In days gone by, clansmen protected their land and their people, but reaching concensus on clans' historical accuracy is a challenge.

OUR UNDERSTANDING of a Highland clan is driven more by wishful thinking than by historical accuracy. If you are a "clansman" and share your surname with hundreds of thousands of people across the world, then the idea of you all being related in some distant way is extremely appealing.

There have been tribal groupings in Scotland, or Caledonia as it was then known, since records first started. Tacitus, the Roman historian, noted that these tribes had chiefs at the head and that the banded together to resist a common foe. But the idea of a clan functioning through its combined sense of "Kinship" is more of a medieval idea.

The word itself derives from the Gaelic clann, meaning children. In many ways this notion of a child, being protected within a paternal society is how clans are still regarded today.

Culloden home to spookiest car park

A CAR park at Edinburgh Airport has been chosen as the third-best in Britain, while one at Culloden Moor has been placed tenth - and also the most haunted.

Judges praised the airport car park for its security, generous parking-bay widths and lack of broken glass.

The survey for AA Insurance found the car park at the Culloden battlefield, near Inverness, to be the most haunted, because it is rumoured to be home to the ghosts of slaughtered soldiers. The survey said: "The car park is surrounded by grassy mounds with spooky views across the moors."

The St James car park in King's Lynn, Norfolk, was named as overall winner. It was described as "adorned with beautiful red brickwork".

The winners came from a sample chosen by Kevin Beresford, head of the Car Park Appreciation Society.

Touring the Battlefield

On 16 April 1746 the last battle to be fought on British soil took less than an hour to reach its bloody conclusion here on what is now know as Culloden Moor. It was not, as often portrayed, a battle between the Scots and the English: in reality the Scots on the Government side outnumbered those fighting for the Jacobites. Rather it was the last chapter in a sporadic civil war for succession to the throne that had been under way since 1688 (see our Historical Timeline).

1688 was the year in which King James VII of Scotland and II of England was deposed in favour of William of Orange by a Protestant nobility fearful he was starting a Catholic dynasty. Efforts to restore the Jacobites to the throne had subsequently led to conflict in 1689, 1708, 1715, and in 1719 when Spanish troops landed in Glen Shiel.
