While the Beatles were at the height of their success in the West, back in the USSR they were a forbidden influence. But that did not stop them from being heard.

An affable bear of a man with a wild beard, Mr Vasin sits amid his fantastic collection of Beatles memorabilia - ceramic statues of the "Fab Four", an All You Need is Love teapot, an Abbey Road street sign - and says: "I fell in love with the Beatles 40 years ago. They became my friends, my spiritual brothers."

Generations of Soviet children have shared his passion for the Beatles.

As Russian cultural commentator Artemy Troitsky says: "The Beatles turned tens of millions of Soviet youngsters to another religion."

Mr Troitsky also insists the Fab Four and their music had a more profound impact.

"They alienated a whole generation from their Communist motherland," he says.

From Russia to Ukraine and Belarus the Beatles played an important part in the lives of millions behind the Iron Curtain.

Obamamania? Not in Russia for presidential visit

MOSCOW (Reuters) - For once, the adoring crowds were absent as Barack Obama visited Russia this week.

Feted in many countries as a global superstar and accustomed to rapturous welcomes when he travels at home and abroad, the U.S. president received a more muted response during two days of talks in Moscow.

Instead of cheering crowds lining the streets, Obama's motorcade was greeted with some smiles and waves as it sped through the Russian capital. Most people looked on, showing little reaction.

"We are maybe the one country in the world where there is no Obamamania," Sergei Markov, a parliamentary deputy from the ruling United Russia party, told Reuters.

He suggested that people's busy lives and ignorance of Obama's schedule accounted for the low turnout to greet him. "Russian people have a lot of problems. They have a lot of work. They have no time to go and make crowds."

How 'Beatles: Rock Band' came together

LOS ANGELES--If you were among the thousands of people at Microsoft's E3 press briefing on Monday, it's a pretty sure bet that the appearance on-stage there of Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and Yoko Ono was one of the most unexpected things imaginable.

Foster said the story begins a couple of years ago, when MTV President Van Toffler ran into Dhani Harrison, son of the late Beatles guitarist George Harrison, in some random social setting.

But being a "Rock Band" fan, Dhani Harrison took his idea to Harmonix CEO and co-founder Alex Rigopulos and began a conversation about what a Beatles version of "Rock Band" could be. Foster said that the idea seemed like a huge challenge, but, deciding to pursue it, Harrison began evangelizing the idea to Apple Corps, the Beatles' U.K. publisher, and its shareholders, particularly McCartney, Starr, and Ono.

And, amazingly, inexplicably, it worked.

Tear Drop Monument

This is the "TEAR DROP" made and installed by the Russians to honor those who died in 9 11 and a statement against terrorism. It is very impressive. The tear drop is lined up with the Statue of Liberty.

The walkway is made of stones.

Kazakhstan's famous '130-year-old'

"Do you remember Tsar Nikolai's era? When the Red Army came and when Vladimir Lenin died? Well I do. So take a guess how old I am."

Meet Sohan Dosova - the newly found treasure of Kazakhstan. She is 130 years old, at least she is according to her documents.

The Soviet passport issued in the early 1980s states that Sohan Dosova was born in the Karaganda region on 27 March 1879.

Now after a new national census in Kazakhstan, she has been "rediscovered".

"This is a truly unique case," says Ludmila Kolesova, the head of Karaganda region statistics agency.

"According to international standards we do not usually seek proof of ID when collecting census data, but when it came to Sohan Dosova we had to check her documents and verify this information with the social services department. They confirmed her date of birth."

Sohan had 10 children, and three of them are still alive. Her son had seven children. One of two daughters had six children, and the other, 22.

Putin says Russia can beat crisis

This year will be "very difficult" for the Russian economy, but the country will come out of the downturn, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has said.

He told the state Duma, or lower house, that a 3tn rouble ($90bn; £60bn) package of aid measures would help Russia survive the economic crisis.

"What we can definitely and must say is that Russia will overcome the crisis," Mr Putin said.

He said Russia would retain its place as one of the world's bigger economies.

"To achieve this, we must all work in a well-coordinated manner, as one team," Mr Putin said.

Beatles stars reunite at concert

Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr last performed together in 2002.

Former Beatles Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr performed together at a New York charity show on Saturday night.

Sir Paul headlined the concert, in aid of The David Lynch Foundation, and sang a string of Beatles and solo career hits before bringing Starr on stage.

The pair performed the Beatles song, With a Little Help from My Friends together before embracing afterwards.

Sir Paul also paid a tearful tribute to the late John Lennon before playing Here Today, a song he wrote for him.

The star also dedicated the song Blackbird to US President Barack Obama.

After Sir Paul played his set, which included video clips of Beatle footage, he introduced Starr as "Billy Shears".

A nod to Starr's pseudonym on the Beatles song Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

At Least 20 Are Dead as Buildings Fall After Quake in Italy

ROME — At least 20 people died and thousands were left homeless when an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 shook central Italy early Monday morning, seriously damaging buildings in the mountainous Abruzzo Region east of Rome, officials told Italian news media.

The epicenter was in L’Aquila, a picturesque Medieval fortress hill town, where eight people died and more were trapped under rubble, officials said.

The situation is “extremely critical, as many buildings have collapsed,” Luca Spoletini, a spokesman for Italy’s Civil Protection Agency, told the ANSA news agency. Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi declared a state of emergency in the region.

The quake struck around 3:30 a.m. and could be felt as far away as Rome, some 95 miles to the west, where it rattled furniture and set off car alarms.

Several buildings in L’Aquila were reduced to rubble.

Electricity, phone and gas lines were also reported damaged, as aftershocks continued.
