US kills 'senior Baghdad bomber'

A man said to be the planner of series of deadly al-Qaeda attacks in Iraq has been killed, the US military says.

Mahir al-Zubaydi, also known as Abu Assad or Abu Rami, was said to head the group behind bombings which killed at least 16 people in Baghdad this week.

US officials described him as the al-Qaeda military commander for the whole of Baghdad east of the Tigris river.

They say he played a key role in planning some of the worst atrocities in Iraq over the past few years.

Zubaydi also took part in the videotaped killing of four Russian diplomats in June 2006, officials say.

"His removal from the AQI [al-Qaeda Iraq] network will send shockwaves through Baghdad's terrorist bombing networks," a US spokesman told the Associated Press.

The spokesman said the organisation, which has seen a drop in support as Sunni Muslim Awakening Councils have collaborated with the US to curb violence, would now have even greater difficulty recruiting new members.

China lung disease 'to kill 83m'

A US study has suggested that more than 80 million people in China will die in the next 25 years as a result of lung disease.

One in three cigarettes in the world is smoked in China

The research says the vast majority of those premature deaths are preventable.

The study focused on the devastating impact of smoking and the widespread practice of burning wood or coal at home for cooking and heating.

The Harvard School of Public Health research looked at a 30-year period, spanning the last five and the next 25.

Respiratory disease is already a leading cause of death in China, but this latest study suggests a startling rise.

In the 30-year period, it calculates, about 83 million Chinese people will die prematurely of lung disease.

Las Vegas jury finds O.J. Simpson guilty

LAS VEGAS -- A jury convicted O.J. Simpson of armed robbery and kidnapping late Friday night, 13 years to the day after he was acquitted of killing his ex-wife and her friend in Los Angeles.

Simpson and his codefendant, Clarence Stewart, were both convicted on all 12 counts. As the court clerk read "guilty" 24 times shortly before 11 p.m., Simpson grimaced and then nodded slightly, quickly regaining his composure. From the gallery, his sister, Carmelita Durio, wept on a friend's shoulder.

In fact, the top four on this list are all Democratic Party Presidential wannabes. Christopher Dodd is number one on the list, followed by John Kerry, then Barack Obama, and then Hillary Clinton at number four.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac together back about one-half of the country's $12 trillion mortgage market. That's trillion. With a "T".

So start a new tally in your head. How many articles will you see tying even Christopher Dodd (who is Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee) to the collapse of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.....much less Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton?

The news was full of reports of Sarah Palin's alleged "gaffe" that showed that she "obviously doesn't know how Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac works".

The upshot here is that Barack Obama knows exactly how they operate.

Reviews under way, to be ready for the next president, are intended to accelerate a new strategy.

Washington - The US military is working to put a new strategy in place for Afghanistan and Pakistan that could allow it to expand airfields, preposition military forces and equipment, and prepare for a more robust effort soon against Islamist extremists in the region.

Frustrated for years by a lack of direction from the White House on Afghanistan, many defense officials say time is of the essence in developing a new way forward and having it ready to implement as soon as a new president is seated and can agree to it.

The military sees this period – as one administration is ending and another is set to begin – as an opportunity to offer the next president an Afghanistan strategy less shaped by lofty democratic ideals and more by what Pentagon strategists believe can actually be achieved there.

State sues software company under Spyware Act

Washington state has sued a Texas software company and its manager, alleging that their alarming and false notices of "critical errors" on the computers of online customers violate a 2005 state law, the Computer Spyware Act.

The suit, filed Sept. 16 in King County Superior Court, alleges that Branch Software Inc. of The Woodlands, Texas, and its chief executive, James McCreary IV, sent "CRITICAL ERROR!" messages to "User" from "Local System" that advise the user to download the company's registry repair product "immediately!" to repair the purported defects.

Tests showed that even error-free computers displayed the messages, according to the suit. The software to fix the purported problems cost $40.

The Spyware Act makes it unlawful for a person who doesn't own the computer to induce the owner to install software by misrepresenting how necessary the software is for the computer's proper operation.

The case is Washington v. McCreary.

House Defeats Wall Street Bailout Bill

Stocks spiraled downward as much as 685 points on Monday as a $700 billion bailout of Wall Street ended in defeat in the House of Representatives.

