Virgin America, a 'new generation' low-fare airline, intends to launch scheduled domestic airline service early in 2007 from its home base at San Francisco International Airport to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport upon final government approval.

The Air Transport Association (ATA), the industry trade organization representing leading U.S. airlines, this week reminded passengers of new and more restrictive travel document policies set to take effect in early 2007 for all travelers entering or re-entering the United States by air from any part of the Western Hemisphere.

A federal appeals court should strike a provision of US anti-AIDS law that undermines proven and effective efforts to fight HIV/AIDS among sex workers, thus putting their lives and health at risk, Human Rights Watch and a coalition of 26 public health experts, human rights organizations and HIV/AIDS groups said December 21 in an amicus curiae to the court.

- The stadium features two monumental arches, soaring 320 feet above the playing field, which support a retractable roof. As the longest single span roof structure in the world, each boxed arch is 35 feet wide by 17 feet deep. Weighing 3,255 tons each, these impressive structures span 1,290 feet in length. As one of the first components to be constructed, the arches will form a striking silhouette on the Arlington landscape as sunlight reflects against the metallic surface during the day and a tailored lighting system reflects the form at night.

- Designed to be open or closed, depending on weather conditions, the expansive retractable roof is the largest of its kind in the world and measures approximately 661,000 square feet. When closed, the roof encompasses 104 million cubic feet of volume, making it the largest enclosed NFL stadium in the world. The retractable roof is designed specifically to emulate the current Texas Stadium opening which is recognized around the world and allow views inward and outward. Each panel can open or close in 12 minutes. The entire playing field can be seen from directly above.

- The stadium features the largest retractable end zone doors in the world. Each has a five-leaf, clear, retractable opening measuring 120 feet high by 180 feet wide. The five 38-foot panels take only 18 minutes to open or close. By using clear glass for the door panels, spectators experience panoramic vistas from within the seating bowl and when circulating through the stadium concourses. Moreover, the operability provides air circulation during game-day and non-game-day events.

- The design includes 200 suites that have been decentralized and are in eight locations distributed across five separate levels of the stadium. The most unique will be the field-level sideline suites for up-close and personal viewing of the games.

“If New Jersey were to give same-sex couples the right to marry, that is marriage itself and not civil unions, the state would likely experience a surge in spending on weddings by same-sex couples who currently live in New Jersey, as well as an increase in wedding and tourist spending by same-sex couples from other states,” she commented in the study.

Based on Badgett’s predictions, sales by New Jersey’s wedding and tourism-related businesses could rise by more than $100 million a year the first years following legalization of same-sex marriage. As a result, she added, the state’s gross receipt tax revenues would rise by $7.2 million per year.

“The recent experiences of San Francisco and Portland suggest that the local economic benefits of same-sex weddings are real and large,” Badgett offers in the study. For instance, the couples who married in San Francisco in 2004 came from 46 states and eight countries. Likewise, businesses in Portland and San Francisco reported that same-sex wedding visitors spent substantial amounts of money on wedding-related goods and services.

Furthermore, the study reports, “Massachusetts witnessed increased demand for hotels, catering services and other wedding-related goods and services when same-sex couples began to marry there in May 2004.”

According to Badgett, “as of today, New Jersey would have no competition from other states for these visitors since Massachusetts does not currently allow out-of-state same-sex couples to marry there.

“Even if other states eventually allow same-sex couples to marry, New Jersey would likely remain a prime destination for same-sex couples on the east coast,” she added. “New Jersey is within a short driving range of several cities with concentrations of same-sex couples, suggesting that the state would retain appeal for out-of-state same-sex couples.”

New Jersey Governer Signs Same Sex Marriage Law

According to the Associated Press, when the law goes into effect Feb. 19, New Jersey will become the third state offering civil unions to same-sex couples and the fifth allowing same-sex couples some version of marriage.

"We must recognize that many gay and lesbian couples in New Jersey are in committed relationships and deserve the same benefits and rights as every other family in this state," Corzine said in signing the legislation,reports the AP.

The Legislature passed the civil unions bill on Dec. 14 in response to a state Supreme Court order that same-sex couples be granted the same rights as married couples. The court in October gave lawmakers six months to act but left it to them to decide whether to call the unions "marriage" or something else.

The civil unions law grants gay couples adoption, inheritance, hospital visitation and medical decision-making rights and the right not to testify against a partner in state court.

According to the Associated Press, the same-sex wedding business is exploding like never before. Though it’s difficult to say exactly how much it’s worth, “some estimates place its value at up to $1 billion,” the Associated Press said.

The controversy over same-sex marriage seems to be the major fuel for this growth. “Vendors say attention to the marriage issue has encouraged more gay couples to recognize their relationships....” the AP says.

Rainbow Wedding Network, a same-sex wedding web site and expo company, told the AP that in 2005, $7.2 million was spent by customers on services advertised on their site. That figure is more than $5 million higher than the amount spent in 2002, the service quoted RWN co-owner Cindy Sproul as saying.

The news service spoke to one gay man named Phillip McKee who spent $60,000 on his wedding, which had a Scottish theme to it. He lives in Virginia where same-sex marriage is still illegal. "For us,” he told the AP, “the essence of a marriage is our love. Whether the state honors it is the icing on the cake — it's not the cake itself." The price tag for an average same-sex wedding is a little lower than what McKee spent on his wedding, ranging from $15,000, in places where same-sex marriage is illegal, to $20,000 in places where it is not, as Sproul told the AP.
