Google's Chrome aims to kill Windows, make Web the OS of choice

This could be the threat that Microsofties have feared since the 1990s, analysts say

September 2, 2008 (Computerworld) Google Inc.'s unveiling yesterday of a new browser is not really about trying to outmuscle the other top browsers, it's a key weapon in the company's effort to kill Windows, according to industry observers.

A beta version of the open source browser, called Chrome, is set to be available today. Chrome includes a new JavaScript engine that Google says will power Web applications better and faster than other browsers. Google Gears, which will provide offline access and local storage for Web applications, is also embedded in the browser.

When combined with Goolge Gears - which provides offline access to Web apps - Chrome becomes a potential "Windows Killer," he contended.

Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise is calling on liberal filmmaker Michael Moore to apologize after he said Friday that the timing of Hurricane Gustav is “proof that there is a God in heaven,” since the storm approaching the Gulf Coast could disrupt next week’s Republican National Convention.

Moore made the remarks to MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann. Republicans have been monitoring the storm’s progress, considering whether to postpone their convention in St. Paul, Minn., if the storm wreaks havoc on the New Orleans area, just three years after Hurricane Katrina.

“I was just thinking, this Gustav is proof that there is a God in heaven,” Moore said. “To just have it planned at the same time, that it would actually be on its way to New Orleans for Day One of the Republican convention, up in the Twin Cities, at the top of the Mississippi River.”

The CAT Scan/Beatles Connection

If not for the musical group, the Beatles, we wouldn’t have CT scans, aka CAT scans, the advanced medical scanning technology that lets your doctor see how badly your bones are broken.

The company, known as EMI for short, was a typical industrial scientific company at the time, working on military technology and the burgeoning field of electronics. Hounsfield was a skilled but unexceptional scientist, leading a team that built the first all-transistor computer in 1958.

That was the bang - over the next decade (and for years thereafter) the company earned millions of dollars from the fab four. So much money, the company almost didn’t know what to do with it.

EMI gave Hounsfield the freedom to pursue independent research. Hounsfield’s breakthrough was combining his work with computers together with an interest in X-rays. X-rays were still pretty much used to image bodies in two dimensions from a fixed position.

In an article in Wednesday’s New York Times, Before the Gunfire, Cyberattacks, John Markoff describes how the Russia-Georgia conflict broke out on the Internet weeks before the troops engaged.

“Weeks before bombs started falling on Georgia, a security researcher in suburban Massachusetts was watching an attack against the country in cyberspace. Jose Nazario of Arbor Networks in Lexington noticed a stream of data directed at Georgian government sites containing the message: “win+love+in+Rusia.”

Other Internet experts in the United States said the attacks against Georgia’s Internet infrastructure began as early as July 20, with coordinated barrages of millions of requests — known as distributed denial of service, or D.D.O.S., attacks — that overloaded and effectively shut down Georgian servers.

As it turns out, the July attack may have been a dress rehearsal for an all-out cyberwar once the shooting started between Georgia and Russia.

Russia Threatens Nuclear Attack On Poland

Much is happening today in Georgia and other states formerly under the thumb of Russia. President Saakashvili has signed a cease-fire agreement; Russian troops have nevertheless advanced within 35 miles of Tbilisi; President Bush denounced Russia for "bullying and intimidation" and said that "Moscow must honor its commitment to withdraw its invading forces from all Georgian territory," something Russia plainly has no intention of doing.

Yesterday, in what may or may not have been a coincidence of timing, the U.S and Poland announced that after 18 months of negotiations, they have reached on an agreement whereby the U.S. will furnish Patriot missiles to Poland and will locate a missile interceptor base in that country.

A top Russian general said Friday that Poland's agreement to accept a U.S. missile interceptor base exposes the ex-communist nation to attack, possibly by nuclear weapons, the Interfax news agency reported.

Lennon killer denied parole again

John Lennon's killer has been denied parole for a fifth time because of "concern for the public safety and welfare", it has been announced.

Mark Chapman, 53, will remain in Attica prison, New York, for at least another two years.

Chapman told parole board members at a hearing that he planned the killing "with an essentially clear mind".

A lawyer for Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, said she was "very pleased" with the board's decision.

Chapman shot the former Beatle as he and wife Ono returned to their Manhattan apartment building on 8 December 1980.

He has been in prison for 27 years since pleading guilty to the murder.

The board noted that Chapman had a clean disciplinary record since 1994 but said his conduct had "precipitated a horrendously tragic event which has impacted many individuals".

The conflict encompasses many of the major issues that defined international politics in this region for the past decade - and likely will continue to well into the future. Those concerns include the struggle for influence between Russia and the United States; energy, with the oil pipeline running through Georgia; the promotion of democracy, and the sovereignty of small countries.

Second, it will send a very clear message to Western powers, particularly the United States, that Russia is back as the major force in this part of the world.

The bitter, brutal conflict in Georgia is far more than just another example of ethnic strife, Russian aggression or the last gasps of the Soviet Union's unraveling.