House leaders held open the vote as they tried to sway reluctant lawmakers to support the plan, which failed 205-228. Arm-twisting continued even after the vote clock expired. One member, retiring Republican Rep. Jerry Weller, did not vote.

"We did our part," said Hoyer of Maryland. "As I said on the floor, this is a bipartisan responsibility and we think (Democrats) met our responsibility."

But many lawmakers continued to oppose the plan for a variety of reasons, including the massive price tag that would expand the national debt, and GOP members said their constituents were calling 10-1 in opposition to the bill, which had been described as too much government intervention. Of 235 Democrats, 140 supported the legislation. Of 199 Republicans, 133 opposed it.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. lawmakers on Sunday were set to sign off on a deal to create a $700 billion fund to buy bad debt from ailing banks in a bid to stem an escalating credit crisis that threatened to engulf the global economy.

U.S. congressional leaders had pushed talks into the early morning on Sunday to nail down the bailout deal in the hope of halting a downward spiral in the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.

The high-stakes negotiations over the financial rescue package had roiled financial markets and altered the course of the U.S. presidential campaign less than six weeks before the election.

"We've made great progress," House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters after the night of marathon closed-door talks. "We have to get it committed to paper so we can formally agree."

It was unclear when the House and Senate might vote on the legislation or whether last-minute hitches might arise.

Russia to loan Chavez $1 billion for arms

Russia will loan Venezuela $1 billion for weapons purchases and military development, a Russian official said Friday.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is on his second visit to Russia in two months. He met with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Thursday, and on Friday met with Russian President Dmitri Medvedev, The New York Times (NYSE:NYT) reported.

An unnamed Kremlin official said the billion-dollar deal will help the Venezuelan military to boost its technological capabilities. The spokesman did not reportedly elaborate on the details of the deal.

Between 2005 and 2007, Venezuela signed 12 contracts for weapons purchases from Russia. The deals totaled more than $4.4 billion, a government statement said.

"Latin America, of course, is becoming an obvious link in the chain making up a multi-polar world," Putin said during his meeting with Chavez. "We will allocate more and more attention to this vector of our economics and foreign policy."

Sen. Kennedy released from hospital

BOSTON (Reuters) - Ailing Sen. Edward Kennedy, a liberal giant and patriarch of America's most storied political family, was examined and released from a Massachusetts hospital on Friday after suffering a mild seizure, officials said.

"Senator Kennedy experienced a mild seizure at home in Hyannis Port today and was taken to Cape Cod Hospital for examination," said a statement from the office of the 76-year-old Massachusetts Democrat, who was diagnosed with brain cancer in May.

"Doctors believe the incident was triggered by a change in medication. Senator Kennedy will return home tonight and looks forward to watching the debate," the statement added, referring to the presidential candidates' debate between Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama on Friday night.

Beaverton boy lauded for solar cell invention

BEAVERTON, Ore. – A new invention could revolutionize solar energy – and it was made by a 12-year-old in Beaverton.

Despite his age, William Yuan has already studied nuclear fusion and nanotechnology, and he is on his way to solving the energy crisis.

It all started with Legos - after he learned nanotechnology to make robots take off. The seventh grader then got an idea inspired by the sun.

"Solar it seems underused, and there are only a few problems with it," Yuan said.

"This solar cell can't be generating this much electricity, it can't be absorbing this much extra light," he recalled thinking.

If he is right, solar panels with his 3D cells would provide 500 times more light absorption than commercially-available solar cells and nine times more than cutting-edge 3D solar cells.

"Which would make solar energy actually a viable energy source for the Pacific Northwest," Yuan said.

His next step is to get a manufacturer and market it.

For most of us, security issues happen to "other people"—we block popup ads, we carefully examine dialog boxes and, for those of us on the Mac platform, we snicker when confronted with something that attempts to mimic a Windows system warning. But everyone knows that they are exceptional—what's the behavior of a more typical user like? Some researchers have tested how college students respond to fake dialog boxes in browser popup windows and found that the students are so anxious to get the dialog out of the way, they click right through obvious warning signs.

The authors suggest that user training might help more people recognize the risks involved with fake popups and the diagnostic signs of genuine Windows dialogs, but the fact that the students didn't appear to spend any more time evaluating the fake dialogs raises questions as to whether education is enough.
