaller strands. He mixes those shorter compounds, which he calls staples, with the longer ones, and then they arrange themselves into amazing patterns.

This February, in Monterey, California he gave an amazing talk about those experiments. Today, that lecture became available on the TED conference website. It was not his first time speaking at the legendary gathering.

During his presentation, he showed animations of DNA molecules entangling with one another and forming complex patterns -- from smiley faces to counting machines.

As impressive as that may be, Rothemund stressed that his research isn't about making gadgets.

Lieberman: 'Country matters more than party'

Senator Joe Lieberman, the Democratic vice presidential nominee eight years ago, turned his back on his longtime political home tonight and heartily endorsed Republican John McCain and his style of bipartisanship.

"I'm here to support John McCain because country matters more than party," Lieberman told the GOP convention. "I am here tonight for a simple reason: John McCain is the best choice to bring our country together and lead our country forward. And dear friends I am here tonight because John McCain's whole life testifies to a great truth: being a Democrat or a Republican is important. But it is nowhere near as important as being an American."

Lieberman said that Obama has no record of bipartisan accomplishment or standing up to Democratic interest groups, and he joined in the defense of McCain's running mate.

Google's Chrome aims to kill Windows, make Web the OS of choice

This could be the threat that Microsofties have feared since the 1990s, analysts say

September 2, 2008 (Computerworld) Google Inc.'s unveiling yesterday of a new browser is not really about trying to outmuscle the other top browsers, it's a key weapon in the company's effort to kill Windows, according to industry observers.

A beta version of the open source browser, called Chrome, is set to be available today. Chrome includes a new JavaScript engine that Google says will power Web applications better and faster than other browsers. Google Gears, which will provide offline access and local storage for Web applications, is also embedded in the browser.

When combined with Goolge Gears - which provides offline access to Web apps - Chrome becomes a potential "Windows Killer," he contended.

U.S. hands over Anbar, Iraq's once-deadliest region

Baghdad - The US military handed over control of Anbar Province Monday, marking a significant milestone in the Iraq war.

Anbar was the deadliest Iraqi province for US troops, with nearly 1 in every 3 Americans killed there. It was once the symbol of Sunni resistance, the base of operations for Al Qaeda, and home to two major US military offensives and the most intense urban combat of the war.

But in the past two years, Anbar has emerged as the symbol of a turnaround as Sunni sheikhs formed "Awakening Councils," ousted Al Qaeda, and created community police forces.

Anbar is the 11th of Iraq's 18 provinces to return to Iraqi control, but it is the first predominately Sunni province handed over.

While most praise the transition, some Iraqis are concerned that corrupt police and Al Qaeda remain a threat.

Opposition leaders in Russia's volatile Ingushetia region have condemned the killing of the owner of a website critical of the Kremlin.

Magomed Yevloyev was arrested and later shot after getting off the same flight as the local, Kremlin-backed leader.

Russian prosecutors say they have opened a criminal investigation into the case.

But opposition leaders say the killing is part of Russia's policy of "open genocide" towards the Ingush people.

"The policy of double standards, which is pursued by the Russian leadership, and the open genocide of the Ingush people make us take cardinal decisions," they said comments published on Mr Yevloyev's website, Ingushetiya.ru.

Russia praises EU over sanctions

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has welcomed as "realistic" an EU decision not to impose sanctions on his country over its recent invasion of Georgia.

But Mr Medvedev said it was "sad" that the EU, which held a crisis summit, still did not understand what motivated Russia into sending in troops.

EU leaders decided to suspend talks on a strategic pact with Russia until its troops were withdrawn from Georgia.

Tensions between Russia and the West soared in the wake of the conflict.

In an interview with the Euronews television channel, Mr Medvedev said the outcome of the EU meeting was "double-edged".

"Firstly, unfortunately, there is still no understanding of what motivated Russia to make decisions on repelling the Georgian aggression and recognising South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states," he said.

Moscow says it sent troops into Georgia to halt an attempt by Georgia to restore control over South Ossetia, which broke away in the 1990s.

The Web site for Google's new open-source Chrome browser is slowly waking up. As I first began writing this post, there was a logo, a single screenshot (below), a link to a broken video, and a non-functioning download link. The page now redirects to Google.com, though.

The company is hosting a press conference at its Mountain View, Calif., headquarters Tuesday at 11 a.m. PDT. I will be there and will live blog. Sign up for a reminder in the box at right, or just show up on Webware.com.

Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise is calling on liberal filmmaker Michael Moore to apologize after he said Friday that the timing of Hurricane Gustav is “proof that there is a God in heaven,” since the storm approaching the Gulf Coast could disrupt next week’s Republican National Convention.

Moore made the remarks to MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann. Republicans have been monitoring the storm’s progress, considering whether to postpone their convention in St. Paul, Minn., if the storm wreaks havoc on the New Orleans area, just three years after Hurricane Katrina.

“I was just thinking, this Gustav is proof that there is a God in heaven,” Moore said. “To just have it planned at the same time, that it would actually be on its way to New Orleans for Day One of the Republican convention, up in the Twin Cities, at the top of the Mississippi River.”

US GDP rebounds with 3.3% growth

The US economy grew at a revised 3.3% annually in the second quarter of 2008, the Commerce Department said, much higher than its first estimate of 1.9%.

The rebound was linked to strong US exports, helped by the weak dollar, while government tax rebates also boosted consumer spending.

GDP grew at a rate of 0.9% in the first quarter, after a 0.2% contraction in the last three months of 2007.

The Federal Reserve has warned the economy will remain weak this year.

"While we're not out of the woods yet, maybe we're beginning to see some sunlight," said John Wilson, equity strategist at Morgan Keegan.

"At some point, the market will begin to look through the trough and gauge the strength of the coming upturn."

'No recession'

The data showed that exports grew at an annualised rate of 13.2%, higher than the government's initial estimate of 9.2%.
