Out-of-body experience recreated

Experts have found a way to trigger an out-of-body experience in volunteers.

In the Swiss experiments, the researchers asked volunteers to stand in front of a camera while wearing video-display goggles.

Through these goggles, the volunteers could see a camera view of their own back - a three-dimensional "virtual own body" that appeared to be standing in front of them.

When the researchers stroked the back of the volunteer with a pen, the volunteer could see their virtual back being stroked either simultaneously or with a time lag.

The volunteers reported that the sensation seemed to be caused by the pen on their virtual back, rather than their real back, making them feel as if the virtual body was their own rather than a hologram.

Scientists have long suspected that the clue to these extraordinary, and sometimes life-changing, experiences lies in disrupting our normal illusion of being a self behind our eyes, and replacing it with a new viewpoint

Dont drink your beer from a glass

The finding that men who do not use a glass when they drink beer are less depressed and less likely to attempt suicide than are men who drink beer from the can and men who do not drink at all, leads one researcher to conclude that beer cans contain powerful - and potentially addictive - mood-altering chemicals.
Study author Pointy Head, Th.u.D., a psychologist at the State University of New York in Algony, also found that men who routinely drank beer without a glass became increasingly depressed as more time elapsed since their last alcoholic encounter. There was no such correlation for men who regularly used a glass.

What this Pointy Head, Th.u.D., and that Gordon G. Gallup, Ph.D., have in common, is that they confuse statistically found out correlations with causation, and, additionally, they determine arbitrarily what be the cause and what be the effect.
This is the very way, statistic-based research addles the laymen.

Monkey Apparently Picks Lock, Escapes

TUPELO, Mississippi (AP) - A monkey that freed himself two weeks ago from a Mississippi zoo has escaped again, zoo officials said. Tupelo Buffalo Park and Zoo Manager Kirk Nemecheck and other employees noticed the white-faced capuchin's cage open and lock on the ground around 8:30 a.m. Monday.

"This is the craziest thing I have ever seen," Nemecheck said. "I have heard of chimps and orangutans that can pick locks. I've also heard a guy who swears his raccoon can pick a lock, but I've never heard of a monkey who can pick a lock."

This marks the third time Oliver has escaped from the zoo. About six-years ago the monkey escaped and ran amok on the grounds of Tupelo Country Club before being captured and returned to the zoo.

Right-wing Authoritarianism

Right-wing Authoritarianism (RWA) is a psychological personality variable or "ideological attitude".

It is defined as the convergence of three attitudinal clusters in an individual:

Authoritarian submission — a high degree of submission to the authorities who are perceived to be established and legitimate in the society in which one lives. "It is good to have a strong authoritarian leader."
Authoritarian aggression — a general aggressiveness, directed against various persons, that is perceived to be sanctioned by established authorities. "It is acceptable to be cruel to those who do not follow the rules."
Conventionalism — a high degree of adherence to the social conventions that are perceived to be endorsed by society and its established authorities. "Traditional ways are best."

It is not an ideological measure, but a social psychological one that, in spite of its name, is not necessarily associated with right-wing political views.

The major application of uranium in the military sector is in high-density penetrators. This ammunition consists of depleted uranium (DU) alloyed with 1–2% other elements. At high impact speed, the density, hardness, and flammability of the projectile enable destruction of heavily armored targets. Tank armor and the removable armor on combat vehicles are also hardened with depleted uranium (DU) plates.

Depleted uranium is also used as a shielding material in some containers used to store and transport radioactive materials.^[4] Other uses of DU include counterweights for aircraft control surfaces, as ballast for missile re-entry vehicles and as a shielding material.^[3] Due to its high density, this material is found in inertial guidance devices and in gyroscopic compasses

Counter to popular belief, the main risk of exposure to DU is chemical poisoning by uranium oxide rather than radioactivity (uranium being only a weak alpha emitter).

Mystery of wobbly Earth solved

The century-old mystery of why the Earth 'wobbles' has been solved by a NASA scientist studying the behaviour of oceans.

The Chandler wobble, named after its 1891 discoverer, Seth Carlo Chandler Jr, is one of several wobbles the Earth makes as it rotates on its axis. Scientists who have been aware of its presence, for more than 100 years, have been stumped on the reasons for the effect.

Using calculations based on applying numerical models of the ocean to data obtained on the Chandler wobble between 1985-95, Dr Gross has determined the principles causes of the wobble. He found the wobble is due to fluctuating pressure on the bottom of the ocean, caused by temperature and salinity changes, and wind-driven changes in the circulation of the oceans.

Move any mountains recently?

The mystery of the building of how the ancients moved large blocks of stone across the land to build Neolithic stone circles and the pyramids at Giza has taxed the greatest minds for centuries. Gangs of squaddies have been press-ganged into busting their humps (nearly literally) dragging large rocks across the Salisbury plains usually disproving some clever chap's theories. Perhaps in a millennia or two cockroach archaeologists will wonder what we were up to scattering rocks about in farmer's fields and conduct experiments to try and work out why we did it.

If robots and humans are ever truly going to bond, it's going to have to be over drinks in a dimly lit bar. That, more or less, is the notion behind Roboexotica, an annual event in Vienna, Austria, at which "cocktail robots" show whether they've committed the Mr. Boston bartending guide to memory. Some even offer a running commentary.

The mojito-mixing contraption in this picture is Robomoji. Its 32-year-old inventor, a German man named Robert Martin, spoke to the Reuters news service at this year's event, which began Tuesday and runs through the weekend. "I just love to develop my robot. I have worked on it for the past four years, and every year it goes a step further," Martin said. "Next year I'll get the bit fixed where it stirs the drink and then puts in a straw."
