Eight Weeks - The ovum is about the size of a hen's egg; the developing embryo is slightly larger than the yolk. It has developed limbs and external genitalia. The cavity within the placenta is enlarging to accommodate fetal growth and already contains the amniotic fluid in which the fetus floats.

This is Futurliner #10. It was one of 12 built by GM for the Parade of Progress show in the 40s and 50s. Restoration, by a dedicated crew of volunteers, began in 1999. A display for the interior has been built by the volunteers but it is still hoped that GM will allow the American Crossroads display (the only original display remaining) to be restored and displayed in the Futurliner.

Most of us are aware of the sacrificial slaughter of Bear Sterns. Some people call it a bailout, but I call it a handout -- a government handout to some of the richest people on Earth, paid for by American taxpayers.

It's the survival of the richest, and the poorest be damned. There's something dismal about a society that operates by those values.

I understand why the Federal Reserve did what it did with Bear Stearns. The Fed was doing its job -- acting as the lender of last resort, pumping money into a dying system. It wanted to prevent a run on the bank and economic chaos. It was a very creative financing move, using the Fed's magic checkbook to pump more liquidity into a thirsty market -- sort of like a physician administering life-saving measures to a critically wounded patient.

clipper's remarks: The common myth is that the Desiderata poem was found in a Baltimore church in 1692 and is centuries old, of unknown origin. Desiderata was in fact written around 1920 (although some say as early as 1906), and certainly copyrighted in 1927, by lawyer Max Ehrmann (1872-1945) based in Terre Haute, Indiana. The Desiderata myth began after Reverend Frederick Kates reproduced the Desiderata poem in a collection of inspirational works for his congregation in 1959 on church notepaper, headed: 'The Old St Paul's Church, Baltimore, AD 1692' (the year the church was founded). Copies of the Desiderata page were circulated among friends, and the myth grew, accelerated particularly when a copy of the erroneously attributed Desiderata was found at the bedside of deceased Democratic politician Aidlai Stevenson in 1965.

Female dropouts more likely to return to school

A new study released by Statistics Canada has found that young women are less likely to quit high school than men -- and they're more likely to return to class if they do drop out.

Using data from a Labour Force Survey and a Youth in Transition survey, the study found that in 2004/2005 the percentage of young women returning to high school was dramatically higher than the percentage of men.

During the same period, 30 per cent of dropouts between the ages of 20 and 24 had returned to school. According to Statistics Canada, "the proportion for women was about 35 per cent, and for their male counterparts, about 26 per cent."

The reason women left school in the first place also had an impact on whether they were returning to school. Females who left school due to personal reasons such as pregnancy were 30 per cent more likely to go back to complete their studies than their cohorts.