First, the invasion will weaken, if not altogether destroy, the current Georgian state and its government.

Prophet Muhammad novel scrapped

Plans to release a novel about Prophet Muhammad's child bride A'isha have been scrapped by US publishers Random House over fears it could spark violence.

The Jewel of Medina, the debut novel by journalist Sherry Jones, was due to hit shelves on 12 August.

Random House said it had been advised the book "might be offensive" to some Muslims, and "could incite acts of violence by a small, radical segment."

"We decided, after much deliberation, to postpone publication," it added.

The decision was taken "for the safety of the author, employees of Random House, booksellers and anyone else who would be involved in distribution and sale of the novel," said the company's deputy publisher Thomas Perry in a statement.

The novel traces the life of A'isha, who is often referred to as Muhammad's favorite wife, from her engagement at the age of six, until the prophet's death.

Jones said that she was shocked to learn in May, that publication would be postponed indefinitely.

"I believe we would have won Iowa, and Clinton today would therefore have been the nominee," Howard Wolfson told ABCNews.com in an interview released Monday, because internal campaign polling showed "our voters and Edwards voters were the same people. They were older, pro-union. Not all, but maybe two-thirds of them would have been for us and we would have barely beaten Obama."

Two months after Edwards first denied rumors of the affair, Barack Obama's win in the Iowa caucuses — and Clinton's third-place showing behind Edwards — fundamentally altered the shape of the race.

John Edwards, a onetime Democratic golden boy, confessed Friday he cheated on his cancer-stricken wife, then lied to cover up his infidelity while running for President.

His bombshell declaration put his political future into cardiac arrest. Even former admirers lined up to throw him under the bus.

"Thousands of friends of the senators and his supporters have put their faith and confidence in him, and he's let them down," said his campaign manager, ex-Rep. David Bonior (Mich.). "They've been betrayed by his action."

Edwards' fall was spectacular, but not sudden. Ten months ago, when a supermarket tabloid reported the affair, he denied it. His alibi for that lie may be his political epitaph: It was "99% honest."

But in a separate statement, Elizabeth vowed to stand behind him.

"I am proud of the courage John showed by his honesty in the face of shame," she said.

WASHINGTON - Bill Clinton regrets some things he said - and didn't say - on the campaign trail. But one thing he still can't bring himself to utter: Barack Obama is ready to be President.

"You can argue that nobody is ready to be President, the former President told ABC.

"I certainly learned a lot about the job in the first year," Clinton said from Rwanda. "You can argue that even if you've been vice president for eight years, that no one can be fully ready for the pressures of the office."

But his feelings for the press' treatment of his wife are another matter, although he declined to elaborate.

"A different standard was applied to the finest candidate I ever supported," he said.

Clinton may seek roll-call vote at Dems' convention

WASHINGTON - Egged on by die-hard supporters, Hillary Rodham Clinton is giving every indication that she will not go quietly or meekly into the Democratic National Convention in Denver later this month.

Even as she heads to Las Vegas Friday in her first solo trip to campaign for Obama, Clinton is holding out the prospect of a drawn-out nominating vote at the convention that experts say at best would be a distraction and at worst a disaster.

Though Barack Obama is to be formally nominated as the Democratic presidential candidate in just three weeks, Clinton Thursday refused to say whether she'll demand that roll-call vote to highlight the delegates she won in the hotly contested primaries earlier this year.

Some experts say Clinton's action might stem from lingering hard feelings from the primaries, but others say she's probably just pressing her case in negotiations with the Obama camp.

BEIJING (Reuters) - Assailants killed 16 Chinese police in the restive Xinjiang region on Monday, the official Xinhua news agency said, in just the sort of violence Beijing had hoped to prevent four days before the start of the Olympics.

The unidentified attackers drove up in two vehicles and tossed grenades into a border station of the far western region near the Old Silk Road city of Kashgar, Xinhua reported.

Sixteen policemen were also hurt.

Under heavy security scrutiny in the run-up to the August 8-24 Games, Xinjiang is home to some 8 million Muslim, Turkic-speaking Uighurs, many of them resentful of Chinese controls on religion and the big ethnic Han Chinese presence.

China accuses militant Uighurs of working with al Qaeda to bring about an independent state called East Turkestan, and says it has foiled terror plots there targeting the Games.

Group: Clinton out of running for VP post

WASHINGTON - Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) will not be Barack Obama's running mate, but she will be the keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention -- at least that is what some of her boosters are saying.

Though Democratic and Obama aides say no decision has been announced on either score, a group called Vote Both, created to lobby Obama to pick the New York senator as his second, Thursday said Clinton is out of the running.

"Because of your work, Senator Obama asked Hillary to be his keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention!" said Vote Both founders Adam Parkhomenko and Sam Arora on their Web site. "Regretfully, this means that Senator Hillary Clinton is no longer under consideration as Senator Obama's running mate."

Asked how he knows, Arora told The Associated Press, "All indications we have from people close to Senator Clinton and Senator Obama are that Hillary is not on the short list."
