Thought to have begun to diverge from other mammals 170m years ago, the platypus has been regarded as the nearest thing biologists have to a missing link between the earliest reptiles and mammals

Man-sized sea scorpion claw found

The 390-million-year-old specimen was found in a German quarry, the journal Biology Letters reports.

The creature, which has been named Jaekelopterus rhenaniae, would have paddled in a river or swamp.

The size of the beast suggests that spiders, insects, crabs and similar creatures were much larger in the past than previously thought, the team says.

The claw itself measures 46cm - indicating its owner would have been longer even than the average-sized human.

Overall, the estimated size of the animal exceeds the record for any other sea scorpion (eurypterid) find by nearly 50cm.

The Terrifying Toothpick Fish

The vast freshwater ecosystem of the Amazon River is home to abundant animal life, and many of its species thrive by virtue of their ferocity. If one were to ask the locals which of the river's indigenous species is the most treacherous, a few might describe the roaming packs of carnivorous piranhas, or the massive anaconda snakes; but based on the general sentiment of the region, the most frequently uttered response would be "candirú."

The candirú is a tiny catfish which dwells in the depths of the Amazon River. These fish do not hunt in packs like the piranha, nor are they exceptionally large like the anaconda. In fact, the candirú is among the tiniest vertebrates on the planet, and it is sometimes referred to as the "toothpick fish" due to its small size and slender shape. Only a handful of people have had the misfortune of crossing paths with the candirú, but their experiences serve as cautionary tales to any who venture into the mighty river.

Mystery hamster rolls up

A young boy out on his bike was shocked to see a hamster whiz past him on the street in an exercise ball.

Six-year-old Alexander Wallis- Banbury managed to catch up with the racey rodent and took him home.

His father Peter, 43, said: 'He came home delighted, shouting “Dad, I've found a hamster!”. I thought he'd more likely found a bit of fluff in the road or a ball of wool. So you can imagine how shocked I was to see a real hamster in its exercise ball.'

The family have since tried to trace the hamster's owner by putting up posters around their home in Wooburn Green, Buckinghamshire.

But nobody has come forward and they now believe the animal could have come from the next village 5km (three miles) away.

In the meantime, the hamster, which has been named Lucy, is making itself at home. The family plan to keep the pet if nobody claims it.

Killer Cambodian cow arrested and executed

A CAMBODIAN cow arrested by authorities last week after causing a string of traffic deaths has been butchered by its owner to prevent future highway carnage.

The animal had repeatedly escaped its enclosure and wandered into a nearby road.

Last week a motorcyclist hit it and was killed, local police chief Pin Doman said.

Earlier this year, the cow caused a collision between several vehicles on the same road on the outskirts of the capital Phnom Penh, killing five people and injuring several others, police said.

But following last week's wreck, the cow was seized and kept at the police station for more than a day before being given to the family of the dead motorist, Pin Doman said.

But relatives returned the cow to its owner without demanding compensation, saying the dead man's bad karma might have caused his fateful meeting with the wayward beast, he said.

Its owner, Kob Ry, promptly killed the cow on Sunday and sold the meat, the police chief said.

A bizarre breed of guinea pig that was created for laboratory testing more than 30 years ago has become the latest designer pet.

The skinny-pig has no hair on its body except for tufts on its face and feet - so needs strong suncream in the summer and a jumper in winter.

They eat three times the amount of a normal hairy pig and their dry skin requires moisturising. But animal lovers are willing to pay up to £150 for one.

Skinny Pigs were created using mutated genes during the Seventies and their bare skin was used for dermatological experiments.

Research labs eventually handed the creatures over to breeders who have mated them with traditional guinea pigs to strengthen their immune system.

They are now becoming a surprise hit, particularly with allergy sufferers.

Traditional breeders are sceptical about the craze, frowning on the breeding of a creature that need's Sun Protection Factor 50 in the summer and a custom-knitted jumper in the winter.

A top restaurant is serving up free grey squirrel pancakes to hungry diners.

Peking duck-style squirrel wraps are being offered to diners at The Famous Wild Boar Hotel.

The grey squirrels were caught in the hotel's 72-acre woodland grounds and have been prepared by head chef Marc Sanders.

Hotel general manager Andy Lemm said: "Although we do still have red squirrels, the greys are everywhere.

"Our diners seemed to enjoy the squirrel pancakes and I thought they tasted rather nice, a bit like rabbit."

Lord Redesdale's Red Squirrel Protection Partnership specialises in trapping and despatching greys to protect the reds.

The partnership has killed 4,521 greys since January, and Lord Redesdale said: "The problem is that when we catch and despatch greys, there is nothing we can do with them.

"We would like to be a supplier of grey squirrels. With an estimated five million greys in the country, there are enough of them to go round."

After grazing around a mostly dormant hot spring known as Soda Butte, bison amble single file to ford the Lamar River and join the herd on a recent sunny fall afternoon. Two young bull bison bringing up the rear jostle each other playfully with their massive black heads. Aspen trees are gilding, and a few fly fishermen wade into the river. A narrow road runs through this corner of Yellowstone National Park, and cars and vans have stopped all along it, depositing wildlife watchers gripping binoculars, spotting scopes and cameras. The tourists stand at the edge of the panorama like fence posts, surveying the free-roaming bison in the mountain valley perhaps hoping also to glimpse a grizzly bear — and maybe even the latest attraction in northeast Yellowstone, wolves.

'extinct' tiger seen in China

A rare South China tiger has been seen in the wild for the first time in decades, according to reports from China's official Xinhua news agency

The sighting, which came after a farmer handed in some pictures, surprised researchers who feared the tiger was extinct.

The tiger is critically endangered and was last sighted in the wild in 1964.

Experts have said that no more than 20 to 30 of the tigers were believed to remain in the wild, but none have been spotted in decades, with many fearing that a small number of captive-born tigers were all that remained.

The population of the South China tiger, the smallest tiger subspecies, was believed to number 4,000 in the early 1950s.

The animal has also fallen victim to the decimation of China's natural environment and the elimination of its natural prey.

Three other tiger subspecies, the Bali, Java, and Caspian tigers, have all become extinct since the 1940s, according to tiger experts.
